A Different Kind of Gap Year in Tanzania

This isn't a traditional volunteer placement. It's a 6 or 12-week all-inclusive international Academy combining a Veterinary & Animal Welfare internship, accredited Level 3 qualification, Global Citizenship education, safari, travel across Tanzania, international flights and cohort-based gap year life.

Think study abroad, internship, gap year and African adventure — built into one structured experience.

The Diploma of Global Citizenship in Wildlife Conservation – Veterinary & Animal Welfare is based in Arusha, northern Tanzania, combining hands-on animal welfare experience and veterinary exposure with structured learning, personal development, cultural immersion and travel.

Tanzania becomes home while you live alongside an international Academy cohort and work consistently with a locally led animal welfare organisation and qualified veterinarian. Some days are spent caring for rescued animals; others may take you into communities for veterinary outreach, vaccination initiatives, home visits, preventative healthcare or animal rescues.

Around your placement, you'll take part in workshops, cultural experiences, personal development and a collaborative Legacy Project — while experiencing Tanzania through safari, mountains, waterfalls, coffee country, local culture, weekly adventures and major overland travel.

Alongside the experience, you'll complete the academic requirements of an accredited Level 3 Diploma in Global Citizenship, giving you a recognised educational outcome alongside substantial international practical experience.

Your Veterinary & Animal Welfare Internship

At the heart of your Academy experience is your placement with a local animal welfare organisation and qualified veterinarian in Arusha.

The shelter primarily supports dogs and cats rescued following abandonment, injury, illness, neglect or mistreatment. Your work may include feeding, walking, bathing, enrichment, socialisation, animal behaviour, rehabilitation and supporting animals during recovery.

But this isn't simply a shelter placement.

A large part of the project happens out in the community, making every week different. Alongside the veterinary team, you may participate in home visits, vaccination campaigns, preventative healthcare, rescue operations, community education and treatment of sick or injured animals. Outreach can involve dogs and cats as well as donkeys, cows and other animals.

Because this is a real animal welfare organisation, your days are shaped by the animals and communities currently requiring support rather than a staged volunteer itinerary.

Animal Welfare Is About People Too

Rescuing an animal can change that animal's life. Sustainable animal welfare also asks why the animal needed rescuing in the first place.

Access to affordable veterinary care can be limited, vaccination coverage remains important for diseases such as rabies, and attitudes towards animals can differ considerably between cultures.

Creating lasting improvement therefore involves more than rescue. It requires preventative healthcare, vaccination, responsible ownership, education, trust and culturally appropriate community engagement.

You'll explore how animal welfare connects with people, communities, economics, culture, public health, One Health and the environment.

Learn Before You Try to Lead

Our approach is built around strengthening the work of people already creating change in Tanzania.

You'll work under the guidance of the local team and qualified veterinarian, with your responsibilities matched to your experience and the needs of the animals.

You don't need to be studying veterinary science to participate. Animal welfare involves far more than clinical procedures, and everyday care, exercise, enrichment, rehabilitation, socialisation and outreach all make valuable contributions.

At the same time, participants without veterinary qualifications aren't treated as veterinarians simply because they're volunteering abroad. Clinical activities are undertaken only where appropriate and under professional supervision.

    More Than Volunteering: Global Citizenship

Your placement becomes a practical classroom for exploring much bigger questions.

Through interactive Global Citizenship workshops, you'll explore ethical volunteering, animal welfare, One Health, sustainability, cultural perspectives, capacity building and community-led change.

You'll consider questions such as: Why might veterinary care be inaccessible? How are animal and human health connected? How do culture and economics influence animal welfare? And how can we advocate for change without assuming our own cultural perspective is the only correct one?

The learning becomes powerful because you're not discussing these ideas hypothetically. You're experiencing the realities behind them every week.

    Leave Behind Something Useful

As your understanding develops, you'll work with the local team towards a collaborative Legacy Project based on something they identify as genuinely useful.

This might involve animal enrichment systems, adoption resources, vaccination awareness, responsible ownership materials, community education, rehabilitation resources or support for outreach campaigns.

You first listen, observe and understand. Then you develop something with the organisation, not for it, creating a practical handover designed to remain useful after you leave Tanzania.

Live, Learn & Travel Through Tanzania

The Academy isn't only about what you contribute. It's also about what happens to you while living somewhere completely different from home.

Weekly personal-development sessions explore confidence, resilience, independence, identity, communication, leadership and cultural adjustment. You'll learn practical Swahili, experience Tanzanian culture and learn from local professionals, community partners and guest speakers.

And travel isn't an optional extra you have to organise around your internship. It's built into the Academy.

You'll experience northern Tanzania through safari, waterfalls, mountains, coffee country, cultural communities, local food and regular Adventure Days, alongside major travel experiences built into your program itinerary.

Academy participants arrive on set intake dates and live together at our Academy home in Arusha, creating the social atmosphere of a true gap year experience. Expect shared meals, workshops, games and movie nights, Thursday socials, adventures, weekends away and plenty of spontaneous plans.

    Finish With More Than Memories

By the end of your Academy, you'll have gained practical exposure to animal welfare, veterinary outreach, animal behaviour and rehabilitation, rescue, preventative healthcare, community education and One Health.

You'll also develop skills in teamwork, adaptability, communication, critical thinking, cultural awareness, independence and responsible international engagement.

For participants considering veterinary science, animal care, animal behaviour, zoology, wildlife conservation, public health, One Health or related fields, this provides particularly relevant international exposure.

But you don't need to have your future figured out before you arrive.

It's not just an internship. It's not just a qualification. And it's definitely not just a holiday.

It's six or twelve weeks of living, learning, volunteering and travelling in Tanzania — with the structure, support and inclusions to turn a gap year into something you can carry forward.

    Journée typique

    A Typical Day

Life at Boresha Global Academy follows a consistent weekly rhythm, combining your Veterinary & Animal Welfare placement with Global Citizenship learning, culture, personal development, social life and adventure.

Mornings | Your Veterinary & Animal Welfare Placement

Weekdays begin with breakfast at your Academy home base before heading out for your placement, usually starting around 9am.

Many days begin by meeting one of Arusha’s highly experienced qualified veterinarians in town before heading out together by 4x4 into Arusha and surrounding communities for veterinary outreach.

No two days are quite the same. You may respond to an injured or sick animal, assist with a rescue, visit owners whose animals require treatment, support vaccination and preventative-care initiatives, or help with community education around animal welfare and responsible ownership.

Depending on current cases and your experience, you may also gain exposure to medical treatment, wound care, vaccinations, rehabilitation and veterinary procedures or surgeries under professional supervision. The veterinarian is highly engaged with volunteers and aims to make the placement genuinely educational and hands-on wherever appropriate.

Other days are spent at the local rescue shelter supporting dogs and cats through feeding, walking, cleaning, socialisation, behaviour work, enrichment and rehabilitation, as well as caring for animals recovering from injury or illness.

And occasionally, something completely unexpected happens! Outreach can involve animals beyond dogs and cats, from livestock to more unusual cases — the team has even previously assisted with a giraffe and her newborn calf.

As the program progresses, you’ll become more familiar with the animals, team and wider challenges surrounding animal welfare in Tanzania, while working towards a Legacy Project developed around something the local organisation identifies as genuinely useful.

    Tuesday | Global Citizenship

After placement, Tuesday afternoons focus on Global Citizenship and ethical international engagement.

Through interactive workshops and discussions, you’ll explore topics such as ethical volunteering, cultural perspectives, animal welfare, conservation, One Health, public health, root causes, sustainability and community-led change.

    Wednesday | Culture & Connection

After placement, Wednesday afternoons are more experiential.

Depending on the week, you might have a Swahili lesson, Tanzanian cooking class, Maasai cultural experience, traditional art, music or dance workshop, guest speaker or another cultural activity.

It’s a fun way to experience Tanzania beyond your placement and become increasingly comfortable in the country you’re calling home.

Thursday | Personal Growth + Social Night

After placement, Thursday turns the focus towards personal development.

Your Personal Growth and Global Impact Journal sessions explore confidence, identity, values, independence, resilience, empathy, leadership, communication and cultural adjustment, while giving you time to reflect on everything you’re experiencing.

Thursday evening brings everyone together for a relaxed cohort debrief before our regular social night. Some weeks we’ll organise something at home; other weeks the group heads out together in Arusha.

Friday | Placement + Free Afternoon

Friday is generally another placement day, with some flexibility depending on current veterinary cases and program requirements.

Your afternoon is free. Explore Arusha, grab lunch with friends, relax at home, head to the gym or pool, or enjoy some downtime before the weekend.

    Saturday | Adventure Day

Saturday is usually Adventure Day, when Tanzania itself becomes part of your education.

Across the program, you’ll experience northern Tanzania through waterfall hikes, coffee country, cultural experiences, hot springs, cycling, local food and adventures around Mount Meru, Kilimanjaro and Lake Manyara.

Some weekends become bigger adventures. Your program includes an unforgettable northern Tanzania safari, while 12-week participants also travel to Zanzibar for Swahili coastal culture, tropical beaches and island life.

    Sunday | Reset

Sunday is yours. Sleep in, explore Arusha, go for brunch, spend time with friends, call home or simply relax.

    More Than a Weekly Schedule

Although the weekly rhythm stays familiar, your experience develops considerably over time.

The shelter and veterinary work that feel unfamiliar in Week 1 become very different as you learn the routines, recognise individual animals, build relationships with the team and better understand the realities surrounding animal welfare in Tanzania.

Between it all there’ll be rescues, safari, waterfalls, road trips, dinners, party nights, new foods, cultural experiences and spontaneous adventures with your Academy cohort.

Travel Is Built Into the Experience

One of the things that makes Boresha Global Academy different from a traditional internship is that travel isn't something you have to organise around your program — it's built into it.

Your Academy fee includes a calendar of Adventure Days, cultural experiences, safari and major overland travel across Tanzania. We want you to finish your program feeling like you've genuinely experienced the country, not simply travelled between your accommodation and placement each day.

    Saturday Adventure Days

Most Saturdays are Adventure Days, when you'll head out with your Academy cohort to explore northern Tanzania.

Across the program, experiences may include Mount Meru waterfall hikes, Moshi and Kilimanjaro, coffee country and Chagga culture, Maasai experiences, cycling through Mto wa Mbu and banana plantations, Lake Manyara, canoeing, natural hot springs, local food and markets, Cultural Heritage and Arusha National Park.

Your exact itinerary may vary with season, weather and local conditions, but regular Adventure Days are included throughout the Academy.

    Safari, Overland Travel & Zanzibar

Some of the biggest adventures happen on the road.

Both the 6 and 12-week Academies include major travel beyond Arusha, giving you the opportunity to experience completely different sides of Tanzania as part of your program.

On the 6-Week Academy, you'll combine your northern Tanzania experience with safari, the Usambara Mountains and an overland journey towards the Swahili Coast and Zanzibar. You'll swap Arusha and safari country for tropical island life, beaches, ocean adventures and Swahili culture before returning to your Academy home.

The 12-Week Flagship Academy gives you even more time to explore. Alongside your Zanzibar overland adventure, you'll experience an extended safari journey through Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, continuing towards Mwanza and the shores of Lake Victoria.

It's not simply a weekend safari added onto an internship. Travel across Tanzania is intentionally woven into the Academy experience.

Culture, Social Life & Free Time

The experiences continue during the week too. Depending on the schedule, afternoons may include Swahili, Tanzanian cooking, local art, music, dance and cultural workshops.

Back at your Academy home, expect games and movie nights, shared dinners, Thursday social and party nights, and plenty of spontaneous plans with the people you're living alongside.

Sundays are generally yours. Sleep in, relax, explore Arusha, meet friends or plan an extra adventure.

Your scheduled Adventure Days, safari, overland journeys and organised Academy cultural experiences are included in your program fee. Anything you independently organise during your personal free time is at your own expense.

The idea is simple: come to Tanzania for your internship, learning and qualification — but leave feeling like you've actually travelled, lived and adventured through Tanzania too.

You bring your spending money. We take care of the rest.

Transfert de l'aéroport Kilimanjaro International Airport

Because your international flights are arranged as part of the Academy program, we'll know exactly when to expect you.

When you land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a member of our local team will be waiting to greet you and welcome you to Tanzania. From there, your airport transfer is fully arranged, taking you directly to your Academy home base in Arusha where you can settle in, meet the team and begin getting to know your new home.

After a long international journey, there's no need to worry about navigating transport, arranging taxis or working out where to go — we'll be there from the moment you arrive.

    Logement

For the duration of your program, The White House of Tanzania becomes your home in Arusha — a comfortable, social and welcoming base where you'll live alongside your Academy cohort and meet travellers from around the world.

This isn't basic student accommodation. Academy participants stay in comfortable twin or double rooms with their own private bathroom, quality beds, linen, towels, storage and modern amenities. You'll also have Wi-Fi throughout the property, regular housekeeping and full private security, giving you a comfortable and secure place to settle into life in Tanzania.

    More Than Somewhere to Sleep

The White House has been welcoming international travellers to Arusha for more than a decade and was created around the idea of being a home away from home. There are plenty of spaces to find your own favourite spot, whether you want to socialise, study, relax or simply switch off after a busy day.

Around the property you'll find large outdoor hangout areas, gardens, comfortable lounges, a bar and restaurant, pool table, board games, sports and games areas, a movie thetre and social spaces, with plenty of room for the whole cohort to come together.

Meals are served at home too, with breakfast, lunch and dinner included Monday–Saturday and breakfast and dinner on Sundays, making shared meals another part of everyday Academy life.

The Social Side of Academy Life

Your home base is also where much of the fun happens.

Expect games nights, movie nights, dinners, sports, themed events, drinks, Thursday social and party nights, plus plenty of spontaneous evenings sitting around with people who may have arrived as strangers but quickly become your closest friends.

You'll also share the property with other international travellers visiting Tanzania, creating the fun, multicultural atmosphere that great hostels are known for.

At the same time, there is space to slow down. Grab your laptop and catch up on Academy work, find a quiet corner with a book, call home, relax outside or simply have an early night.

    Your Home Between Adventures

The property is based in Njiro, Arusha, with shops, restaurants, cafés, a supermarket, gym and other everyday amenities nearby, while Arusha's city centre is easily accessible.

After placement days, Academy workshops, safari, waterfall hikes, cultural experiences and weekends exploring Tanzania, you'll always have somewhere familiar to come back to.

Over six or twelve weeks, you'll get to know the team, develop your own routines, make friends and genuinely settle in.

It's not just where you stay during the Academy. It's your home in Tanzania — and a huge part of the experience itself.

    Aliments & Boissons

Your program includes breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday, plus breakfast and dinner on Sundays. Meals are served at your Academy home base or provided as part of the itinerary when you're away on scheduled trips and experiences.

    🍳 Breakfast

Start the day with breakfast before heading to your placement. Breakfast varies but may include eggs, toast, pancakes, fresh fruit, cereals, tea, coffee and other breakfast options.

    🥗 Lunch

Lunch is included Monday–Saturday. Depending on the day's schedule, you'll either eat at your home base or arrangements will be made around Academy activities, placements and excursions.

Sunday lunch is left open, giving you the chance to head out for brunch or lunch with friends and explore some of Arusha's cafés and restaurants.

    🍛 Dinner

Dinner brings everyone back together and is one of the most social parts of life at the Academy.

Meals include a mixture of Tanzanian, international and familiar home-style dishes, giving you the opportunity to experience local food while still having plenty of variety throughout a longer stay.

You might find dishes such as rice, curries, grilled meats, vegetables, pasta, potatoes, chapati, beans and other Tanzanian favourites on the menu, with meals changing regularly. With a Pizza oven too, Woodfire Pizza is always a highlight!

🌍 Food Is Part of the Experience

Living in Tanzania also means trying what people actually eat here.

Alongside your everyday meals, the Academy includes food and cultural experiences throughout the program. You may learn to prepare Tanzanian dishes during a cooking session, try local food while exploring Mto wa Mbu, experience coffee from farm to cup in the Kilimanjaro region, or discover something completely new while travelling with your cohort.

We encourage you to be adventurous — food is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to experience another culture.

    🥤 Drinks & Dietary Requirements

Drinking water is available at your Academy home base, while tea and coffee are available.

Specific dietary needs before arrival so our team can confirm what can be accommodated.

And because you'll be living in Arusha rather than staying inside an isolated campus, you're also free to explore. There are plenty of cafés, restaurants, local eateries and nightlife around the city for the days when you feel like heading somewhere different with friends.
