As a volunteer teaching English in Zanzibar, you’ll help students develop skills that can shape their long-term opportunities. BACKGROUND TO THE TEACHING PROGRAM
In the early 2000s, the governments of Tanzania and Zanzibar expanded access to education by reducing primary school fees, leading to major increases in enrolment. Today, around 96% of primary-school-age children attend school. However, larger class sizes have followed, with an average of roughly 53 pupils per teacher, often higher in rural areas. At the same time, funding pressures have raised concerns about education quality, particularly in Zanzibar.
Teaching approaches in Zanzibar can be heavily exam-focused, with repetition used to memorise content rather than build understanding. This is especially challenging for English, since many secondary school subjects are taught in English. By supporting more interactive learning and consistent practice, volunteers can help students improve comprehension and strengthen the foundations needed for future success.
With more than a quarter of Zanzibar’s population living below the national poverty line, education remains one of the strongest pathways to improved prospects. Tourism is a fast-growing sector on the islands, and English fluency can significantly increase a young person’s chances of accessing stable, meaningful work.
This volunteer teaching program supports local schools and childcare centres by adding extra classroom support where it is needed most. Volunteers typically help teach English, Maths, and other subjects, while sharing skills and cultural perspectives. No previous teaching experience is required. Initiative, creativity, and enthusiasm are what matter. Local staff help you settle in and provide guidance so you can contribute effectively while gaining valuable experience.
Support is mainly focused on primary schools, with secondary school placements sometimes available on request. Some childcare projects also include nursery classes, where volunteers may assist with early-years learning and basic English.
TEACHING VOLUNTEER PLACEMENT EXAMPLES
Paje Primary School – A short walk from the volunteer house, this school teaches around 120 students aged 8–14. Students follow the national curriculum and are grouped by age. Volunteers provide extra English support to strengthen learning and help prepare students for future opportunities. Founded in 2019, the school continues to grow with support from partner organisations.
Pendo High School – Established as a high school for students aged 12+, it has expanded to include multiple departments, allowing enrolment from kindergarten through graduation. Ongoing exposure to English from a young age can help students build stronger language skills and confidence over time, supporting future pathways in tourism and beyond.
As a volunteer, you’ll bring an open mind and a practical, creative approach, especially when planning lessons that keep students engaged and motivated. Your support helps local teachers, enriches classroom learning, and gives students more opportunities to practise English in a meaningful way.
Many students make the most progress when they can learn with fluent English speakers, improving both ability and future options. Volunteers interested in education-related careers also gain practical experience that can strengthen their profile.
OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN TEACHING CHILDREN IN TANZANIA
Experience – No teaching background is required. Consistent exposure to a fluent English speaker is highly valuable, and volunteers who are resourceful and proactive can make a real contribution.
TEFL Course – To prepare well and maximise your impact, consider completing an internationally accredited 60-hour online TEFL course before you travel.
Return Airport Transfer – Return airport transfers are not included in the program fee, but the local team can help arrange onward travel to the airport or your next destination. Organising this locally allows flexibility if plans change, and costs can often be shared with other participants. Public transport and tuk-tuks are not recommended for airport transfers due to convenience and safety.
Resources – Classroom resources may be limited. Volunteers are encouraged to bring simple materials each day to support activities and engagement. Planning ahead will help you get the most from your placement.
Project Locations – Teaching and childcare placements may be at the same site, allowing volunteers to travel together. Childcare volunteers usually support preschool-aged children, while teaching volunteers work with older students, with different daily activities.
Schools supported by volunteers are privately run, as local legislation restricts volunteering in government-funded schools.
Yellow Fever – Yellow fever vaccination requirements have been updated. It is legally required for travellers arriving from, or transiting (12+ hours) through, countries with yellow fever risk. Even so, some travellers outside these criteria have been asked for proof on arrival. To avoid complications, it may be wise to get vaccinated in advance and plan ahead for timing.
Mandatory ZIC Insurance – Visitors to Zanzibar are required to purchase separate insurance through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) for the duration of their stay. This must be arranged before travel, or entry may be refused.
