    About the program

Empowering women and girls to rise out of poverty is essential for the sustainable development of a country. To eradicate poverty, it is necessary to empower women and girls through educational opportunities, develop their skills in income-generating activities, and provide them with associated life skills necessary for successful futures. Coming from a culturally conservative community, their options for work are limited. Vocational training in hair and beauty, tailoring, financial literacy, and adult literacy therefore offers these women and girls a sustainable source of income and knowledge. In order to achieve financial viability, girls need the tools and skills that will allow them to earn income immediately. Through training, girls can be empowered to become economically active, make decisions about their own lives, and delay marriage.

Learning income-generating activities, financial literacy, and basic education skills are essential to lifting girls out of the poverty cycle and empowering them to resist pressure to exchange sex for money—an activity that exacerbates their vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. Thus, training women and girls about income-generating activities, financial literacy, and life skills is necessary to break the poverty cycle and provide a safer alternative to transactional sex. It is upon this background that Saint Ann Foundation proposes to implement a one-year economic empowerment program for women and girls in island areas through hairdressing, tailoring, and literacy education. The program is designed with a strong curriculum where proper notes will be maintained by trainers, and ample practical opportunities will be provided free of charge. Beneficiaries will not have to pay anything for the training.

The program will be implemented with a view to equipping beneficiaries with skill sets fit for the labor market, knowledge, and expertise in the fields of hairdressing, beautification, tailoring, financial literacy, and adult literacy, developing the capabilities they require to have new sources of income and improve their social and living conditions.

    Scope of the Project

The project will be implemented on rolling basis with each cohort of beneficiaries receiving six months of training in hairdressing (emerging styles) and beautification techniques, including haircutting, dyeing, styling, and bridal makeup, as well as tailoring skills such as garment cutting, sewing, embroidery, and dressmaking. Additionally, financial literacy and adult literacy education will be incorporated to ensure that women and girls can effectively manage their income and gain basic literacy and numeracy skills. The program will encompass the following activities:

    1. Rigorous training consisting of theory and practical classes, with full opportunity availed to each candidate to practice.
    2. Classes held five days a week to ensure candidates get maximum exposure to the training material.
    3. Six-month duration for each cohort to complete the training.
    4. Establishment of a fully operational training center where beneficiaries will be allowed to continue practicing even after completing the course.
    5. Business training where beneficiaries will be taught to compete effectively in the market.
    6. Establishment of hair styling, beautification, and tailoring centers where beneficiaries will have the opportunity to put their acquired skills into practice and earn an income.
    7. Financial literacy training to equip women and girls with money management skills, saving techniques, and financial planning strategies.
    8. Adult literacy education to help beneficiaries develop reading, writing, and numeracy skills essential for personal and business success.

    Objectives of the Program

    1. To foster the economic independence of women and girls through skill development.
    2. To improve women and girls' livelihoods, transforming them from domestic workers to salon owners, tailors, inventors, creatives, and more.
    3. To support women's access to factors of production, such as easy-to-use equipment and materials required to run modern hair, beauty, and tailoring businesses.
    4. To boost women and girls' self-confidence, as learning a new skill is highly valuable and confidence-boosting.
    5. To empower women and girls to forge their paths, from the world of beauty and tailoring to the world of business.
    6. To equip women and girls with financial literacy skills to manage their income, savings, and investments effectively.
    7. To provide adult literacy education to enable beneficiaries to read, write, and understand basic financial and business concepts.

    Volunteer Activities

To ensure the success of the program, volunteers will be engaged in various activities, including:

    1. Resource Mobilization: Assisting in fundraising efforts, securing donations of hairdressing and tailoring tools, and sourcing materials required for training and business startup. This activity is critical as it ensures that all beneficiaries have access to the necessary tools and resources to successfully complete their training and start their businesses.
    2. Training Support: Assisting trainers in delivering hairdressing, beautification, tailoring, financial literacy, and adult literacy classes, providing hands-on demonstrations, and offering mentorship to beneficiaries.
    3. Business Mentorship: Guiding beneficiaries on business development, marketing strategies, and customer service to help them establish and sustain their businesses.
    4. Financial Literacy Workshops: Educating women and girls on money management, savings strategies, budgeting, and investment opportunities to promote long-term financial independence.
    5. Adult Literacy Tutoring: Helping beneficiaries improve their reading, writing, and numeracy skills to enhance their ability to manage businesses and daily activities.
    6. Workshop Facilitation: Conducting workshops on financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and soft skills to enhance the participants' readiness for the job market.
    7. Center Management: Supporting the daily operations of the training center, organizing schedules, and ensuring a conducive learning environment for beneficiaries.
    8. Community Outreach: Raising awareness about the program within the community, identifying potential beneficiaries, and engaging local stakeholders for support.
    9. Monitoring and Evaluation: Tracking the progress of trainees, collecting feedback, and assessing the program's impact to enhance future implementations.
    10. Social Media and Advocacy: Promoting the program through digital platforms, sharing success stories, and advocating for women’s economic empowerment.

Volunteers will play a crucial role in the program’s implementation, ensuring that women and girls receive the necessary training and support to thrive in the beauty, tailoring, and literacy industries and beyond.

    Free-time activities

In your free time there is many options for activities! A lot of our volunteers like to take extended weekends to do safari, gorilla trekking or adventure water sports. All of these are at the volunteers own cost, but are organized through our local partners to ensure the best price and experience. Our close proximity to Kampala means there is plenty of opportunity to explore the craft markets, eat local food and go to local events including soccer games. We encourage volunteers to travel on their weekends and will help arrange trips or activities. And we are always very flexible with our volunteers and making sure we give them the best experience we can in our means.
