    About the program

Beyond Child Smile Organization is located in Ilboru, a peaceful residential area in Arusha, near the slopes of Mount Meru. The neighborhood is safe, green, and surrounded by small local villages where families, schools, and community centers are located. The area offers a beautiful view of the surrounding hills and is only a short distance from the town center.

Volunteers will work mainly at the swimming pool and occasionally at nearby schools where children participate in swimming lessons as part of sports and safety education. The surrounding environment is lovely and welcoming. Children from nearby schools and villages come to the pool to learn how to swim, play sports, and develop confidence in the water. Many of the children have never had formal swimming lessons before, so the project plays an important role in water safety and recreation in the community.

Volunteers stay with local Tanzanian host families in nearby close to the project area. This gives volunteers a chance to experience authentic Tanzanian culture and daily life. Accommodation is basic but comfortable, with running water and electricity, although occasional power outages may occur. Volunteers may have a private room or share with one or two other volunteers. Breakfast and dinner are usually provided by the host family, offering traditional Tanzanian meals such as rice, beans, chapati, vegetables, and tea. Living with a host family allows volunteers to become part of the community, learn some Swahili, and experience local traditions and culture. Volunteers work closely with a supportive local team, including, Local swimming instructors and coaches, Children and youth from nearby schools and communities, Teachers who accompany school groups, Community sports coordinators and Other international volunteers.

Children participating in the project are typically between 5 and 18 years old or sometime adults. Many are beginners who are learning basic swimming skills and water confidence for the first time. Volunteers assist the local instructors by helping supervise the children, teaching basic swimming techniques, organizing fun water games, and ensuring safety during swimming sessions. Volunteers do not need to be professional swim coaches, but some swimming ability and confidence in the water are important. We ask volunteers to bring: Swimwear suitable for teaching and swimming, A positive and energetic attitude, Basic swimming knowledge, Respect for local culture and community values and Patience and enthusiasm when working with children.

If volunteers wish, they can also bring helpful materials such as: Swimming goggles for children, Swim caps, Kickboards or small swimming training equipment and any Simple sports equipment for games. Most importantly, we expect volunteers to be open-minded, responsible, and committed to supporting the children and the community.
