    À propos du programme

As a volunteer teaching English in Zanzibar, you’ll help students develop skills that can shape their long-term opportunities. Regular practice with fluent English speakers can accelerate progress and build confidence, an advantage that matters for further study and future employment. This program gives international volunteers the chance to teach, connect with the local community, and contribute to meaningful, lasting change. You’ll also strengthen your leadership and communication skills while supporting children in Paje.

    BACKGROUND TO THE TEACHING PROGRAM
In the early 2000s, the governments of Tanzania and Zanzibar expanded access to education by reducing primary school fees, leading to major increases in enrolment. Today, around 96% of primary-school-age children attend school. However, larger class sizes have followed, with an average of roughly 53 pupils per teacher, often higher in rural areas. At the same time, funding pressures have raised concerns about education quality, particularly in Zanzibar.

Teaching approaches in Zanzibar can be heavily exam-focused, with repetition used to memorise content rather than build understanding. This is especially challenging for English, since many secondary school subjects are taught in English. By supporting more interactive learning and consistent practice, volunteers can help students improve comprehension and strengthen the foundations needed for future success.

With more than a quarter of Zanzibar’s population living below the national poverty line, education remains one of the strongest pathways to improved prospects. Tourism is a fast-growing sector on the islands, and English fluency can significantly increase a young person’s chances of accessing stable, meaningful work.

This volunteer teaching program supports local schools and childcare centres by adding extra classroom support where it is needed most. Volunteers typically help teach English, Maths, and other subjects, while sharing skills and cultural perspectives. No previous teaching experience is required. Initiative, creativity, and enthusiasm are what matter. Local staff help you settle in and provide guidance so you can contribute effectively while gaining valuable experience.

Support is mainly focused on primary schools, with secondary school placements sometimes available on request. Some childcare projects also include nursery classes, where volunteers may assist with early-years learning and basic English.

    TEACHING VOLUNTEER PLACEMENT EXAMPLES
Paje Primary School – A short walk from the volunteer house, this school teaches around 120 students aged 8–14. Students follow the national curriculum and are grouped by age. Volunteers provide extra English support to strengthen learning and help prepare students for future opportunities. Founded in 2019, the school continues to grow with support from partner organisations.

Pendo High School – Established as a high school for students aged 12+, it has expanded to include multiple departments, allowing enrolment from kindergarten through graduation. Ongoing exposure to English from a young age can help students build stronger language skills and confidence over time, supporting future pathways in tourism and beyond.

As a volunteer, you’ll bring an open mind and a practical, creative approach, especially when planning lessons that keep students engaged and motivated. Your support helps local teachers, enriches classroom learning, and gives students more opportunities to practise English in a meaningful way.

Many students make the most progress when they can learn with fluent English speakers, improving both ability and future options. Volunteers interested in education-related careers also gain practical experience that can strengthen their profile.

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN TEACHING CHILDREN IN TANZANIA
Experience – No teaching background is required. Consistent exposure to a fluent English speaker is highly valuable, and volunteers who are resourceful and proactive can make a real contribution.

TEFL Course – To prepare well and maximise your impact, consider completing an internationally accredited 60-hour online TEFL course before you travel.

Return Airport Transfer – Return airport transfers are not included in the program fee, but the local team can help arrange onward travel to the airport or your next destination. Organising this locally allows flexibility if plans change, and costs can often be shared with other participants. Public transport and tuk-tuks are not recommended for airport transfers due to convenience and safety.

Resources – Classroom resources may be limited. Volunteers are encouraged to bring simple materials each day to support activities and engagement. Planning ahead will help you get the most from your placement.

Project Locations – Teaching and childcare placements may be at the same site, allowing volunteers to travel together. Childcare volunteers usually support preschool-aged children, while teaching volunteers work with older students, with different daily activities.

Schools supported by volunteers are privately run, as local legislation restricts volunteering in government-funded schools.

Yellow Fever – Yellow fever vaccination requirements have been updated. It is legally required for travellers arriving from, or transiting (12+ hours) through, countries with yellow fever risk. Even so, some travellers outside these criteria have been asked for proof on arrival. To avoid complications, it may be wise to get vaccinated in advance and plan ahead for timing.

Mandatory ZIC Insurance – Visitors to Zanzibar are required to purchase separate insurance through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) for the duration of their stay. This must be arranged before travel, or entry may be refused.

Weekends – Your project runs Monday to Friday, with weekends free. You can unwind at the volunteer accommodation or use the time to explore and travel. For ideas, check the Weekend Travel Guide for inspiration on how to spend your days off.

    Journée typique

YOUR VOLUNTEER ROLE & TYPICAL TEACHING DAY

As an English teaching volunteer in Zanzibar, you will plan and deliver lessons, often taking the lead in the classroom. While you may sometimes support local teachers, international volunteers are generally expected to guide lessons independently. Creativity, initiative, and adaptability are essential, and there may be occasions where you assist local staff as needed.

Lessons are delivered in English, with the exception of Swahili classes. Schools follow a basic curriculum, but volunteers are encouraged to introduce fresh ideas and engaging topics. Spending one to two hours each day preparing lessons will help ensure confident, well-structured teaching.

Although schedules can vary slightly, volunteers typically work from 8:30am to 1pm, Monday to Friday. Most days involve 3–4 hours of English teaching, alongside helping with activities or mealtimes. Volunteers are usually welcome to stay longer at the project if they wish.

As staff shortages are common, flexibility is important. Even those new to teaching often gain confidence quickly, especially with good preparation, which makes lessons more effective and enjoyable.

Transport to placements is not included. Some schools are within walking distance, while others require a short tuk-tuk journey of up to 25 minutes. The local team can help arrange transport, explain routes and costs, and offer guidance during orientation to ensure you travel confidently and safely.

Transfert de l'aéroport Zanzibar International Airport

For your volunteer experience in Zanzibar, flights should be booked to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), with arrival scheduled for the designated Sunday start date. This official arrival day helps ensure a smooth and well-coordinated start to the program.

On arrival, you will be met at the airport by a member of the local team or a designated driver, easily identifiable with a sign displaying your name. You will then be transferred to your accommodation, where you can spend the remainder of the day settling in, resting, and getting ready for the days ahead.

    Logement

During your time on the Zanzibar volunteer program, you will stay in a shared Volunteer House located in Paje, a growing coastal town where the volunteer projects are based. The house is set in a quiet neighbourhood, with restaurants, supermarkets, and ATMs all within easy walking distance.

Volunteers share the accommodation with other international participants. The house is spacious, simple, and comfortable, offering a friendly communal environment. Free Wi-Fi is available, though connectivity can be unreliable at times, and a local SIM card is provided for use with an unlocked phone. Communal areas offer space to relax in the evenings, and facilities include a refrigerator, access to filtered drinking water, and nearby laundry services. Some volunteers also choose to hand-wash their clothes.

For security, a night guard is on duty at the house. Volunteers are advised to bring a small padlock for personal use, and valuables can be stored securely with the local team. Power cuts are relatively common but are usually brief.

The atmosphere is welcoming and social, making it easy to connect with fellow volunteers. Many placements are within walking distance, while others require a short drive. Transport options and logistics are explained during orientation.

    Shared Option – Standard Accommodation
Dorm-style rooms are separated by gender, with up to eight volunteers per room. Bed linen, lockers, and mosquito nets are provided. Bathrooms are shared and include Western-style toilets and showers, with hot water available whenever possible.

Comfort Option – Private Room Upgrade (USD 150 per week)
For added privacy, a private room upgrade is available. Rooms are suitable for solo travellers or two participants travelling together and include two single beds and a private en-suite bathroom with a Western-style toilet and shower. Bed linen, lockers, and mosquito nets are provided, with hot water available whenever possible.

    Aliments & Boissons

Volunteers are provided with breakfast and dinner prepared on-site by the local cook, featuring a mix of local and Western-style dishes. Lunch is not included and can be enjoyed at nearby restaurants, beach cafés, or by purchasing supplies from local shops to prepare your own meals at the Volunteer House.

Meals follow a rotating weekly menu to offer variety. Dinner portions are shared evenly to ensure fairness, and filtered drinking water is available at the house. Bottled water can also be purchased locally if preferred.

Dietary requirements can often be accommodated, though this cannot be guaranteed. Volunteers with specific needs may need to buy additional ingredients at their own cost. Any dietary requirements should be noted in your application and discussed again with the local team upon arrival. If you have serious dietary concerns, it is recommended to seek clarification before confirming your placement.
