This programme is designed for international volunteers who wish to make a difference in vulnerable communities in Costa Rica. We collaborate with various clinics and health centers in San Ramón, Palmares, and Naranjo, in the Alajuela Province. Our mission is to provide sanitary, physical, and emotional support, improving access to health and well-being services for those facing economic and social barriers.
Locations and Surroundings
Volunteers will be immersed in the authentic culture of the Alajuela Province, specifically in the towns of San Ramón, Palmares, and Naranjo. Known as the "City of Poets," San Ramón and its neighboring towns are situated in the central highlands, surrounded by breathtaking mountains and coffee plantations. Unlike the coastal tourist hubs, this region offers a genuine look into Costa Rican daily life. Volunteers will typically stay with local host families, providing a safe and welcoming environment. This arrangement allows for deep cultural immersion, the opportunity to practice Spanish, and the chance to experience the true "Pura Vida" lifestyle. The clinics are generally accessible via public transportation or short walks from the homestays.
Collaboration and Teamwork
In this role, you will not be working alone. You will work side-by-side with local professionals, including doctors, nurses, physical therapists, and administrative staff who are dedicated to serving their community. This collaboration offers a unique opportunity for professional exchange and insight into the Costa Rican healthcare system. You will interact with a diverse patient demographic, ranging from children and expectant mothers to the elderly, many of whom rely on these centers for their primary care.
Volunteer Activities
Volunteers are involved in a variety of tasks, from assisting medical staff in consultations and emergencies to providing support in physical therapy and rehabilitation. They also organize prevention workshops and participate in home visits to bring care to patients with limited mobility. Although volunteers do not perform surgeries or diagnose independently, their role is crucial for the efficient functioning of the clinics and in improving community well-being.
Expectations and Equipment
What we expect: We look for proactive, empathetic individuals who are eager to learn and adapt to a new cultural context. A basic to intermediate level of Spanish is highly recommended to communicate effectively with staff and patients. We expect punctuality, professionalism, and a respectful attitude toward local customs.
What you can expect from us: We provide 24/7 in-country support, a comprehensive orientation upon arrival, and coordination with the host families and clinics to ensure your safety and integration.
Equipment: Volunteers are asked to bring their own medical scrubs (or a white coat) and comfortable closed-toe shoes suitable for a clinical setting. If you are a medical student or professional, bringing your own stethoscope is recommended, though the clinics provide the essential medical supplies for daily operations.
