    About the program

    Program

    The art and music project works to help children from marginalized communities in Jordan by using creative outlets to raise awareness of different social issues. Volunteers also help to promote a variety of important life skills such as creativity, confidence, communication, problem solving and teamwork.

    We partnered with local institutes that are interested in teaching arts and music and run creative workshops as a means of empowering the community to make positive changes in their way of life. Themes can include diversity, gender equality, the pursuit of dreams, deforestation, the impact of plastic on the world and climate change.


    Accommodation
    You’ll be hosted in a homestay where you’ll live with a local family. It is an exciting chance to learn the Jordanian way of life, meet local people, eat local food, speak the local language and engage in local customs and traditions. These families receive money from your program fee for support, food and board. This is an opportunity for you to directly see your fees having a positive impact in the community and going back into the local economy.Living is basic yet comfortable, and all homestays have electricity, WiFi and running water. participants can expect to share a room with other participants of the same gender, however in some homestays participants have their own rooms.

    Meals
    Participants are provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, with all meals served at your homestay. Breakfast and dinners tend to be smaller portions with mixed platters including falafel, dips, bread, eggs, fresh fruit and vegetables. Lunch is the bigger meal of the three, and can include a range of meats, breads, rice dishes, salads and vegetables.
    Bottled water is readily available in Jordan and participants should budget approximately $5 a week for two liters a day. If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know when you apply for the program so we can make arrangements for you. 

    Typical day

    You may have a morning or afternoon shift, or both, and can expect to work a minimum of 3 hours, Sunday through Thursday. A typical daily schedule would be as follows:


    8:00 AM Breakfast at the volunteer homestay.

    7:30 - 9:00 PM Dinner at the volunteer homestay. After dinner you will have the remainder of the evening free to relax and use as you wish.

    • The sacred mountain of Mount Nebo (on a clear day, visitors can see the Dead Sea, Bethlehem, and in the right conditions, even as far as Jerusalem.

    • The archaeological World Heritage Site in Jordan Al-Maghtas, officially known as Baptism Site "Bethany Beyond the Jordan", on the east bank of the Jordan River, considered to be the original location of the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist and venerated as such since at least the Byzantine period.
    • The only coastal city in Jordan is Aqaba on the Red Sea. The Red Sea is known for incredible diving and snorkeling. Just south of the city, the Aqaba Marine Park has 7 km of shoreline where visitors can explore the sea's coral reefs, fish and other marine life
    • The city of ruins of the walled Greco-Roman settlement of Gerasa Jersh in the North of Jordan
    • Originally built in 1184 to defend against the Crusaders, Ajloun Castle. Located in Ajloun town in the fertile highlands of north Jordan
    • Arguably one of Jordan's most spectacular sites, Umm Qais. Steeped in history, it provides an insight into the Roman Empire in Jordan and the Ottoman era and is known for its proximity to the ruins of the ancient Gadara. From Umm Qais you can also see the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus is said to have walked on water.
    • One of the absolute highlights of Jordan is hiking through the country’s dry and not-so-dry river beds, known as ‘wadi’. Dana Biosphere Reserve boasts some of the best hikes in Jordan, including more than one spectacular wadi trail.
    • Wadi Mujib, also known as Arnon Stream, is a river in Jordan. The river empties into the Dead Sea circa 420 meters below sea level. Today, Wadi Mujib is fed by seven tributaries. The western part of the river is the site of the Mujib Biosphere Reserve, popular for hikes & canyoning amid dramatic rock formations.

    In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

    Important things to note
    All programs attract a Registration Fee of US$150 in addition to the Program Fee. This covers all pre-departure support services.
    Additional things to budget for include: Visa, flights, travel insurance (mandatory), vaccinations, criminal background check, public transport to and from your placement each day and return to the airport when your program finishes.

    Recommended spending money: Volunteers in Jordan generally find US$50 to be sufficient for basic weekly expenses.

    Details on arrival

    The start date of the Programs is always on a Saturday. You would need to arrive in Amman on the Friday before your start date to be able to attend the Orientation. Orientation is taking place in Amman and runs for a full day. It covers everything you need to know for your program in Jordan – an introduction to Jordan, Jordanian customs, rules and expectations, safety, travel opportunities in Jordan, an introduction to your project and placement, an Arabic class and a walking tour through old Amman. The Orientation will also give you a chance to meet other participants and swap contact details for weekend travel and socializing. Your specific placement orientation will follow the general orientation, as you’ll be shown how to travel to and from your placement and be introduced to the team you’ll be joining.
