As you prepare to embark on your volunteer journey in Kampala, Uganda, we kindly encourage you to review the following essential information to ensure a smooth, safe, and fulfilling experience.
1. Currency, Mobile Communication & Internet AccessUpon arrival, maintaining communication with your family, fellow volunteers, and our local team is essential for your comfort and safety.
Mobile Communication
We strongly recommend bringing an unlocked mobile phone. Purchasing a local SIM card in Kampala is both affordable and convenient, offering significantly lower rates for local and international communication compared to international roaming services.
SIM cards are widely available across the city and typically cost approximately USD 1. Our team or fellow volunteers will gladly assist you in locating a trusted vendor upon arrival. Please ensure your device is compatible with international SIM cards prior to travel.
Currency & Payments
The official currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX). Currency exchange services are available at major shopping malls, and ATMs are accessible throughout Kampala. While local transactions are conducted in UGX, US Dollars are accepted for certain services such as national park entrance fees.
Internet Access
Volunteers can stay connected through:
Wi-Fi available at homestays, cafés, and selected public areas
Mobile data bundles via local SIM cards
Portable modem devices (USB sticks) for personal use
Online communication platforms such as email, social media, and video calling services provide cost-effective ways to stay in touch. Many volunteers also choose to document their journey through blogs or updates for sponsors.
2. Packing EssentialsTo ensure a comfortable and well-prepared stay, please bring the following:

eTA Visa (apply via: https://www.immigration.go.ug)
Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity from date of entry)
Yellow Fever vaccination certificate (mandatory for entry)
Credit/debit card and/or cash
Power adapter compatible with Ugandan outlets

Comfortable travel pillow
Wet wipes and hand sanitizer
Durable footwear suitable for outdoor activities
Small day bag or waist pouch

3. Your First Day with UCESCO Africa – UgandaUpon arrival at the airport, a member of the UCESCO Africa team will warmly welcome you. Communication will be coordinated via WhatsApp for convenience.
Your official orientation will take place on the first weekday at our Kampala office. During this session:
You will be introduced to the organization, its mission, and ongoing programs
You will meet the volunteer coordinator and team members
You will have the opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance
A visit to selected project sites may be arranged
The orientation typically concludes around 2:00 PM, after which you may visit nearby shopping centers to:
