    About the program

    Nairobi's health system operates at a scale and under resource constraints that most students from Europe or North America never see first-hand. This elective places medical and nursing students, and qualified professionals, in hospitals and clinics across the city's suburbs and informal settlements — a mix of small local facilities and Level 3 and Level 4 district hospitals.

    You rotate through departments rather than sitting in one, which is rather the point: over a placement you are likely to meet presentations and a disease burden that simply do not turn up in your home hospitals. Tigoni Hospital, one of the regular placements, is a Level 4 district hospital in Limuru with more than 200 beds, running antenatal and maternity services including caesareans, immunisation, TB diagnosis and treatment, family planning, radiology and antiretroviral therapy.

    How much you observe versus do depends entirely on your training and year of study. Students observe and assist; qualified staff take on more. The local team will not put you beyond your competence, and you should not ask them to.

    Your exact placement is assigned closer to the time, based on availability. One practical note worth knowing before you book: transport to and from your hospital is not included in the programme fee. Most interns share an Uber and budget roughly $5–7 a day.

    Sunday - Arrival at the program destination
    Monday - Orientation. An orientation session will be conducted by the local coordinator, covering topic areas; such as safety, culture, language, places to visit, behavior, food, and other suggestion over things to do in Kenya.

    Monday - Orientation. An orientation session will be conducted by the local coordinator, covering topic areas; such as safety, culture, language, places to visit, behavior, food, and other suggestion over things to do in Kenya.
    Tuesday to Fri - Volunteer work
    Breakfast - 07:30 am onwards (provided at the accommodation)
    Leave for the project - 08:00 am
    Working hours at the placement - 09:00 to 04:00 pm
    Lunch - 01:00 pm to 02:00 pm (volunteers need to manage lunch on their own)
    Dinner - 07:30 pm  onwards (provided at the accommodation)
    The same volunteer work schedule continues from the second week onwards

    In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

    Other Skills

    Medical volunteers must provide a clean criminal background check report, CV, Passport Copy as well as other documents and credentials pertaining to their qualifications prior to joining the program. Pre Med, Medical, Nursing students, CNA’s and midwifery students can join the program.

    Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

    Airport Pickup at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport

    You will be met by our representative at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi from where you are transferred to the accommodations in Nairobi itself. 

    Accommodation

    Volunteer Accommodations is provided in a volunteer house or in a homestay. The volunteer house is taken care of by the localhost and has all the modern amenities available to ensure a comfortable stay for the volunteers. Some of the facilities available are showers, microwave, and refrigerator in the kitchen and a lounge area for the volunteers. Rooms in the volunteer house are typical dorm-style rooms with 4-8 participants of the same gender sharing a room. 

    Food & Beverages

    Volunteers are provided with 2 meals(Breakfast and Dinner) on weekdays and three meals during the weekends. Typical meals include Ugali, Chapatti, Chai (Tea), Bread and rice with vegetables and fruits. Volunteers also purchase supplies from the supermarkets and take with them packed food cooked on own to the project.

    On arrival: fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi. Our representative will meet you and take you to your accommodation in the city, where you get an orientation covering the hospital, expectations and getting around before your first shift.
