A Different Kind of Gap Year in Tanzania

This isn't a traditional volunteer placement. It's a 6 or 12-week all-inclusive international Academy combining a Childcare & Early Education internship, accredited Level 3 qualification, Global Citizenship education, international flights, safari, travel across Tanzania and cohort-based gap year life.

Think study abroad, internship, gap year and African adventure — built into one structured experience.

Based in Arusha, northern Tanzania, you'll live alongside an international Academy cohort while working consistently within a locally managed early childhood education centre, supporting Tanzanian educators and children approximately 2–6 years old.

Your placement is combined with structured learning, cultural immersion, personal development and a collaborative Legacy Project — while your wider Academy experience takes you beyond Arusha through safari, mountains, waterfalls, cultural experiences, weekly adventures, major overland travel and Zanzibar.

And when we say all-inclusive, we mean it. International flights from Europe, accommodation, meals, visa, placement, Diploma, scheduled Academy activities, safari, overland travel and in-country support are built into your program fee.

Alongside your experience, you'll complete the academic requirements of the relevant Level 3 Diploma in Global Citizenship in Community Development, giving you an accredited outcome alongside substantial international practical experience.

    The Early Years Matter

The first years of childhood lay foundations that can influence learning, communication, confidence, relationships and development long after a child leaves the classroom.

That's why this internship focuses on early childhood education rather than simply childcare.

You'll work alongside Tanzanian educators supporting young children through play, early literacy and numeracy, English, storytelling, creativity, music, movement, sports and social learning.

These grassroots centres provide safe, nurturing early education for local children while also allowing parents and caregivers to work, study and support their households.

For many children, it's their first experience of structured education and an important environment for developing communication, independence, friendships and the foundations of literacy and numeracy.

    Good Intentions Aren't Enough

Working with young children in another country isn't simply about arriving with enthusiasm and wanting to help.

Children need consistency, safeguarding and locally appropriate education — and local teachers should remain at the centre of their learning.

That's why Boresha Global Academy doesn't simply send you into a classroom each morning.

Your internship is combined with structured Global Citizenship education, helping you explore ethical volunteering, safeguarding, cultural perspectives, education, sustainability, capacity building and community-led development.

You'll learn to question assumptions, understand local context and recognise that something considered “normal” within your own education system may not automatically be appropriate somewhere else.

We see ethical volunteering as a partnership: choosing a responsible organisation matters, but so does how you show up within it.

The goal isn't to arrive believing you know how Tanzanian children should be taught. It's to listen, learn from local educators and contribute where your skills and perspective are genuinely useful.

Your Childcare & Early Education Placement

Your weekdays are centred around a consistent placement within a locally managed early childhood education centre in Arusha.

Local educators work hard to create engaging learning environments, often with larger classes and fewer resources than participants may be accustomed to at home.

Your role is to provide additional support rather than replace the teachers already leading the classroom.

Depending on the day, you might support early literacy and numeracy, English, storytelling, songs, arts and crafts, sensory activities, creative play, movement, sports, outdoor games or small-group learning.

You'll also explore how play-based and inquiry-led learning can complement existing classroom practices, while learning how activities can be adapted using affordable, locally available resources.

No two mornings will be exactly the same — and that's part of working with young children.

Become Part of the Classroom, Rather Than Passing Through It

One of the biggest advantages of the Academy is consistency.

You're not spending a handful of mornings at a school before moving on.

Initially, your priority is to learn. You'll observe how the classroom operates, understand routines, meet the educators and children and begin understanding the local education context.

As the weeks progress, your role develops naturally.

You'll become increasingly confident supporting activities, working with smaller groups, preparing learning experiences and contributing ideas alongside local teachers.

You'll begin recognising individual children's personalities and learning styles and develop a much stronger understanding of both the strengths and challenges within your placement.

That consistency allows you to move beyond surface-level volunteering and become a genuinely useful additional member of the classroom.

Global Citizenship in the Real World

Your placement is only one part of what you're learning.

Throughout the Academy, you'll participate in practical Global Citizenship sessions exploring the bigger questions surrounding international volunteering and development.

What does ethical volunteering actually mean? Why can well-intentioned projects sometimes cause unintended problems? What's the difference between addressing a symptom and understanding its root cause? How do culture, economics and access to opportunity influence communities? What is capacity building? And how can international participants contribute without taking over?

    These aren't traditional classroom lectures.

Something you notice at placement might become part of a discussion that afternoon. A workshop may cause you to reconsider something you interpreted completely differently during your first week.

That's where the real learning happens: learning something, experiencing it, questioning it and taking that understanding back into the real world.

    Leave Behind Something Useful

As your understanding develops, you'll work collaboratively towards one of the most important components of the Academy: your Legacy Project.

Rather than deciding before arriving what a Tanzanian childcare centre needs, you'll spend time speaking with educators, observing the classroom and understanding their priorities.

Your project might involve literacy or numeracy activities, reusable phonics resources, play-based activity cards, sensory activities, learning stations, outdoor games or teacher-friendly activity guides using affordable local materials.

You'll develop your idea, trial it where appropriate, receive feedback, adapt it and create a practical handover.

The purpose isn't to produce something that simply looks impressive.

It's to create something realistic, culturally relevant, sustainable and genuinely useful to the educators who continue the work after you leave.

Personal Growth Is Part of the Journey

The Academy isn't only about what you contribute. It's also about what happens to you when you spend 6 or 12 weeks building a life somewhere completely different from home.

For some participants, this will be their first significant experience travelling independently or living abroad.

Weekly personal growth, self-awareness and reflection sessions give you space to process that journey.

Through workshops, discussions and your Global Impact Journal, you'll explore confidence, independence, identity, values, resilience, communication, leadership, relationships, assumptions, cultural adjustment and future direction.

You won't simply finish having experienced a lot.

You'll be encouraged to understand what those experiences actually taught you.

    Learn From Tanzania

Cultural immersion is woven throughout the Academy.

You'll learn practical Swahili, experience Tanzanian food and cooking, participate in cultural workshops and learn from local professionals, community partners and guest speakers.

But some of the most important cultural learning happens naturally.

It happens when you start using Swahili words without thinking. When you know your way around Arusha. When something at placement that confused you in Week 1 suddenly makes sense. When you make a cultural mistake and learn from it.

Over time, Tanzania starts feeling less like somewhere you're visiting and more like somewhere you're actually living.

    Experience Tanzania While You're Here

And while the Academy has genuine educational and community-development foundations, we haven't forgotten something important:

You're spending your gap year in Tanzania.

Arusha places you at the heart of northern Tanzania, surrounded by safari country, Mount Meru, Kilimanjaro, waterfalls, coffee-growing regions, lakes and cultural communities.

Regular Adventure Days may include waterfall hikes, coffee country, cultural experiences, cycling, Lake Manyara, canoeing, hot springs, local food and adventures around Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro.

And some of the biggest experiences happen on the road.

Both the 6 and 12-week Academies include major travel beyond Arusha, including safari and overland adventures through Tanzania.

The 6-week Academy combines northern Tanzania with safari, the Usambara Mountains and an overland journey towards the Swahili Coast and Zanzibar, bringing tropical beaches, the Indian Ocean and Swahili coastal culture into your experience.

The 12-week Academy gives you even more time to explore, including an extended journey through Ngorongoro and the Serengeti towards Mwanza and Lake Victoria, alongside the wider Academy travel program.

You don't have to choose between doing something meaningful and having the adventure you imagined when you decided to take a gap year.

The two are intentionally built together.

    Live the Experience Together

Academy participants join on set intake dates, meaning you'll arrive and progress through the experience alongside your cohort rather than constantly meeting people who are arriving and leaving.

You'll live together at our comfortable Academy home in Arusha, while participants complete different internship pathways across community development, health, animal welfare and other fields.

You'll come together for workshops, cultural activities, shared meals, games and movie nights, Thursday socials, Adventure Days, road trips and plenty of spontaneous plans.

    And you'll still have independence.

Free time is built into the program, particularly on Friday afternoons and Sundays, giving you time to explore Arusha, meet friends, relax or organise your own activities.

    Finish With More Than Memories

Alongside everything you're experiencing in Tanzania, you'll complete the academic requirements of your Level 3 Diploma in Global Citizenship in Community Development.

You'll also develop practical skills in early childhood education, teaching and facilitation, play-based learning, cross-cultural communication, teamwork, adaptability, leadership, critical thinking, community engagement and responsible international practice.

For participants considering early childhood education, teaching, psychology, occupational therapy, speech pathology, social work, community services, international development or related fields, the internship provides particularly relevant international exposure.

But you don't need to have your future figured out before you arrive.

That's part of what a gap year can be for.

It's not just an internship. It's not just a qualification. And it's definitely not just a holiday.

It's 6 or 12 weeks of living, learning, contributing and travelling in Tanzania — giving you the adventure of a gap year, practical Early Childhood Education experience and the future value of an accredited Global Citizenship qualification.

    A Typical Day

Life at Boresha Global Academy follows a consistent weekly rhythm, combining your internship placement with Global Citizenship learning, culture, personal development, social life and adventure.

    Mornings | Your Placement

Weekdays begin with breakfast at your Academy home base before heading to your early childhood education placement.

You'll spend the morning working alongside Tanzanian educators and children aged approximately 2–6. Depending on the day, you might assist with lessons, support small groups with letters or numbers, read stories, organise creative activities, lead games and movement, or provide extra one-to-one encouragement.

Your role develops throughout the program. Initially, you'll focus on learning routines, meeting the teachers and children and understanding how the centre operates. As your confidence grows, you'll become increasingly involved in activities and small-group learning.

Later in the program, placement time will also contribute towards your Legacy Project, developed collaboratively around something your placement identifies as genuinely useful.

    Tuesday | Global Citizenship

After placement, Tuesday afternoons focus on Global Citizenship and ethical international engagement.

Through interactive workshops, discussions and case studies, you'll explore topics such as ethical volunteering, cultural perspectives, root causes, sustainability, capacity building and community-led development.

These sessions connect directly with what you're experiencing at placement, helping you look beyond first impressions and better understand the complex factors influencing the communities you're working alongside.

    Wednesday | Culture & Connection

After placement, Wednesday afternoons are more experiential.

Depending on the week, you might have a Swahili lesson, Tanzanian cooking class, Maasai cultural experience, traditional art, music or dance workshop, local guest speaker or another cultural activity.

It's a fun way to learn more about Tanzania while becoming increasingly comfortable in the country you're calling home.

Thursday | Personal Growth + Social Night

After placement, Thursday turns the focus towards personal development.

Your Personal Growth and Global Impact Journal sessions explore topics such as confidence, identity, values, independence, resilience, leadership, communication and cultural adjustment, while giving you time to reflect on everything you're experiencing.

Thursday evening brings everyone together for a relaxed cohort debrief before our regular social night. Some weeks we'll organise something at home; other weeks the group heads out together in Arusha.

Friday | Placement + Free Afternoon

Friday is generally another placement morning, with some flexibility depending on your placement and program requirements.

Your afternoon is free. Explore Arusha, grab lunch with friends, relax at home, head to the gym or pool, or simply enjoy some downtime before the weekend.

    Saturday | Adventure Day

Saturday is usually Adventure Day, when Tanzania itself becomes part of your education.

Across the program, you'll experience northern Tanzania through waterfall hikes, coffee country, local villages, cultural experiences, hot springs, cycling, local food and adventures around Mount Meru, Kilimanjaro and Lake Manyara.

Some weekends become bigger adventures. Your program includes an unforgettable northern Tanzania safari, and during the 12-week Academy you'll also travel with your cohort to Zanzibar for a taste of Swahili coastal culture and island life.

    Sunday | Reset

Sunday is yours. Sleep in, explore Arusha, go for brunch, spend time with friends, call home, catch up on your journal or simply relax.

    More Than a Weekly Schedule

Although the weekly rhythm stays familiar, your experience develops considerably over time.

The classroom that feels unfamiliar in Week 1 looks very different by Week 8. You'll know the teachers and children, understand more Swahili, find your way around Arusha and gradually take greater responsibility at placement.

And between all of that there'll be safari, waterfalls, road trips, dinners, party nights, new foods, cultural experiences, inside jokes and spontaneous adventures with your Academy cohort.

That's what the experience is really about: not simply visiting Tanzania, but having enough time to live here, learn from it, contribute meaningfully and have an incredible adventure along the way.

Travel Is Built Into the Experience

One of the things that makes Boresha Global Academy different from a traditional internship is that travel isn't something you have to organise around your program — it's built into it.

Your Academy fee includes a calendar of Adventure Days, cultural experiences, safari and major overland travel across Tanzania. We want you to finish your program feeling like you've genuinely experienced the country, not simply travelled between your accommodation and placement each day.

    Saturday Adventure Days

Most Saturdays are Adventure Days, when you'll head out with your Academy cohort to explore northern Tanzania.

Across the program, experiences may include Mount Meru waterfall hikes, Moshi and Kilimanjaro, coffee country and Chagga culture, Maasai experiences, cycling through Mto wa Mbu and banana plantations, Lake Manyara, canoeing, natural hot springs, local food and markets, Cultural Heritage and Arusha National Park.

Your exact itinerary may vary with season, weather and local conditions, but regular Adventure Days are included throughout the Academy.

    Safari, Overland Travel & Zanzibar

Some of the biggest adventures happen on the road.

Both the 6 and 12-week Academies include major travel beyond Arusha, giving you the opportunity to experience completely different sides of Tanzania as part of your program.

On the 6-Week Academy, you'll combine your northern Tanzania experience with safari, the Usambara Mountains and an overland journey towards the Swahili Coast and Zanzibar. You'll swap Arusha and safari country for tropical island life, beaches, ocean adventures and Swahili culture before returning to your Academy home.

The 12-Week Flagship Academy gives you even more time to explore. Alongside your Zanzibar overland adventure, you'll experience an extended safari journey through Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, continuing towards Mwanza and the shores of Lake Victoria.

It's not simply a weekend safari added onto an internship. Travel across Tanzania is intentionally woven into the Academy experience.

Culture, Social Life & Free Time

The experiences continue during the week too. Depending on the schedule, afternoons may include Swahili, Tanzanian cooking, local art, music, dance and cultural workshops.

Back at your Academy home, expect games and movie nights, shared dinners, Thursday social and party nights, and plenty of spontaneous plans with the people you're living alongside.

Sundays are generally yours. Sleep in, relax, explore Arusha, meet friends or plan an extra adventure.

Your scheduled Adventure Days, safari, overland journeys and organised Academy cultural experiences are included in your program fee. Anything you independently organise during your personal free time is at your own expense.

The idea is simple: come to Tanzania for your internship, learning and qualification — but leave feeling like you've actually travelled, lived and adventured through Tanzania too.

You bring your spending money. We take care of the rest.

Henting fra flyplassen på Kilimanjaro International Airport

Because your international flights are arranged as part of the Academy program, we'll know exactly when to expect you.

When you land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a member of our local team will be waiting to greet you and welcome you to Tanzania. From there, your airport transfer is fully arranged, taking you directly to your Academy home base in Arusha where you can settle in, meet the team and begin getting to know your new home.

After a long international journey, there's no need to worry about navigating transport, arranging taxis or working out where to go — we'll be there from the moment you arrive.

    Overnatting

For the duration of your program, The White House of Tanzania becomes your home in Arusha — a comfortable, social and welcoming base where you'll live alongside your Academy cohort and meet travellers from around the world.

This isn't basic student accommodation. Academy participants stay in comfortable twin or double rooms with their own private bathroom, quality beds, linen, towels, storage and modern amenities. You'll also have Wi-Fi throughout the property, regular housekeeping and full private security, giving you a comfortable and secure place to settle into life in Tanzania.

    More Than Somewhere to Sleep

The White House has been welcoming international travellers to Arusha for more than a decade and was created around the idea of being a home away from home. There are plenty of spaces to find your own favourite spot, whether you want to socialise, study, relax or simply switch off after a busy day.

Around the property you'll find large outdoor hangout areas, gardens, comfortable lounges, a bar and restaurant, pool table, board games, sports and games areas, a movie thetre and social spaces, with plenty of room for the whole cohort to come together.

Meals are served at home too, with breakfast, lunch and dinner included Monday–Saturday and breakfast and dinner on Sundays, making shared meals another part of everyday Academy life.

The Social Side of Academy Life

Your home base is also where much of the fun happens.

Expect games nights, movie nights, dinners, sports, themed events, drinks, Thursday social and party nights, plus plenty of spontaneous evenings sitting around with people who may have arrived as strangers but quickly become your closest friends.

You'll also share the property with other international travellers visiting Tanzania, creating the fun, multicultural atmosphere that great hostels are known for.

At the same time, there is space to slow down. Grab your laptop and catch up on Academy work, find a quiet corner with a book, call home, relax outside or simply have an early night.

    Your Home Between Adventures

The property is based in Njiro, Arusha, with shops, restaurants, cafés, a supermarket, gym and other everyday amenities nearby, while Arusha's city centre is easily accessible.

After placement days, Academy workshops, safari, waterfall hikes, cultural experiences and weekends exploring Tanzania, you'll always have somewhere familiar to come back to.

Over six or twelve weeks, you'll get to know the team, develop your own routines, make friends and genuinely settle in.

It's not just where you stay during the Academy. It's your home in Tanzania — and a huge part of the experience itself.

    Mat og drikke

Your program includes breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday, plus breakfast and dinner on Sundays. Meals are served at your Academy home base or provided as part of the itinerary when you're away on scheduled trips and experiences.

    🍳 Breakfast

Start the day with breakfast before heading to your placement. Breakfast varies but may include eggs, toast, pancakes, fresh fruit, cereals, tea, coffee and other breakfast options.

    🥗 Lunch

Lunch is included Monday–Saturday. Depending on the day's schedule, you'll either eat at your home base or arrangements will be made around Academy activities, placements and excursions.

Sunday lunch is left open, giving you the chance to head out for brunch or lunch with friends and explore some of Arusha's cafés and restaurants.

    🍛 Dinner

Dinner brings everyone back together and is one of the most social parts of life at the Academy.

Meals include a mixture of Tanzanian, international and familiar home-style dishes, giving you the opportunity to experience local food while still having plenty of variety throughout a longer stay.

You might find dishes such as rice, curries, grilled meats, vegetables, pasta, potatoes, chapati, beans and other Tanzanian favourites on the menu, with meals changing regularly. With a Pizza oven too, Woodfire Pizza is always a highlight!

🌍 Food Is Part of the Experience

Living in Tanzania also means trying what people actually eat here.

Alongside your everyday meals, the Academy includes food and cultural experiences throughout the program. You may learn to prepare Tanzanian dishes during a cooking session, try local food while exploring Mto wa Mbu, experience coffee from farm to cup in the Kilimanjaro region, or discover something completely new while travelling with your cohort.

We encourage you to be adventurous — food is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to experience another culture.

    🥤 Drinks & Dietary Requirements

Drinking water is available at your Academy home base, while tea and coffee are available.

Specific dietary needs before arrival so our team can confirm what can be accommodated.

And because you'll be living in Arusha rather than staying inside an isolated campus, you're also free to explore. There are plenty of cafés, restaurants, local eateries and nightlife around the city for the days when you feel like heading somewhere different with friends.

Although every week brings something different, the Academy follows a consistent rhythm designed to balance meaningful practical experience with learning, personal growth, travel and plenty of time to enjoy life in Tanzania.

    Monday – Placement
Begin the week at your chosen internship placement, working consistently alongside our Tanzanian partner organisation and gradually building your skills, relationships and understanding.

Tuesday – Placement + Global Citizenship
After your placement, come together for a practical Global Citizenship session exploring topics such as ethical volunteering, sustainable development, culture, root causes, capacity building and responsible international engagement.

    Wednesday – Placement + Culture & Connection
Continue your placement before a more interactive afternoon. Depending on the week, this could include Swahili, Tanzanian cooking, art, cultural workshops, guest speakers, traditional experiences or other activities.

Thursday – Placement + Personal Growth
Thursday combines your placement with self-development, reflection and your Global Impact Journal. Explore confidence, identity, values, resilience, leadership and how living abroad is changing your perspective. Thursday evening is also our regular debrief and social night — and often party night!

Friday – Placement + Free Afternoon
Friday is generally another placement day, followed by a free afternoon to relax, explore Arusha, spend time with friends or simply enjoy your home base. Depending on your placement and program week, there may also be flexibility to take Friday off.

    Saturday – Adventure Day
Saturday is for experiencing Tanzania. Across your program, included adventures may take you hiking to waterfalls, cycling through villages and banana plantations, exploring coffee country, learning from local communities, visiting hot springs or heading into the landscapes surrounding Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.

Your program also includes one of Tanzania's ultimate experiences — a two-day safari through the northern safari circuit.

    Sunday – Reset Day
Sundays are generally free. Sleep in, explore, catch up with friends, relax by the pool or simply reset before another week begins.

    More Than an Internship

Your time in Tanzania is designed to build progressively. You'll begin by settling into your new environment and learning to understand your placement and Tanzanian context before moving more deeply into Global Citizenship, ethical engagement and meaningful contribution.

Participants on the longer Flagship Academy have additional time to develop their placement relationships, explore complex development issues and work collaboratively towards a Legacy Project identified alongside their local partner.

Throughout both programs, you'll share the experience with your Academy cohort — living together, learning together and making the most of Tanzania through social nights, dinners, games, cultural experiences, weekend adventures and plenty of spontaneous moments in between.

Please note: Because these programs follow a structured curriculum and group itinerary, participants must join one of the advertised intake dates rather than selecting individual arrival dates or program durations. Places are limited for each cohort.
