    About the program

Rio de Janeiro is a wonderful city with incredible views, but at the same time, thousands of residents and visitors and up affecting the health of marine environment. Even so, several sea turtles chose Rio de Janeiro to develop until adulthood (period that can last from 20 to 50 years). Staying long periods in potentially contaminated waters can directly influence the health of sea turtles. In that case, the objective of the project is to evaluate the density of sea turtles in different points of Rio de Janeiro and identify possible external diseases, such as tumors and visible skin problems (dermatitis).

Different methodologies, with the collaboration of Laboratório de Biometria e Conservação - BIOCO from the  Universidade Federal do Rio Grande - FURG, are proposed for evaluation of density and identification of pathologies, with the method of sighting by fixed point and by transaction, keeping researchers and volunteers out of the water for evaluations of sea turtles inside the water. Always accompanied by a dialogue with the local community in general who use these areas for free time and recreation for professionals who work daily in the region in addition to possible school groups.

In August, along with the sightings, a scientific expedition will take place to monitor the health os sea turtles in some locations of Rio de Janeiro. This expedition is being carried out in partnership with different institutions ans aims to assess the abundance and health of the turtles. Caminho Marinho is one of the organizations involved and is counting on the support of volunteers and researcher to work on the expedition.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about different research methodologies for sea turtles, as well as assist the researcj team in recording and estabilizing the captured turtles. The sightings of turtles in different locations are crucial for decigind where to aply the intentional capture during the expedition. For all these activities the volunteer wont need any special equipment or prior knowledge in sea turtles research. Our team will be together working all the time.

During the expedition the volunteers will start at 7:30 and go together with Coordinator to the place of work in that day. The volunteer will assist in the activities of organizing the material and accompanying the researchers, assisting in the biometry and registration procedures of the turtles recorded during intentional capture.
