This placement offers an ideal opportunity for ophthalmology students, aspiring eye doctors, or qualified optometrists to shadow and assist experienced professionals within private eye clinics in Tanzania as well as join community outreach.

It is vital for addressing critical eye care needs in low-resource settings, where access to ophthalmology services is limited and many people suffer from preventable vision problems and ocular diseases.

Through our program, volunteers play a crucial role in supplementing local eye care services, providing much-needed support while gaining invaluable hands-on experience. Eye care is a basic human right, and making it accessible for all is essential.

Volunteers will primarily work in our partnered private eye clinics to assist local staff and gain practical experience depending on their level of study and skills.

Working in our clinics offers a unique opportunity for volunteers to become familiar with the challenges and eye health issues of developing countries. All our clinics are government approved.

The work environment is very different from what you may be used to at home. You need to be open-minded and able to adapt to the limited resources and unique clinical practices. The clinic is located in Dar es Salaam, around 20 minutes from the volunteer house.

This project is open to anyone with an interest in ophthalmology or eye care who wants to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged people in Africa.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to observe and assist in various areas of ophthalmology under supervision, including:

• General eye examinations and vision testing

• Screening for refractive errors and prescribing glasses

• Assisting in minor procedures

• Observation of cataract and other common eye surgeries

• Pediatric eye care

• Preventive eye health and patient education

• Assisting optometrists and ophthalmologists with diagnostic tests (e.g., tonometry, slit-lamp exams)

• Community outreach and vision screening programs

You will work with a supervising ophthalmologist or optometrist who will provide a full orientation and guide your tasks and learning.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in ophthalmology in a different cultural and clinical setting. You can either assist or shadow the staff members depending on your skills. The type of work you will be allocated will depend on your abilities and level of study, which is essential since patient safety comes first.

Your roles may include some of the following:

• Conducting visual acuity tests under supervision

• Supporting patients during eye exams and procedures

• Helping in patient education on eye health and hygiene

• Observing diagnostic and surgical procedures

• Assisting with minor treatments under supervision

• Participating in community vision screening events

• Recording patient information and maintaining clinic organization

The facilities will differ from those in your home country, providing a unique perspective on ophthalmology in low-resource settings. Our organization occasionally runs outreach programs to underserved communities, where volunteers may assist in vision screening, distributing glasses, and educating about eye care practices.

This offers a wonderful opportunity to become acquainted with the challenges of delivering eye care in developing countries. Volunteers should bring their own scrubs and, if possible, any basic ophthalmology tools suitable for personal use under supervision.
