Uganda, often referred to as the "Pearl of Africa," is a landlocked country in East Africa that shares borders with Kenya, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania. Situated on the equator, it boasts a varied and fertile landscape that includes Lake Victoria and the origin of the Nile River. With a population exceeding 49 million, the capital city is Kampala. Uganda is renowned for being home to more than half of the world's mountain gorillas, providing exceptional wildlife safaris, and showcasing a rich cultural diversity with over 50 different tribes.

In Uganda, women have a lower social status than men. This status means that women have less power to make decisions, get an education, obtain a profitable job, and/or be independent. Ugandan women do not have equal rights, particularly surrounding land ownership and marriage. Loans are rarely given to the poorer people in the community we are serving, and women are the majority, as they have no collateral, meaning that they struggle to find ways to escape the poverty trap. Micro-finance is a proven way of not creating millionaires, but increasing the standard of living for those who need the most help.
