    About the program

    Background to the Sports Program

Sport plays an important role in communities across Ghana, helping young people stay active while developing confidence, teamwork, discipline, leadership, and communication skills. It also creates a positive space where children can build friendships, learn valuable life skills, and enjoy healthy recreational activities.

Although this placement supports sports development more broadly, football is by far the most popular sport in Ghana and is the main focus of the program. Football is deeply rooted in local culture and provides an important social outlet for children from a wide range of backgrounds.

Due to limited resources and large numbers of participants, local coaches greatly benefit from extra support. As a sports volunteer in Ghana, you will work alongside local staff to help create a positive, inclusive, and encouraging environment where children can develop their sporting abilities, grow in confidence, and enjoy being part of a team.

The program goes beyond football skills alone. It also aims to support personal growth, build self-esteem, and promote healthy lifestyles. Volunteers play an important role in motivating children to learn, improve, stay active, and enjoy sport in a supportive team setting.

    Sports Volunteer Placement Examples

Local Schools & Community Fields – Volunteers may occasionally support a variety of recreational activities, but most sessions are focused on football coaching, training drills, and organised matches. Activities often help children develop core skills such as passing, dribbling, shooting, ball control, positioning, teamwork, and general fitness.

Sessions usually take place at local schools, community fields, and sports grounds, where children gather for regular training. Depending on the age and ability of the children, volunteers may assist with warm-ups, technical drills, small-sided games, fitness exercises, tactical activities, and match-day preparation.

Volunteers may also help organise equipment, demonstrate drills, encourage participation, and provide motivation throughout each session. Local coaches lead the overall program and provide direction, while volunteers bring extra energy, support, and fresh ideas.

Other sports and recreational activities may sometimes be included to encourage physical activity and engagement, but football remains the primary focus of the placement.

Other Things to Consider as a Sports Volunteer in Ghana

Project Flexibility – This project may offer the flexibility to combine more than one placement. When applying, select your preferred start date and the duration of your first project. If you would like to add extra weeks, include this in your application along with the project you would like to extend onto.

Cultural Differences – Volunteers should approach this program with an open mind and be prepared to adapt to cultural differences. Practices around children’s rights and discipline in Ghana may differ significantly from what volunteers are used to in their home countries.

While mistreatment is never condoned, physical discipline can be more common in Ghana and may feel surprising or unsettling to some volunteers. It is important to remain respectful, open-minded, and guided by the local team’s advice. These topics will be covered during orientation so volunteers feel prepared. If you witness anything concerning, speak with the local team so they can address the situation or provide clarity.

Resources – Sports equipment and facilities may be limited. Volunteers are encouraged to be creative, flexible, and adaptable when planning activities and working with the resources available on site.

Impact – Your role is to support and strengthen existing programs led by local coaches. While your contribution can benefit the children and improve the flow of sessions, the focus is on assisting local staff in a way that supports long-term sustainability and positive community impact.

Football Focus – This placement is mainly focused on football coaching and development. Volunteers may occasionally assist with other recreational games or physical activities, but most sessions involve football training, skill development, practice matches, and youth coaching.

Volunteers joining this program should have an interest in football and be comfortable taking part in football-based activities throughout most of their placement. Previous playing or coaching experience can be helpful, but it is not required. Enthusiasm, energy, patience, and a willingness to engage with the children are the most important qualities.

    Typical day

Your Volunteer Role & Typical Work Day

As a sports volunteer in Ghana, much of your time will be spent supporting football training sessions in schools and community settings. Working alongside local coaches, you will help organise drills, encourage participation, manage training groups, and support players as they build confidence, improve technical skills, and develop a stronger understanding of the game.

Volunteers are encouraged to take an active role during sessions and build positive relationships with the children and local team. Those with previous football playing or coaching experience are welcome to share ideas and contribute to training activities where suitable. However, formal coaching qualifications are not required. Enthusiasm, energy, patience, and a willingness to engage with children are far more important.

A typical day may include setting up equipment, assisting with structured training activities, supporting practice matches, and encouraging players throughout each session. Volunteers may also have the chance to help with local tournaments, friendly matches, football festivals, and wider community sports initiatives during their placement.

Volunteers usually take part in sessions Monday to Friday for around 3 to 5 hours per day. The schedule often takes place in the morning or early afternoon, depending on the school or community timetable.

Through your involvement, you will help create enjoyable and meaningful sporting experiences for young people, while gaining valuable insight into community sport and youth development in Ghana.

Airport Pickup at Kotoka International Airport

You should arrive into Kotoka International Airport in Accra (airport code ACC) on the Sunday start date. Airport pickup is available 24 hours on your arrival day.

On arrival, a member of the local team or an appointed driver will be waiting for you at the airport holding a sign with your name. They will take you straight to the volunteer accommodation, where you can relax and settle in. The accommodation is around 35 minutes away from the airport.

    Accommodation

Volunteers in Ghana stay in a shared volunteer house located in a friendly neighbourhood, around 45 minutes from Accra city centre. The local area has restaurants, convenience stores, ATMs, and a small shop close to the accommodation.

The house is basic but comfortable, with bunk beds in same-sex shared rooms for up to 6 people. Rooms are air-conditioned, and each volunteer is provided with bed linen and a mosquito net. Bathrooms are shared and include western-style toilets and cold-water showers, which are refreshing in Ghana’s warm climate.

Volunteers are provided with a locker for storing small valuables and important items. The house also has a lounge, TV, outdoor seating area, refrigerator, and Wi-Fi, although the connection can be intermittent.

The accommodation is gated and secure, with an on-site local coordinator available for support. Volunteers should be prepared for occasional power cuts or water shortages, as these can happen in Ghana, so flexibility and adaptability are important.

    Food & Beverages

Volunteers in Ghana receive three meals per day. Breakfast and dinner are served at the accommodation, while lunch is usually provided as a packed meal to take with you during the day. Filtered drinking water is also available at the accommodation.

Meals are typically local and filling, with plenty of rice, noodles, yams, fufu, soup, stew, eggs, chicken, fish, and other simple dishes. Breakfast may include bread, cereal, spreads, pancakes, milk, tea, and coffee.

Ghanaian food can be quite different from what volunteers are used to, and meals are often carbohydrate-based. Fresh dairy products can be limited, and meat options may vary, with chicken, fish, and goat being more common than pork, lamb, or beef.

Dietary requirements will be catered for where possible, but this cannot always be guaranteed. Volunteers with specific dietary needs may need to buy some extra ingredients locally. There are also some Western, Chinese, and Indian restaurants around 45 minutes away by car for those wanting additional options.
