    Make a meaningful difference by supporting education initiatives in Nairobi, Kenya’s vibrant capital city. Nairobi is a dynamic urban center where modern city life blends with strong community values, offering volunteers the opportunity to contribute to grassroots education while experiencing daily life in local neighborhoods.

    You will support local students by assisting teachers, helping deliver lessons, and providing additional classroom support in schools that often face limited resources. This fully hosted experience allows you to contribute to educational development while gaining cultural insight into life in one of East Africa’s most diverse cities.

    Your Role and Impact: The primary goal of this project is to improve learning outcomes and increase access to quality education for children from low income communities. Many schools in Nairobi operate with large class sizes and limited teaching materials. Volunteers play an important role in easing these challenges by offering extra support, encouraging student participation, and helping create more engaging and supportive learning environments.

    As a Teaching volunteer in Nairobi, your duties will be varied, interactive, and rewarding:

    Classroom Support: Assisting local teachers with lessons in subjects such as English, mathematics, and general studies.

    • Student Engagement: Helping students with reading, writing, pronunciation, and basic numeracy through one on one or small group support.
    • Creative Learning: Leading songs, games, storytelling, and interactive activities that make lessons enjoyable and accessible.
    • School Assistance: Helping prepare teaching materials, organize classrooms, and support daily school routines.

    Volunteers work closely with local teachers, school staff, and fellow international volunteers. Local educators provide lesson guidance, classroom structure, and cultural context, while volunteers contribute energy, creativity, and additional attention that enhances the learning experience for students.

    No special equipment is required for this program. All teaching materials are provided by the schools. Volunteers may bring small teaching aids or stationery if they wish, but this is optional. Comfortable clothing suitable for a school environment is recommended.

    No previous teaching experience is required. Clear English communication, patience, and a positive attitude toward working with children are the most important qualities for volunteers on this project.

    Program Details and Accommodation: This fully hosted volunteer experience includes accommodation in a volunteer house in Nairobi with meals provided each day. Transport to and from school placements is arranged locally. Volunteers gain hands on classroom experience, connect with educators and volunteers from around the world, and spend weekends exploring Nairobi’s cultural sites, markets, and nearby nature reserves. Available year round, this program offers a supportive and impactful opportunity to contribute to education in Kenya’s capital city.

    • 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM: Support morning classes. Activities may include teaching basic English, assisting local teachers, leading pronunciation practice, organizing learning games, helping with reading and writing exercises, and supporting students in the classroom.
    • 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM: Lunch break.
    • 12:30 PM to 3:00 PM: Prepare lesson plans, create teaching materials, and plan activities for upcoming classes.
    • 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM: Free time to relax, socialize with other volunteers, or explore Nairobi.
    • 6:00 PM onwards: Dinner is served at the accommodation, followed by free time for personal activities.

    Weekends are free for travel, cultural activities, and exploration around Nairobi and nearby regions.

    • Arrival Day: Volunteers must arrive in Nairobi on the day before their program orientation begins.
    • Orientation Start: Program orientation begins on the first and 15th of each month.
    • Arrival Airport: Volunteers should book flights to arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.
    • Airport Pick up: Airport pick up is included in your Program Fee.
    • Arrival Process: Upon arrival, you will be met at the airport by a member of the local team and transferred to temporary volunteer accommodation near Nairobi for the night before orientation. After orientation, you will be taken to your homestay and introduced to your host family.
    • Accommodation Coverage: Your Program Fee includes accommodation from the night before orientation begins.
    • Alternative Pick up: Volunteers already in Nairobi prior to their program may arrange overland pick up from a pre arranged meeting point.
    • Departure: Return airport transfer at the end of your program is not included.
    • Under 18s: Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and provide parental consent documentation.

    Overnatting

    Volunteers stay with local host families in Nairobi, providing an immersive cultural experience and insight into everyday life in Kenya.

    • Bedrooms: Volunteers typically share a bedroom with two to four other volunteers of the same gender. Bedding is provided.
    • Comfort: Homestays are generally comfortable and include electricity and running water. Power outages and water shortages can occasionally occur.
    • Bathrooms: Most homestays have western style bathrooms, although facilities may vary depending on location.
    • Internet: WiFi may be available at some homestays but is not guaranteed. Many volunteers access the internet through local cafes or mobile data.
    • Security: Volunteers are advised to take standard precautions with personal belongings.

    • Lunch: Usually consists of vegetables, beans or lentils, rice, and occasional meat.

    • Dietary Needs: Dietary requirements should be communicated in advance so host families can prepare accordingly. Flexibility is encouraged.

    Start Dates:
    Programs start on the first and third Monday of each month and are available year round.

    Arrival and Orientation:

    • Designated Arrival Day: Sunday.
    • Arrival Airport: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi (NBO), Kenya.
    • Arrival Notes: Airport pick up is included as part of the fully hosted experience. Volunteers are met at the airport by a member of the local team and transferred to the volunteer accommodation in Nairobi.
    • Orientation: A 1 day Orientation is included and typically begins on your selected Monday start date. This session covers an introduction to local staff, Kenyan customs, safety guidelines, program expectations, and an overview of the volunteer placement.
