    About the program

Join Akuratatha in southern Sri Lanka and make a meaningful difference in the lives of twelve elderly women living in a peaceful and loving home. Many of these women no longer have family support, and your presence as a volunteer brings them joy, care, and a renewed sense of belonging.

As a volunteer, you will work closely with our local caregivers and Akuratatha team, who guide and support you throughout your stay. Together, you’ll spend quality time with the residents — talking, listening, sharing stories, and bringing warmth into their daily lives. You may organize or participate in creative and recreational activities such as music, arts, crafts, light gardening, and gentle exercises. Volunteers also help with simple household tasks and assist during special occasions like birthdays and local festivals, which are joyful moments of togetherness.

We expect our volunteers to be kind, patient, responsible, and culturally open-minded. No special professional skills or equipment are required — only a warm heart and a willingness to engage. Our local team will provide all necessary guidance, materials, and ongoing support during your placement.

Volunteers usually work 4–5 hours per day, five days a week, leaving plenty of time to relax, explore, and enjoy the beauty of southern Sri Lanka.

This program is perfect for volunteers aged 18 and above who wish to make a genuine difference in people’s lives while learning, growing, and becoming part of a warm and welcoming community.

Typical Day at the Elders’ Home Volunteer Program

Volunteering at Akuratatha’s Elders’ Home is a unique and rewarding experience, blending meaningful service with cultural exchange. Each day is designed to give you the opportunity to support the elderly women while also experiencing life in southern Sri Lanka.

    Morning
Your day usually begins with breakfast at the volunteer house, where you can enjoy traditional Sri Lankan dishes and share a relaxed meal with fellow volunteers. After breakfast, you will head to the Elders’ Home, a short walk or drive away. Volunteers typically start the morning by greeting the women and engaging in light conversation to understand their needs and preferences for the day.

The first part of the morning may include assisting with daily activities, such as helping the women walk safely, tidying living spaces, or supporting them during mealtime. Volunteers may also help organize small exercises or stretching sessions to promote physical health and mobility. This time is flexible, allowing volunteers to respond to the immediate needs of the women while building trust and companionship.

    Mid-Morning Activities
From mid-morning, volunteers engage in interactive activities designed to bring joy and mental stimulation. This can include:

    • Storytelling sessions, where volunteers and residents share personal stories, folklore, or cultural anecdotes.

    • Arts and crafts projects, such as painting, drawing, or simple handmade decorations.

    • Music or singing sessions, allowing the women to reminisce, dance lightly, or simply enjoy familiar songs.

Volunteers often help facilitate conversations and encourage participation from everyone, creating a lively and inclusive atmosphere. These activities are not only entertaining but also help maintain cognitive abilities and emotional well-being for the elderly residents.

    Lunch and Rest
Around noon, volunteers return to the volunteer house for a home-cooked Sri Lankan lunch, or sometimes lunch is shared at the Elders’ Home, providing another opportunity for interaction. After lunch, there is usually a short rest period or free time. This is a perfect moment to reflect on the morning, plan activities for the afternoon, or enjoy some quiet cultural immersion, such as reading, journaling, or practicing local language phrases.

    Afternoon
The afternoon focuses on more personalized attention and creative engagement. Volunteers may:

    • Assist individual women with hobbies or personal projects.

    • Organize light gardening or outdoor activities, such as planting flowers or tending to small vegetable patches.

    • Help the women with simple cooking activities, like making snacks or traditional sweets.

In addition to these activities, volunteers are encouraged to participate in special events or celebrations, including birthdays, local festivals, or small ceremonies. These events provide a wonderful opportunity to experience Sri Lankan traditions firsthand and contribute to the residents’ sense of community and joy.

Optional Engagement with Akuratatha’s Other Programs
Depending on your interest and availability, afternoons may also include optional volunteering at Akuratatha’s preschool or children’s home. This allows you to support broader community initiatives and interact with younger generations, creating a full-circle experience of giving and learning.

    Evening and Free Time
After activities conclude, volunteers return to the house to relax, have dinner, and enjoy free time. Evenings are perfect for cultural exchange, group discussions, or planning excursions to explore the beautiful southern region of Sri Lanka. Popular weekend activities include visiting beaches, local markets, temples, or tea plantations.

    Volunteer Support and Reflection
Throughout the day, Akuratatha staff provide guidance, support, and training to ensure volunteers feel confident and effective in their roles. Reflection is encouraged to help volunteers process their experiences, share learnings with peers, and understand the impact of their contributions on the lives of the women in the home.

    Summary
Every day at the Elders’ Home combines meaningful interaction, hands-on support, and cultural immersion. By the end of the day, volunteers leave knowing they have contributed to the well-being and happiness of the residents while gaining invaluable insights into Sri Lankan culture, hospitality, and human connection. The program is designed to be flexible, allowing volunteers to adapt their activities to the needs of the women while ensuring a rewarding and enriching experience for all.

To ensure continuity of care and meaningful relationships with the residents, a minimum stay of one month is required. This time allows volunteers to fully integrate into daily routines, develop trust with the elderly women, and actively contribute to ongoing activities. Longer stays of two or three months are warmly encouraged for those wishing to make a deeper impact and experience richer cultural immersion.
