    About the program

UCESCO Africa is seeking yoga instructor volunteers interested in volunteering in Maralal, Samburu Village, Kenya. The goal is to teach Kids, women, and high school students, as well as those in vocational colleges, helping them feel a sense of connection to their community and creating a safe environment for them to rebuild their lives. This initiative is designed to enhance their self-esteem by acknowledging their current skills and abilities while also supporting them in developing new ones.

These initiatives provide a wide range of physical and emotional benefits, such as
    1. Enhancing muscle and bone strength
    2. Boosting concentration and academic success
    3. Improving mood
    4. Reducing the risk of various lifestyle-related diseases.
    5. Reducing the risk of various lifestyle-related diseases.
    About the Program
As an instructor, you can select a central theme for these discussions, focusing on daily habits that enhance health, such as adequate sleep, hydration, and nutritious eating. Additionally, topics can include fostering positivity through gratitude, good citizenship, and peacemaking. This approach will help cultivate a positive mindset among participants, making them more receptive to the calming nature of yoga. Allocating 5–10 minutes during the day for self-directed relaxation is also recommended. During this time, participants can participate in quiet mindfulness activities like journaling, coloring, or listening to guided meditation stories. Following these reflective practices, students will be better prepared to engage in yoga with a positive attitude. It is advisable to incorporate these activities at the start of the day or after recess, ensuring students feel refreshed and ready for meaningful reflection. Once these activities are completed, you can seamlessly introduce yoga poses and exercises to maintain a consistent practice.

    We expect that:
    1. You are enthusiastic about making a contribution
    2. You have a strong desire to teach those who are new to yoga
    3. Your calm and accepting nature allows you to engage with women, youth, and children from various backgrounds without judgment.
    4. You are committed to positively influencing your target audience or individual.
Other ways you Can Help as a volunteer

Volunteers play an important role in supporting these communities. You can contribute in the following ways as one way of motivating the communities through online fundraising:

    1. Giving Donations.

     Priority needs include:
    1. Yoga mats are needed for the students, as many do not possess one.
    2. Comfortable clothing for yoga is essential, ideally breathable and flexible attire that facilitates movement (such as leggings, shorts, and loose tops). If you can gather these from friends, it would be wonderful, since many students cannot afford them. You might also consider reaching out to a company that wishes to promote itself with its logo.
    3. Water bottles are necessary.
    4. Yoga blocks are beneficial for assisting with alignment and providing support in poses, particularly for beginners.
    5. A yoga strap (or belt) is useful for helping students achieve deeper and proper alignment.
    6. A yoga towel is important for absorbing sweat and preventing slipping on the mat.
    7. A yoga blanket or bolster can provide cushioning under the knees and hips, offer extra support in restorative poses, or provide warmth during relaxation.
    8. An eye pillow can help soothe the eyes during the final relaxation phase (Savasana).
    9. Additional yoga training equipment is also needed ( eg, Music System, etc.)

As you get ready to embark on your volunteer journey in Kenya, we kindly ask you to familiarize yourself with the following essential guidelines.

    1. Kenyan Currency, Mobile Phones, and Internet Access

    • Having a mobile phone will enable you to stay in touch with your family and friends. Local SIM cards are available, with Safaricom being the predominant provider. A SIM card can be purchased for approximately 1 US Dollar, offering competitive rates. The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling, and you can exchange money at malls or withdraw cash from ATMs. U.S. dollars are accepted for entrance fees at National Parks.
    • Acquiring a local SIM card enables you to access M-Pesa, a popular and user-friendly mobile payment platform in Kenya. This facilitates seamless transactions, whether in markets, for transport fares, or even in remote villages across Kenya, eliminating the need to carry cash. This is particularly beneficial as taxi drivers often claim they lack change and may retain excess amounts. With M-Pesa, you can pay the exact fare required, unless you choose to provide a tip. Additionally, you can top up your M-Pesa account using services such as Wise.
    • Internet access is available via Wi-Fi in accommodations, workplaces, and public areas such as cafes and shopping centers. Alternatively, modem sticks for laptops can be purchased for additional connectivity options.
    2. Packing Essentials (Required items):
    • eTA-Visa, which can be obtained via this link (https://www.etakenya.go.ke/de/evisa)
    • Passport (ensure it is valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry),
    • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate,
    • credit card and/or cash,
    • power adapter for local outlets.
    • Recommended items: personal toiletries, travel pillow, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, durable footwear or shoes suitable for outdoor use, fanny pack, compact power bank, hairdryer, and clothing suitable for the weather (check the forecast before your arrival, as conditions may vary from your departure location). Laundry services are available for an additional fee.
    3. Meals and Accommodation
    •  We offer a consistent weekly menu; however, if you would like an alternative meal, you are encouraged to make your arrangements and utilize the kitchen appliances available in the apartment to prepare your meals.
    • In Samburu village, volunteers live in a comfortable volunteer house, enjoying freshly prepared meals (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner) and a vibrant community atmosphere. Furthermore, we also prepare meals at the school, and you are welcome to join the children for these meals during lunchtime if you wish. In addition to the accommodation we offer our volunteers, there is the option to stay at Maralal Safari Lodge. Located within the Maralal Game Sanctuary, this lodge offers a peaceful and picturesque setting ideal for relaxation. Volunteers can take in stunning views of wildlife, such as zebras, impalas, giraffes, and buffalo, as they wander freely nearby, accompanied by the soothing sounds of nature at night. The bed and breakfast rate is approximately 90 USD per person per day, in addition to the project fee.

You have the choice to stay at our accommodations or select Maralal Safari Lodge. While our facilities are of excellent quality, you may miss out on the wildlife experience. We ensure that meals are thoughtfully prepared to cater to our volunteers' needs. You will have numerous opportunities to immerse yourself in village life, including home visits, and we can organize bonfires until around 9 PM to enjoy the African night, with its beautiful stars and moon, along with fresh breezes. If you wish to explore the city, you are free to leave the project site earlier. Official volunteer hours are from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with the remainder of your time at your discretion.
    4. What can you expect on your first day with UCESCO Africa
    • There are no direct flights from your country to Samburu village; instead, you will first fly to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, landing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Your journey to Samburu village will commence in Nairobi, where you will stay for one or two nights at our accommodation for orientation and planning. From Nairobi, you can make your way to Samburu by road, accompanied by one of our staff members. Some volunteers opt for public transportation, while others prefer a private vehicle. The journey to Samburu takes approximately five hours and includes three stops: the first at the Rift Valley viewpoint/Equator view, which marks the division between the northern and southern hemispheres; the second at Thomson Falls for lunch, where you can enjoy the refreshing mist from the water falls and access to clean washrooms; and the third stop for potential wildlife sightings, as it is common to see giraffes, zebras, and elephants along the way. For those visiting Thomson Falls, the entrance fee is 5 USD. Lunch options are available, with prices ranging from 10 USD to 20 USD. The other stops are free of charge, allowing you to immerse yourself in nature and appreciate the breathtaking landscapes and wildlife along the route. If you encounter a particularly stunning view, the driver is always happy to stop for a memorable photo opportunity

You will then be transported to your accommodation in Nairobi in one of our private vehicles. Following your stay, you will either head to Samburu the next day or, after two days of rest in Nairobi, which will include an orientation and various projects in the area. Once you confirm your booking and secure your volunteer position with us, we will provide you with our Whatsup number for seamless communication, particularly during your airport pick-up, as the airport has reliable Wi-Fi.

    N/B
There can occasionally be delays with luggage. We have observed that some volunteers have experienced significant waits for their bags, sometimes up to three days. To prepare for such situations, we recommend that you pack essential items and a few clothes to change for 2 - 3 days in your carry-on bag. While luggage delays are not common, they can occur, and we want to help you avoid any unnecessary expenses, such as having to purchase clothing while waiting for your luggage.

    Accommodation

    Accommodation and Meals

Our accommodations are equipped with running treated water; however, it is recommended that volunteers avoid drinking tap water and instead choose bottled water. The accommodation consists of spacious, beautifully finished houses that are fully furnished, featuring en-suite rooms and bathrooms. These residences provide a comfortable and inviting atmosphere, ensuring a memorable stay that encourages guests to return. We ensure that meals are well-prepared and tailored to meet the needs of our volunteers.

Parking is available, and the premises are monitored by security personnel 24/7. It is located in a tranquil environment with friendly locals, making it perfect for volunteers to unwind after a day of hard work. Weekly housekeeping services, including bedding changes, are offered every Saturday.

In addition to our accommodation, volunteers may also consider staying at Maralal Safari Lodge. Nestled within the Maralal Game Sanctuary, this lodge offers a peaceful and picturesque setting ideal for relaxation. Volunteers can enjoy stunning views of wildlife, including zebras, impalas, giraffes, and buffalo, as they roam freely nearby, accompanied by the soothing sounds of nature at night. The bed and breakfast rate is approximately 90 USD per person per day, in addition to the project fee. You have the option to stay at our accommodations or choose Maralal Safari Lodge. While our facilities are of high quality, you may miss out on the wildlife experience, though you will have ample opportunities to engage with village life, including home visits, and we can arrange bonfires until around 9 PM  as you watch beautiful stars and moon at night with beautiful story teeling from clan Elders about our cultures until it’s time to rest. If you wish to explore the city, you are free to leave the project site earlier. Official volunteer hours are from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with the remainder of your time at your discretion.

    Food & Beverages

We provide Breakfast and Dinner meals daily. You may need to purchase snacks or affordable meals nearby for your lunch while at the project site. Occasionally, you might share lunch with students, but be cautious, as githeri (a mix of cooked maize and beans) may be challenging to digest if you are not accustomed to it. If you have specific dietary needs, such as vegetarian or vegan preferences, please inform us so we can accommodate you. We will strive to ensure your comfort, but as a volunteer, flexibility is essential for easy adaptation.

    Details on arrival

    Preparation for Arrival

This program is throughout the year; you can arrive at any time and period of the year. We also accept long-term volunteers for periods of one year or more. Engaging in volunteer work in Kenya through our organization promises to be an exciting and transformative experience. You will have the opportunity to make new friendships and confront various challenges, all while immersing yourself in a different culture. To fully benefit from this experience, it is advisable to ensure that you are adequately prepared, both physically and mentally.

    Transportation
Probox vehicles and bodaboda (motorcycles) are frequently utilized for transportation in Samburu village. After a few days of acclimatization, you may want to explore the local area, visit supermarkets, or access ATMs. However, we have a designated private bodaboda and comfortable cars that transport our volunteers to their destination they want after work. During your first few days, a member of the Kenyan team will accompany you until you feel confident navigating the routes on your own. It is important to learn how to negotiate fares with locals when using public transportation services, as relying on local taxis without bargaining knowledge can lead to higher costs. When using public transport, whether as a volunteer or a local resident, be cautious of pickpockets, especially in crowded situations. It is advisable to avoid carrying valuables or large sums of cash. For longer trips, we recommend coordinating travel plans with our officer in charge, who can arrange transportation in a private vehicle or van. Please remember that commuting to the project site is crucial.
