    Your Role:

    As a volunteer in the HIV/AIDS program, you will be an integral part of the healthcare team, contributing to various essential tasks. Your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

    • Patient Education: Assisting in educating individuals coming to the center about HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment options, and safe practices.

    • Counseling Support: Providing emotional support and guidance to patients and their families, helping them navigate their healthcare journey.

    • Community Outreach: Participating in outreach programs to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention and available healthcare services.

    • Medication Management: Assisting with ARV management to help patients become empowered and able to understand and self manage their treatment

    • Observational Learning: Actively observing and learning from experienced healthcare professionals about various treatment strategies and patient care processes.

    • Preparing a Report: Compiling a concise report summarizing your experiences and key observations during your placement.

    Optional Outreach Opportunities

    You may choose to participate in additional outreach work, including:

    • Volunteering at a local community clinic on weekends.

    Your Stay in Arusha:

    You'll stay at one of our comfortable hostels, offering excellent meals and security. The accommodation is located in a quiet neighborhood, a short distance from the town center, and provides a supportive environment to connect with other volunteers. Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry services (for a small fee), and dedicated support staff are included.

    Transportation:

    You will experience local transportation, utilizing walking, public minibuses (budget approximately $1 per day, 4-5 days a week), or taxis (trusted drivers are available through Medi Trip).

    Essential Information:

    • Visa & Permit: A visa and work permit are required. Inquire for details and costs.

    • Hospital Practice Fee: A weekly contribution of up to $50 USD is payable to your host healthcare facility.

    • Airport Transfer: From Kilimanjaro (KIA) or Arusha (ARK) airports included

    Your typical day will usually begin very early, receiving a general and bedside handover of your patients. You will then be given supervised charge of a group of patients/patient list for the day and either observe or assist in managing the care and needs of those patients for the day.  You day can be either very hectic and extremely challenging or slow and very quiet. You will need to be motivated, resilient and work well in a team in order to get the best out of your experience. 

    What will your schedule look like?
    06:00 Breakfast
    07:30 Report to placement
    Between 15:00 and 17:00 Placement ends depending on how busy the day is with patients.

    The rest of the day will be yours to relax and enjoy what the town has to offer you!

    What else is there to do?

    There are endless possibilities. Most volunteers rave about climbing Kilimanjaro. This usually takes about a week, so ensure you organise this with us before you arrive. Take advantage of this amazing tourist treasure.

    Hot springs

    An oasis in the middle of a barren landscape. The hot springs are truly magnificent. This can be organised as a day trip at any time. 

    The Waterfalls

    Another hot favourite. Hiking across lush vegetation to the spectacular waterfalls.

    Safari

    Ah yes, what Tanzania is world famous for. Safari is once in a lifetime adventure that is unique to the Africa experience. Unforgettable and jaw dropping landscapes is what is promised. This will need you to sacrifice some days, so please ensure you organise this long in advance.

    Minimum Age: 18 years

    In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

    Language Skills

    You need to speak English (basic level)

    Education Requirements

    Social Work; Biochemistry; Sciences; Pharmacy; Nursing; Medicine at Minimum current student or graduated University, College or Diploma level

    Our volunteers stay in an award winning guesthouse Siret Hostel and one of the highest rated accommodations in Arusha. The fabulous, refurbished home is close to town, popular amongst tourists. Consistently rated above 9.2 and rated 4 stars.

    During orientation you will be shown tasty and affordable places to get lunch during your work day. You will have a good variety of local and western food places. There are amazing cafe's, bistro's and affordable western restaurants to enjoy a burger, salad, seafood etc!
