    À propos du programme

We all know that the Amazon rainforest has been continuously destroyed by massive deforestation, thereby depriving it of its natural resources. But what long-term effects does this have on the biodiversity and the way of life of the local Indigenous population? Exciting questions that need to be answered and, above all, solutions found. Our Rainforest Reserve project in the Peruvian region of Madre de Dios has set itself the task of developing and implementing sustainable solutions. Together, the team works with great passion to protect, regenerate and understand the biodiversity of the Peruvian Amazon. By working with local farmers and research institutions, space is created for education, with the aim of spreading sustainable ways of life and initiating fair, regenerative development in the region.

Over the last decade, the project has already planted over 250,000 trees representing around 400 species. These now serve as part of the living seed bank for the reforestation center. The work also brought an area of around 60 hectares of rainforest back to life. The knowledge gained at the reforestation center is collected in a research project and shared with local farmers and growers. Since 2006, the research program has been working continuously to expand the knowledge of economically productive and viable restoration strategies.

The research also supports the development of processes for the sustainable harvesting of non-timber forest products from wild and cultivated plants. In 2019, the project began to link the restoration activities with the production of non-timber forest products in order to offer the local communities a new livelihood. For example, an organic start-up in the region is involved in the production of essential oils, which are distilled from the trees specially planted for this purpose. There is also a great focus on supplying farmers with seedlings, connecting them with local and international markets and supporting the development of regenerative supply chains.

The Amazon is the lungs of our earth and is home to over 30% of all plant species known to date. In Peru alone, the Amazon covers around 60% of the total land area, an area as large as Turkey. In order to protect this diversity in the long term, our Rainforest Reserve and the team there of over 20 full-time employees, volunteers and interns need your active support. As a volunteer, all you need is physical fitness and the drive to support the rainforest, even if or exactly because it means to get your hands dirty. Even though you will work closely with the project team, no prior Spanish skills are required, as the team can communicate in English. Furthermore, all equipment will be provided at the project site - looking forward to seeing you!

Your tasks in the Rainforest Reserve are varied and change depending on the season and day of the week. Common activities are:

    • collect seeds, grow and plant tree seedlings
    • agricultural activities
    • research projects
    • community work with indigenous people

Basically, you can get involved in agricultural activities and help with reforestation and the protection of the rainforest. You can get your hands dirty while preparing the soil for seed beds and nursery pots and later help plant tree seedlings in their final location on the farm. You will also be involved in the cocoa harvest and all the processing steps that go with it. In addition to cocoa, there are many other agricultural fruits and vegetables to harvest. During your time in the project, you will also learn from experienced Amazon agroforesters how to understand, protect and regenerate the biodiversity of the Peruvian Amazon. You will help with research projects by taking over the registration of reforested trees using an app. You will also support the enforcement of indigenous rights and learn valuable things about the autonomy and wisdom of indigenous peoples. You will also help with all your heart to spread the sustainable way of life and to bring it closer to the guests in the Rainforest Reserve. If you enjoy photography, you are welcome to take on the task of documenting the plants, flowers and fruits. In the long term, your commitment will make an important contribution to spreading a fair and regenerative way of life. You will ensure the continued existence of this unique ecosystem.

    Reserva Nacional Tambopata

The reserve is one of the most important but also most vulnerable protected areas in the Madre de Dios region and is located in close proximity to the regional capital Puerto Maldonado and the border with Brazil and Bolivia. Tambopata is also home to several indigenous communities. The Amazon region represents life with all its colorful, sonorous and vibrant riches. There are thousands of species of plants and animals here. It is the perfect region to discover the natural jungle. Because it is not very well known, this region offers the opportunity to marvel at the large, intact areas of Peru's rainforest - a rarity - without encountering many tourists. The diversity of flora and fauna in the national reserve is breathtaking and the park is particularly easy to visit by boat.

    Puerto Maldonado

The small town in the southeast of Peru has just under 80,000 inhabitants and is located on the Transocéanica road, which has connected the Pacific in Peru with the Atlantic in Brazil since 2011. The city, which was named after the explorer Faustino Maldonado, is also often referred to as the gateway to the rainforest. From there you have the perfect starting point for excursions into the wilderness. But the city itself also has some beautiful places to offer. For example, take a look at the Plaza de Armas - the main square in the city center. The geometrically designed square with mango trees and palm trees invites you to linger and you can admire the architecture of the Japanese community. Puerto Maldonado also has the Puente Billinghurst. A bridge that crosses the Rio Madre de Dios and is the longest bridge in Peru with a length of 723 meters. From there you have a magical view of the river and the surrounding landscape.
