    About the program

    About the program

Tanzania's economy leans heavily on tourism, and in Arusha — the gateway town for the Serengeti and Kilimanjaro — fluent English is one of the clearest routes a young person has into a decent job. The public primary schools here are short of trained staff, and that is exactly where this teaching project places you.

You will be based in a primary school in or around Arusha, working alongside the Tanzanian teachers rather than in place of them. Most of your time goes on the parts of English that classes of forty-plus children rarely get enough of: pronunciation, conversation practice and reading aloud. You will also help run the e-learning initiative our local team set up, where schools are supplied with tablets loaded with educational software built into the normal timetable rather than bolted on beside it.

Outside the classroom you will assist teachers with day-to-day duties and help organise special events for the children. If you happen to arrive during a school holiday period, there is the option of working at a children's home instead.

No teaching qualification is required — a solid grasp of English and the patience to use it are enough. Weekends are your own, and Arusha is an unusually good base for them, with game drives in the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater and a realistic chance of seeing the Big Five within reach.
