    Over het programma

Girls’ Menstrual Health Education & School Support Program Tanzania

Many girls in Tanzania face significant challenges in accessing education due to menstrual poverty, limited reproductive health knowledge, social stigma, and lack of access to menstrual hygiene products. These barriers often cause girls to miss school during their menstrual cycles, affecting their academic performance, confidence, and future opportunities.

The Girls Empowerment & Menstrual Health Volunteer Program aims to support adolescent girls through menstrual health education, life skills development, mentorship, and community awareness activities. Our goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where girls can learn, grow, and continue their education with confidence and dignity.

Volunteers work alongside our local team to support educational workshops, awareness campaigns, and mentorship sessions for girls in schools and communities. Activities may include assisting with menstrual health and hygiene education, helping organize girls' empowerment events, participating in sanitary pad distribution programs, supporting life skills training, and promoting gender equality through community outreach activities.

The program also encourages community engagement by involving boys, parents, teachers, and local leaders in discussions that help reduce stigma surrounding menstruation and support girls' education. By increasing awareness and access to information, we help create a more inclusive environment where girls feel respected and empowered.

Volunteers will work with local staff, teachers, community leaders, and young girls from different social and economic backgrounds. No professional experience is required, but volunteers should be open-minded, respectful, compassionate, and willing to learn about different cultures and community challenges.

The project is based in Arusha, Tanzania, a vibrant city surrounded by beautiful landscapes, cultural experiences, and access to some of Tanzania’s most famous national parks. Volunteers have the opportunity to engage with local communities while experiencing Tanzanian culture and daily life.

Through this program, volunteers contribute to improving girls' wellbeing, confidence, education, and future opportunities while gaining valuable experience in community development, youth empowerment, and social impact work.

Typical Day – Outreach Program (Thursday & Friday)

Girls’ Menstrual Health Education & School Support Program Tanzania

takes place every Thursday and Friday in local schools and surrounding communities in Arusha, Tanzania. These outreach days are designed to directly engage with students, teachers, and community members to promote menstrual health education, girls’ empowerment, and school retention.

The day begins in the morning at our base, where volunteers gather with local staff for a short briefing and preparation session. During this time, activities are reviewed, materials are prepared, and volunteers are assigned roles for the day. Transportation is then organized to the selected school or community location.

Upon arrival at the school, volunteers are welcomed by school teachers and administration staff. The program starts with an interactive session led jointly by our team and teachers, focusing on menstrual health education, reproductive health awareness, and breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation. Teachers play an important role in supporting discussions and ensuring students feel comfortable and engaged.

After the group session, students are divided into smaller interactive groups where volunteers support discussions with girls about personal hygiene, confidence building, staying in school during menstrual cycles, and overcoming social challenges. Boys are also included in separate sensitization sessions to promote respect, understanding, and gender equality.

Teachers and community leaders are actively involved throughout the sessions, sharing their perspectives on challenges affecting girls’ education, including absenteeism, lack of menstrual products, early pregnancy risks, and cultural stigma. This collaborative approach helps strengthen the connection between schools, families, and the community.

In the afternoon, the program continues with practical activities such as sanitary pad demonstrations, life skills training, mentorship discussions, and open Q&A sessions. Volunteers also support awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging parents and community members to prioritize girls’ education and wellbeing.

The day ends with a short reflection session between volunteers and staff, where experiences are shared and key lessons are discussed. Afterward, the team returns to the accommodation.

This outreach program provides a powerful opportunity for volunteers to directly engage with schools, support teachers, and contribute to meaningful change in girls’ lives through education, awareness, and community collaboration.
