    About the program

Help feed, care for, and nourish the animals, as the program also calls for community engagement through educational forums and veterinary clinics in Darjeeling.

As a society, we often profess a love for animals, yet this affection can be conditional—too frequently tied to how useful they are to us. Many animals, especially strays, are denied the kindness and care they deserve.

    About the program

As a society, we often profess a love for animals, yet this affection can be conditional—too frequently tied to how useful they are to us. Many animals, especially strays, are denied the kindness and care they deserve.

    Program Highlights:

    • Help feed, groom, and care for rescued dogs and cats
    • Support mobile veterinary camps by assisting with vaccinations in both city and village settings
    • Engage in educational outreach, community awareness events, and public forums
    • Learn about pet adoption procedures and assist with interviews and assessments
    • Shadow veterinary professionals and assist with treatment and daily shelter operations
    • Take part in local cultural experiences like Kukur Tihar, a special day honouring dogs during the Dussehra festival

Founded in 1994, the Darjeeling Animal Shelter was established to combat the rabies epidemic among stray dogs. Since then, it has grown into a vital safe haven providing medical treatment, shelter, and affection for abandoned and stray animals throughout Darjeeling and nearby regions. Volunteers play an important role by helping with animal care, showing love and attention, and participating in vaccination drives and vet camps across both rural and urban communities.

Volunteering at the shelter can be a deeply fulfilling experience. Many participants come away with a new perspective on animal welfare, and some even overcome personal fears to build genuine empathy—particularly toward stray cats and dogs.

Through this program, you’ll gain firsthand insight into the day-to-day operations of an animal shelter. Your duties may include feeding, cleaning, grooming, and offering comfort to the animals. You’ll also get involved with broader community efforts through awareness campaigns, education sessions, and fieldwork in mobile clinics.

English is the primary language of communication within the shelter, especially with staff and veterinary teams. Outreach visits to nearby villages also provide opportunities for cultural exchange and immersion in local language and customs. Whether you’re already passionate about animals or simply curious, a compassionate mindset and openness to learning will enrich your experience.

The shelter also facilitates adoptions. Participants may observe or assist in the process—helping conduct interviews and understanding the legal and cultural context of adopting animals in India.

    Your Role:

    • Volunteer approximately five days per week, for around three hours per day
    • Adhere to the shelter’s routine and operational guidelines
    • Actively participate in animal care, vet camps, and outreach activities
    • Share ideas and assist in planning awareness or educational events
    Location:

Darjeeling is a hill station in the state of West Bengal in India. Set amongst steep and snowy mountains, the city of Darjeeling has been popular with locals as well as international travellers as a great holiday destination. Darjeeling also has much more to offer. The climate is cold here throughout the year. Tea plantations and picturesque monasteries add a unique value to the atmosphere in Darjeeling.

    Project Tasks:
    • Participating in vaccinations to reach more stray dogs
    • To assist in vet camps
    • Exchange ideas, technicalities, and knowledge
    • To help create more awareness about animal well-being
