This project focuses on the implementation of a village Tree school program
for 3-5 year old children and adult literacy for both refugees and host
community in six villages that make up Buyiga Island. The program will be
conducted under tree due to lack of classrooms in the village, to advance play,
numeracy and literacy as part of school readiness skills for children, and
advance functional adult literacy for anyone over the age of fifteen, who had missed the opportunity of formal
education during childhood. A large range of people are targeted,
including children, youth, men, women, and older people. The program is based
on many years of research by American and other researchers which found
that young Ugandan children who are not “school ready” by the time they start
preschool (school readiness consists of a composite group of skills and
abilities these children should be able to perform by age 3) are
more likely not to complete primary or secondary school. The proposed
program – which is ideally suited to be implemented through these village Tree
- shall increase school readiness skills within 3-5 age group, linking literacy to
people’s livelihoods and needs. Additionally, the program will provide
employment and training for local young women, who would act as facilitators and
village coordinators, and potentially reach thousands of young children and
adults.
We shall start with One Village Kamusogonya as a pilot for the first six
months before enrolling to the other five villages to prevent children from
walking long distance. Our class sessions shall start from 9.00am to 12.00
afternoon for children and 3.00pm to 5.00pm for adults shall study for
effectively for three hours per day and set up play material center for
children made by the children, parents and their teachers using local materials.
Each group in the village shall be called Lit
club for both children and adults and each shall consist 15 children and 30 for
adults.
