Your Role:
- As a Laboratory Assistant, you will be an integral part of the hospital's laboratory team, contributing to various essential tasks. Your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Specimen Processing: Assisting with the collection, labeling, and processing of patient specimens (blood, urine, tissue samples, etc.) following established protocols. This might involve centrifugation, aliquoting, and preparing samples for analysis.
- Laboratory Testing: Performing basic laboratory tests under the supervision of experienced laboratory technicians or medical professionals. This could include hematology tests, urinalysis, or other routine procedures.
- Equipment Maintenance: Assisting with the maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment, ensuring its proper functioning and hygiene. This might involve sterilization and routine checks on instruments.
- Quality Control: Supporting quality control measures by maintaining accurate records, organizing supplies, and adhering to safety regulations.
- Data Entry and Record Keeping: Entering and maintaining accurate laboratory data and patient records, following strict confidentiality protocols.
- Inventory Management: Assisting with stock management of laboratory supplies and reagents, ensuring adequate supplies are available for testing.
- Observational Learning: Actively observing and learning from experienced laboratory professionals about various laboratory techniques, diagnostic procedures, and disease processes.
- Preparing a Report: Compiling a concise report summarizing your experiences and key observations during your placement.

Your Stay in Arusha:
You'll stay at one of our 4 Siret Hostels offering comfortable accommodations, excellent meals, and security. The hostel is located in a quiet neighborhood, a short distance from the town center, and provides a supportive environment to connect with other volunteers. Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry services (for a small fee), and dedicated support staff are included.
Transportation:
You will experience local transportation, utilizing walking, public minibuses (budget approximately $1 per day, 4-5 days a week), or taxis (trusted drivers are available through Medi Trip).
Essential Information:
- Visa & Permit: A visa and work permit are required. Inquire for details and costs.
- Hospital Practice Fee: A weekly contribution of up to $50 USD is payable to your host hospital (Ministry of Health, Tanzania).
- Airport Transfer: (Kilimanjaro (KIA) or Arusha (ARK) airports, or Arusha Bus Station).
