Pregnancy, Birth & Baby Program - East Coast, Zanzibar

    About Boresha Maisha Projects

The saying "Boresha Maisha" means "improving lives" in Swahili and that is exactly what we wish to accomplish with these volunteer projects – to create possibilities for communities and individuals to work abroad for a cause and grow and help create a better future.
Volunteering abroad, in Tanzania, can be a challenge, especially since today there are hundreds of volunteer organizations out there and it's hard to know which one is the right one. Boresha Maisha Projects emerged from a pursuit to inspire and support community development ethically, and over the long term. Having seen the bad effects of "voluntourism" many of the volunteering programs create, we wished to find more sustainable projects and causes, where the impacts will last and, not be forgotten by the next arriving volunteers. We wish to create programs specifically for volunteers or students with the appropriate skills and motivations, whereby 'capacity building' is the central heart of our projects.

    Program Overview

Our Pregnancy, Birth & Baby Program immerses you in comprehensive midwifery and antenatal care, from the moment a woman discovers she's pregnant through the critical postnatal period. Working in local hospitals on the East Coast, you'll witness and assist in deliveries, support vulnerable mothers and newborns, and extend care into marginalized communities through outreach days – all while learning and working in a real-world setting.

    Target Community

You will work in a local public hospital on this program which services pregnant women and new mothers – many from low-income communities with limited access to quality maternal healthcare. These are women facing the vulnerability of pregnancy and childbirth often without adequate medical support, education, or resources. Your presence directly impacts their safety, their babies' health, and their confidence as new mothers.

    The Challenge

Maternal and child health remains a critical challenge in Tanzania. Many women lack access to quality antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, and postnatal support. High delivery volumes, limited resources, and the need for compassionate, expert care create an environment where every skilled pair of hands can ensure a safer and better outcome for babies and mothers.

Additionally, marginalized communities often have virtually no access to basic maternal health education or preventative care. We aim to provide women access to basic healthcare, where they can ask questions, resolve general issues that often go untreated, and more.

    Our Partnership Approach

We work directly with the hospital's midwifery and antenatal departments, integrating qualified volunteers into the clinical team. Beyond the hospital walls, we aim to continue to operate a community outreach program, providing basic-level maternal and child health care, antenatal education, postnatal support, and health talks to marginalized communities. This dual approach ensures you're contributing to both clinical excellence and grassroots health equity whereby women have a free and safe space to learn about staying safe in pregnancy, birth and baby, or can access a free clinic to check issues or concerns they may have.

    Your Role & Hands-On Activities

    Hospital-Based Work:

    • Delivery Assistance: Assist with or observe deliveries, providing support to mothers and learning from experienced midwives
    • Antenatal Care: Help conduct antenatal consultations, take vital signs, record patient histories, and provide health education
    • Postnatal Care: Monitor mothers and newborns in the postnatal ward, assist with newborn checks, vaccinations, and basic neonatal care
    • Labour Ward Support: Assist midwives during labour, provide emotional support to mothers, and help manage the fast-paced labour environment
    • C-Section Observation: Observe or assist with caesarean sections (depending on your training and qualifications)
    • Ward Rounds: Participate in morning ward rounds and ongoing patient monitoring
    • Clinic Work: Assist in OPD consultations, help with triage, and support various maternal health clinics (RCH, HIV, diabetes, etc.)

    Community Outreach:

    • Antenatal Education: Deliver health talks and education classes to pregnant women in marginalized communities
    • Health Education: Provide nutrition, wellness, and maternal health education to community members
    • Basic Care Provision: Offer basic-level maternal and child health services to communities with limited access

    What You'll Learn & Gain

    • Midwifery & Obstetric Skills: Develop hands-on experience in delivery, antenatal care, and postnatal management in a high-volume setting
    • Neonatal Care Expertise: Learn newborn assessment, basic care, and early detection of complications
    • Emergency Response: Gain experience managing obstetric emergencies and complications
    • Community Health Approach: Understand how to deliver maternal health education and care in resource-limited, marginalized settings
    • Cultural Competency: Learn how pregnancy, birth, and motherhood are understood and managed within Tanzanian culture
    • Team Collaboration: Work alongside experienced midwives and healthcare professionals, building professional relationships
    • Resilience & Compassion: Develop emotional resilience while providing compassionate care during vulnerable moments
    • Global Health Perspective: Deepen understanding of maternal health inequities and solutions in low-resource settings

Turn Your Volunteer Experience Into an Accredited Diploma

Your time volunteering can become much more than an unforgettable experience. Alongside your placement, you have the opportunity to complete an internationally recognised accredited diploma, built entirely around the work you're already doing in Tanzania. With no exams and only a small amount of additional work completed online throughout your programme, you'll graduate with a recognised qualification that can strengthen your CV, support university applications and, in many countries, even contribute towards academic credit.

This program does require a certain amount of flexibility as the needs of the hospital can vary depending on the day. Whilst you will be focused in the maternity department, there may be some cases where you need to assist outside of maternity too, but only within your feild.

A Day in Your Life - Pregnancy, Birth & Baby Program

    8:45 AM - Arrival & Orientation

Your day begins early as you arrive at the hospital. You'll change into scrubs, meet with your supervisor for a brief orientation, and join the medical team for morning ward rounds in the maternity, antenatal, or postnatal departments.

9:00 AM - Morning Clinical Work

You'll be assigned to support various aspects of maternal and child health depending on the day's needs – this might include antenatal consultations, labour ward support, postnatal care, or assisting in the OPD. Each day brings different learning opportunities as you respond to the real needs of the department.

    12:30 PM - Lunch Break

Take time to process the morning's experiences and recharge before the afternoon ahead.

1:30 PM - Afternoon Clinical Duties

Return to support ongoing maternal and child health care. The afternoon pace often allows for more in-depth learning and observation. You might assist with clinic work, ward rounds, lab support, or other clinical duties depending on departmental needs and your supervisor's guidance.

    2-3 PM - Home Time

Leave the hospital, reflecting on another day of meaningful maternal and child health work.

    Weekly Community Outreach:

Once weekly, you'll join our community outreach team in our vehicle to visit marginalized communities. You'll support various maternal and child health activities including antenatal education, postnatal home visits, basic health services, and community health talks – all tailored to the needs of the communities we serve.

This aspect of the program is very much driven by the initiative of the volunteers on the program, so we invite you to work with the in-country coordination team to help promote this weekly, as it has the capacity to grow as we see positive outcomes.

Schedule: Monday-Friday hospital work with one day per week dedicated to community outreach. (the outreach aspect being something we aim to increase based on volunteers ability and enthusiasm)

Please note that this schedule is intended as a general overview of a standard day within the program. As this is a midwifery and maternal health-based placement, there may be opportunities at times to adjust or split shifts depending on hospital needs and volunteer interest. In the past, some participants have chosen to support afternoon or later maternity shifts in order to gain broader exposure to labour ward and birth-related care.

While volunteers are primarily based at the main regional hospital on the East Coast, there may also be opportunities to work across other hospitals and healthcare facilities along Zanzibar’s east coast that operate within the same network and support similar maternity and maternal health services.

    Alojamiento

Our Home Away From Home - Paje Hostel

During your stay, you'll be based at our vibrant volunteer hostel located in the heart of Paje on Zanzibar’s beautiful east coast. It’s genuinely one of the best places to base yourself while volunteering on the island, combining a social atmosphere, comfortable accommodation, and an amazing location just minutes from the beach.

    Family-Style Living

Our warm and friendly team is based on-site, so there is always someone around to help with whatever you need. The hostel has become a home away from home for many volunteers, and it’s very common for people to stay in touch long after they leave.

    Location

The House is located on the main road, directly in Paje, one of Zanzibar’s most popular and lively beach towns. We are only a short 3–5 minute walk from the stunning white sand beach and turquoise water the island is famous for. Everything you need is within walking distance, including cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, gyms, pharmacies, shops, ATMs, and local transport options.

The main hospital is located about 35 minutes from the hostel by transport, and both local Dala Dala, Tuk Tuk and sometimes the volunteer vehicle is available. Most volunteers going to this placement choose to split a ride fare making it very low cost.

    The Rooms

All rooms are clean, comfortable, and newly renovated, each with private ensuite bathrooms and hot showers.

Rooms are shared dorm-style accommodation with other volunteers and are gender-specific where appropriate. Sharing with other participants is a huge part of the experience, and many volunteers leave having made lifelong friendships with the people they stayed with.

    Common Spaces

We have a large swimming pool, outdoor couches and lounge spaces, a vibrant bar area, cozy hangout spots, and restaurant-style dining spaces where everyone comes together throughout the day. Whether you want to relax quietly, meet other volunteers, plan weekend trips, or enjoy social evenings together, there’s always something happening around the hostel.

    Food & Connection

Breakfast and dinner are included each day, and dinner especially tends to become a really social part of the experience where volunteers, travelers, and staff all come together at the end of the day to share stories and connect.

We also provide Wi-Fi throughout the hostel (although, as with much of Zanzibar, occasional outages can happen from time to time).

    Real Support

Our team genuinely cares about making sure volunteers feel safe, supported, and comfortable throughout their stay. Whether you need help arranging transport, booking activities, adjusting to life on the island, or simply have questions, our coordinators and local staff are always there to assist.

While this is still volunteer-style accommodation in a developing country, we pride ourselves on offering a much more comfortable, social, and supportive environment than most standard volunteer housing on the island.

    Comida y bebida

Breakfast and Dinner is included. Breakfast is buffet style with toast, eggs, pancakes, and fruit. Dinner will be a mixture of local and western cuisine, generally consisting of rice-based dishes, pastas, stews, chicken, chips, etc! Our amazing chefs are very accommodating to any dietary requirements, special requests or otherwise.
