This programme is a powerful opportunity for international volunteers to positively impact the lives of women and girls residing in vulnerable communities across the Alajuela Province of Costa Rica, specifically focusing on the areas of San Ramón and Naranjo. Volunteers collaborate with established local non-profit organizations and shelters dedicated to providing protection, care, and long-term support to beneficiaries who often face complex challenges, including economic barriers, social exclusion, and recovery from trauma or violence.
The mission is deeply rooted in fostering quality education, promoting gender equality, and achieving autonomous economic growth. By participating, you become a crucial element in a sustained effort to build resilient futures for these extraordinary women and girls. Your role is highly diverse and hands-on, encompassing a broad spectrum of activities designed to address both immediate needs and long-term empowerment.
Core Empowerment Activities
Your primary activities revolve around education and skills transfer. You will be instrumental in designing, developing, and leading various workshops aimed at both personal and professional growth. This includes, but is not limited to, teaching entrepreneurship skills, focusing on income generation, basic financial literacy, and simple business management strategies, thereby providing tangible tools for participants to achieve economic self-sufficiency.
Beyond vocational skills, you will actively contribute to educational support by offering English language classes and literacy assistance. Improving linguistic and academic competencies is vital for enhancing the beneficiaries' future social and professional integration, opening doors to better employment opportunities. Furthermore, volunteers play an important role in psychosocial support, organizing domestic violence prevention workshops, and fostering emotional well-being through safe group discussions and dynamics. This work requires immense cultural sensitivity and empathy to ensure a respectful and supportive environment for those dealing with difficult histories.
Comprehensive Well-being and Inclusion
The programme adopts a holistic approach to well-being. Volunteers organize and lead recreational and comprehensive health activities, such as yoga classes, sports, and group dynamics. These activities are essential for promoting physical and mental health, offering healthy outlets, and building strong, supportive peer networks among the participants.
A key objective of this work is reducing systemic inequalities and closing the social gaps faced by women in excluded situations. By concentrating efforts on education (SDG 4), gender equality (SDG 5), decent work (SDG 8), and reduced inequalities (SDG 10), the project ensures that your volunteer work contributes directly to internationally recognized sustainable development goals. You will also be supporting safe spaces that actively protect fundamental rights against injustice and violence (SDG 16).
Mutual Expectations and Preparation
What we expect from you: Working with vulnerable populations requires a high degree of emotional maturity, discretion, and empathy. We expect volunteers to maintain strict confidentiality regarding the beneficiaries' stories and identities. Proactivity is key; we look for individuals who can take initiative in planning workshops and who approach every interaction with patience and a non-judgmental attitude. A basic to intermediate level of Spanish is highly recommended to build trust and communicate effectively with the women and girls.
What you can expect from us: In return, we provide a structured and supportive environment. You will receive a comprehensive orientation upon arrival to understand the cultural context and the specific protocols of the shelters. Our local coordinator is available to provide guidance, ensure your safety, and facilitate your integration into the team, ensuring you never feel alone in handling the challenges of the role.
Equipment and Gear: Volunteers do not need specialized medical or industrial equipment. However, we highly recommend bringing a laptop or tablet to help design and present workshop materials. Bringing creative supplies (art materials, educational games) or resources for teaching English can also be very beneficial. In terms of attire, we ask volunteers to bring modest, comfortable clothing suitable for a professional yet active environment, respecting the local cultural norms of the centers.
A Transformative Experience
This collaboration offers volunteers an enriching environment where they can apply their skills—whether in teaching, social work, or counseling—while gaining unparalleled experience in international development and social justice. The structured work rhythm ensures productivity, while the daily interaction with local staff and beneficiaries provides continuous learning. By accepting this challenge, you join a dedicated network committed to creating lasting, positive change in the heart of Costa Rica.
