Underwater filmmaking plays a crucial role in global conservation: most people will never see the ecosystems that urgently need protection, and visual storytelling bridges that gap. Yet filming underwater requires specialized techniques—managing buoyancy while filming, lighting in low visibility, understanding marine behavior, and designing narratives that accurately represent ecological realities. Without training, even skilled filmmakers struggle to capture usable or ethical footage. This program exists to fill that gap by teaching participants how to build compelling conservation-focused content that supports scientific communication, environmental education, and outreach campaigns.
Participants spend most days diving, filming, and working alongside our conservation team to document coral nurseries, reef restoration sites, biodiversity surveys, and community-led initiatives. You’ll learn shot planning, underwater camera operation, macro and wide-angle techniques, color correction strategies, natural-light filming, and safe practices for shooting around sensitive habitats and wildlife. Beyond raw footage, you will also practice topside filming for interviews and structured production planning to build a cohesive story.
On land, training sessions cover visual storytelling structure, environmental communication, ethical media guidelines, editing workflows, and the technical foundation of underwater cinematography. Participants learn to use industry-standard editing software and follow professional post-production techniques, including color grading, audio design, and creating narrative sequences. You will analyze your footage, receive personalized feedback, and refine your project from concept to final cut.
Each participant completes a signature project tailored to their interests—such as a short conservation film, a social-media campaign series, a restoration site documentary, or scientific visual assets for our research and outreach. These final pieces support real marine education efforts and serve as portfolio-quality work for future opportunities in filmmaking, media, or conservation.
Participants work closely with our conservation scientists, dive professionals, and experienced underwater filmmakers who provide full supervision and mentorship throughout the program. All required filming gear can be provided upon request, though participants are encouraged to bring personal equipment if preferred. A laptop with editing software is highly recommended for post-production work.
