The nation features a variety of landscapes, ranging from the Rwenzori Mountains to Lake Victoria, and is home to friendly inhabitants. Its economy is predominantly agricultural, and the population is a blend of Christians and Muslims. English and Swahili serve as the official languages, and the country boasts vibrant cultures among its numerous ethnic groups.

    The tasks associated with NGO management volunteer roles encompass a variety of support functions essential for operational efficiency. These include 

    1. Administrative duties such as filing, making calls, and managing data
    2. Marketing efforts involving social media engagement, content creation, and event promotion
    3. Fundraising activities that consist of planning events and drives
    4. Project support that covers logistics, community engagement, and reporting, as well as volunteer coordination, which involves onboarding and providing support.

    As you prepare to embark on your volunteer journey in Kampala, Uganda, we kindly encourage you to review the following essential information to ensure a smooth, safe, and fulfilling experience.

    1. Currency, Mobile Communication & Internet Access

    Upon arrival, maintaining communication with your family, fellow volunteers, and our local team is essential for your comfort and safety.

    Mobile Communication
    We strongly recommend bringing an unlocked mobile phone. Purchasing a local SIM card in Kampala is both affordable and convenient, offering significantly lower rates for local and international communication compared to international roaming services.

    SIM cards are widely available across the city and typically cost approximately USD 1. Our team or fellow volunteers will gladly assist you in locating a trusted vendor upon arrival. Please ensure your device is compatible with international SIM cards prior to travel.

    Currency & Payments
    The official currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX). Currency exchange services are available at major shopping malls, and ATMs are accessible throughout Kampala. While local transactions are conducted in UGX, US Dollars are accepted for certain services such as national park entrance fees.

    Internet Access
    Volunteers can stay connected through:

    • Wi-Fi available at homestays, cafés, and selected public areas

    • Mobile data bundles via local SIM cards

    • Portable modem devices (USB sticks) for personal use

    Online communication platforms such as email, social media, and video calling services provide cost-effective ways to stay in touch. Many volunteers also choose to document their journey through blogs or updates for sponsors.

    3. Your First Day with UCESCO Africa – Uganda

    Upon arrival at the airport, a member of the UCESCO Africa team will warmly welcome you. Communication will be coordinated via WhatsApp for convenience.

    Your official orientation will take place on the first weekday at our Kampala office. During this session:

    • You will be introduced to the organization, its mission, and ongoing programs

    • You will meet the volunteer coordinator and team members

    • You will have the opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance

    • A visit to selected project sites may be arranged

    The orientation typically concludes around 2:00 PM, after which you may visit nearby shopping centers to:

    • Purchase a local SIM card (passport required)

    • Set up mobile money services (e.g., MTN Mobile Money)

    For volunteers arriving over the weekend, optional activities such as a short city tour or safari experience can be arranged prior to the start of your placement.

    Volunteer activities are primarily conducted in the morning, allowing afternoons for optional cultural and recreational engagement. These afternoon activities may include sports, Ugandan traditional dance classes, and traditional cooking sessions, depending on volunteer interest and group size. Participation is optional and designed to enrich the cultural experience.

    At the end of each day, volunteers return to their accommodation to rest, recharge, and prepare for the following day’s activities.

    Wildlife

    The wildlife of Uganda is composed of its flora and fauna. Uganda has a wide variety of different habitats, including mountains, hills, tropical rainforest, woodland, freshwater lakes, swamps and savanna with scattered clumps of trees. The country has a biodiverse flora and fauna reflecting this range of habitats and is known for its primates, including gorillas and chimpanzees. There are ten national parks and thirteen wildlife reserves; some 345 species of mammal and 1020 species of bird have been recorded in the country.

    All volunteers should arrive at Entebbe International Airport in Kampala, Uganda. This is the main international airport in Uganda and the designated pickup location for all incoming volunteers.

    UCESCO Africa provides a reliable airport pickup service for all volunteers upon arrival.

    There can occasionally be delays with luggage. We have observed that some volunteers have experienced significant waits for their bags, sometimes up to three days. To prepare for such situations, we recommend that you pack essential items and a few clothes to change for 2 - 3 days in your carry-on bag. While luggage delays are not common, they can occur, and we want to help you avoid any unnecessary expenses, such as having to purchase clothing while waiting for your luggage.

    At UCESCO Africa, we believe that where you stay is an important part of your volunteer experience. Our volunteer accommodation is designed to provide a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment where you can relax, connect, and feel at home.

    Volunteers stay in a cozy, shared volunteer house / Hotel located within a friendly and secure community. The house offers a warm, family-like atmosphere, giving you the opportunity to build meaningful connections with fellow volunteers from around the world.

    Rooms are shared (typically 2–4 people per room with your own bed) and are furnished with comfortable beds, clean bedding, and secure storage for your belongings. Separate arrangements can be made for couples, families, or those requesting additional privacy.

    You will enjoy freshly prepared, home-cooked meals, offering a mix of local Ugandan cuisine and familiar international dishes. Special dietary needs can be accommodated with prior notice.
