Human Rights internships are typically hosted by community organisations, NGOs, and government agencies. Interns collaborate with social workers and change agents committed to empowerment and social justice. Responsibilities often include community outreach, education, research, and fundraising. This immersive experience provides firsthand insight into how culture, social values, and the dynamics of politics, religion, gender, and ethnicity shape communities.
Placements are tailored to align with your goals and interests, ensuring a mutually beneficial experience. Tasks assigned may vary based on the organization’s current projects. While in-country coordinators are available for support, interns should be prepared to work independently and demonstrate leadership.
Spanish Language Requirement:
Local organisations primarily operate in Spanish. An intermediate level of Spanish is required, and a phone interview will assess your proficiency before you join the program.
Schedule:
- Work: 4–6 hours/day, Monday to Friday
- Spanish Lessons: 1-hour daily classes, Monday to Friday
- Weekends: Free for relaxation, exploration, or personal tasks
Appearance Guidelines:
Professionalism is key in Peru. Interns should wear business casual attire, covering shoulders and knees, and avoid revealing or extravagant clothing.
Transportation:
Internship placements are located in Cusco. Most interns travel via affordable local buses (approx. $1.75 one way) or taxis. The travel time ranges from 10–60 minutes each way. On your first day, a representative will guide you through local transport.
Deliverables:
Interns must submit weekly journals and a final deliverable.
- Practicums (<8 weeks): A 10–20-page paper or a 1-hour PowerPoint presentation
- Internships (8+ weeks): Both a paper and a presentation
The deliverables should include:

- Organization review
- Analysis of the sector in the host or home country
- Challenges encountered
- Results and outcomes achieved

Location
Cusco, Peru – easily one of the top 5 ancient civilization centers in the world, is also home to immense scenic beauty, bio-diversity and incredible culture. On this project, you’ll be situated in the outer regions of Cuzco, approx 15 min bus ride to central Cuzco where the volunteer center is located.
