    About the program

Families walk long distances, clinics are overwhelmed, and vulnerable individuals often go without the medical attention they urgently need.

This is where you come in. By joining our Medical & Clinical Volunteer Program, you become part of a compassionate movement delivering hope, healing, and dignity to underserved communities in Kampala.

We warmly invite passionate and dedicated individuals from all medical and healthcare backgrounds, including:

    • Medical Students & Pre-Health Students

    • Doctors & Medical Consultants

    • Clinical Officers

    • Nurses & Midwives

    • Pharmacists & Pharmacy Technicians

    • Laboratory Technicians

    • ECG Technicians

    • Specialists (Gynecologists, ENT Specialists, Dermatologists, and more)

Whether you are experienced or still in training, your skills and willingness to serve can save lives and transform communities.

As a Medical & Clinical Volunteer Assistant, you will work alongside local healthcare professionals to:

    • Support patient consultations and basic clinical procedures

    • Assist in triage, patient care, and medical record-keeping

    • Participate in community outreach and health education programs

    • Support maternal health, child health, and preventive care initiatives

    • Help improve healthcare access in low-resource settings

    • Group Medical Trips -

We offer cost-effective group journeys for educational institutions and organizations globally. Starting at just 950 Euros per person (with group leaders coming at no cost), our comprehensive 15-day itinerary is meticulously planned, all-inclusive, and guided by our skilled team. Organizing international trips for sizable groups requires extensive preparation. We truly excel in the realm of group overseas expeditions, delivering unique group travel experiences while catering to large student groups with full board arrangements. We assure you of providing reliable and thoroughly vetted medical project environments that offer valuable insights, exposure, and educational experiences for students.

    • Community Visits
Volunteers will join Community Health Promoters (CHPs) in performing various health checks throughout different community environments. For instance, they may visit local schools to carry out health screenings for students. Volunteers often have the opportunity to provide basic first aid to the children. Furthermore, visits to care homes within the community are carried out to perform health screenings on the more vulnerable and elderly individuals. In this context, volunteers can offer their assistance by helping with cooking and meal preparation for the residents. The primary goal of the local team is to support the underprivileged community to the best of their ability.
    • Shadowing in a Hospital Environment
Our network includes various clinics. Volunteers will have the chance to shadow in different clinic departments. Here, they may perform basic health assessments on patients during the doctor's rounds. Common departments where volunteers in Kenya will be assigned include the Clinic, ultrasound, pediatrics, Pharmacy, Dental, ophthalmology, gynecology, laboratory, and non-urgent care. You may also have the opportunity to observe surgeries. However, this occurs on an ad hoc basis. You will be informed a day in advance or even on the same day once the surgeries are confirmed. Naturally, we cannot assure that specific surgeries will occur. Regardless, it can be a truly enlightening experience to witness the differences between clinics in Uganda and those in your home country.
    • Professionals can take on roles such as assistant doctors, nurses, dentists, physical therapists, or midwives, or perform basic procedures at our clinic. This includes patient consultations, diagnostic tests, surgeries, treatment plans, and routine checkups like measuring blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, and weight. You will help with dressing and suturing wounds. You will work in relevant departments (e.g., gynecology, obstetrics, pediatrics) to support patient care and staff. Assist in hospital laboratories or counseling units, which may involve organizing data or helping with testing procedures. You will aid in the organization and distribution of medications and help patients navigate from one service point to another within a hospital or clinic.

Every small action you take contributes to a larger impact on human lives.

    Wildlife

The wildlife of Uganda is composed of its flora and fauna. Uganda has a wide variety of different habitats, including mountains, hills, tropical rainforest, woodland, freshwater lakes, swamps and savanna with scattered clumps of trees. The country has a biodiverse flora and fauna reflecting this range of habitats and is known for its primates, including gorillas and chimpanzees. There are ten national parks and thirteen wildlife reserves; some 345 species of mammal and 1020 species of bird have been recorded in the country.

    Preparation for Arrival

Engaging in volunteer work in Uganda through UCESCO Africa promises to be an exciting and transformative experience. You will have the opportunity to connect with new friendships and confront various challenges, all while immersing yourself in a different culture. To fully benefit from this experience, it is advisable to ensure that you are adequately prepared, both physically and mentally.

Kampala (Uganda’s capital city) has a very active but informal transport system, meaning it is fast, cheap, and flexible—but it requires knowing the safest options.

Here is a clear, practical guide for transportation, accessibility, taxes (fares), and safety:

🚖 1. Main Modes of Transport in Kampala

    🏍️ Boda Bodas (Motorcycle taxis)

    1. The fastest way to move through heavy traffic

    1. Available everywhere, even in narrow roads

    2. Best for short distances (1–5 km)

Cost: ~0.27– 1.36 USD per trip depending on distance

✔ Best option: SafeBoda app / Uber Boda / Bolt Moto (safer, tracked, fixed fares)

    🚐 Matatus (Shared minibus taxis)

    1. The cheapest public transport

    1. Runs on fixed routes but no strict schedule

    2. Departs when full

    3. Can be crowded but very common

    Cost: ~0.14–0.82 USD per ride

✔ Best for: Budget travel and longer city routes
⚠ Watch out for pickpockets in crowded areas

🚗 Special Hire Taxis / Ride Apps

    1. Private cars you hire for personal trips

    1. Includes Uber, Bolt, Faras, Safe Car

    2. More comfortable and safer than matatus

Cost: ~2.72–27.17 USD depending on distance

✔ Best for: Airport transfers, night travel, business travel

    🚌 Buses (City & intercity)

    • Larger and more structured than matatus

    • More predictable routes but less frequent

    • Good for long-distance or main routes

    🛣️ 2. Accessibility in Kampala

    • Matatus have high steps and narrow doors

    • Boda bodas are not accessible for mobility needs

    • ✔ Best accessible option: private car / ride-hailing apps

👉 Kampala is improving, but it is still not fully disability-friendly in public transport.

💰 3. “Taxes” / Transport Fares (Important Clarification)

In Kampala, “taxi” usually means minibus (matatu) or special hire car, not government tax.

    Typical fares:

    • Boda boda: 2.72–1.36 USD

    • Matatu: 0.14–0.82 USD

    • Special hire (Uber/Bolt): 2.72+ USD depending on distance

💡 Fares are often negotiated or dynamic, especially for boda bodas and special hires.

🔐 4. Safest Ways to Move Around Kampala🥇 Safest overall options

    • Uber / Bolt / Faras / Safe Car (car rides)

    • SafeBoda / Uber Boda (motorbikes with tracking)

    🥈 Moderate safety

    • Matatus (daytime only, avoid rush confusion)

🧭 5. Best Travel Strategy (Recommended)

    For visitors or volunteers:

✔ Daytime → SafeBoda or Uber
✔ Long distances / luggage → Uber or Bolt car
✔ Budget travel → Matatus (with locals guiding you)
    ✔ Night travel → ONLY ride-hailing cars

    🌍 6. Simple Summary

    Kampala is:

    • 🚀 Fast-moving but traffic-heavy

    • 💸 Very affordable transport system

    • 🏍️ Dominated by boda bodas

    • 🚗 Increasingly digital with Uber/Bolt apps
