Join us on our Teaching Assistant program in the beautiful lakeside town of Mangochi, Malawi. This initiative is all about supporting local educators and improving learning opportunities for children from under-resourced communities. As a Teaching Assistant, you’ll help bring core subjects like Math, English, History, and Science to life, boosting essential skills like literacy, numeracy, and communication among bright young minds.

Not only will you be making a lasting impact on students’ lives, but you’ll also enjoy deep cultural immersion, personal development, and unforgettable memories along the way.

You will be supported by the local teacher, or can join in with another volunteer if there a a few of you .The program is flexible for you to create your own lesson plans in subjects you wish to teach and you will also have meetings with the local teacher, who may ask you to teach a certain subject. Afternoons are for creating your lesson plans for the following day. You do not need to bring anything to the program but it may help to bring along some pre-made worksheets, or objects/ tools for the classroom which can help you in your lessons. This could be in the form of worksheets, stickers, flashcards, sports equipment, etc.

Your Role

• Collaborate with local teachers to support lesson planning and classroom activities across core subjects like Math, English, History, and Science.
• Help organise and participate in creative activities—whether it’s painting, playing football, singing songs, or putting on a play.
• Join an engaging orientation that gives you meaningful insight into Malawi’s culture, traditions, and daily life.
• Be a positive role model, offering encouragement and guidance that helps students reach their potential.
• Connect with the local community to better understand their challenges and contribute in a practical, respectful, and meaningful way.
• Assist in preparing lessons, participating in school events, and supporting educational initiatives that leave a lasting impact.

Known for its colourful markets, friendly locals, and mix of Muslim and Christian traditions, it’s a great base for exploring nearby fishing villages and scenic resorts. It offers a unique blend of cultural experiences, access to nearby beaches and wildlife areas, and a chance to engage with welcoming local communities in a region rich in natural beauty.
