Every day along Kenya’s coast, thousands of women wake up with dreams—to feed their children, to educate their daughters, to build something of their own.
But poverty, lack of access to skills, and limited opportunities keep those dreams just out of reach.
This is where you come in.
As a Women’s Economic & Entrepreneurial Empowerment Assistant you are not just volunteering…
You are restoring dignity, igniting hope, and unlocking futures.
You will stand beside women who have been overlooked for far too long and help them rise by:
    1.  🌱 Teaching entrepreneurship and small business skills that create real income
    2. 💰 Guiding women in financial literacy, savings, and microfinance empowerment
    3. 💡 Helping transform simple ideas into sustainable businesses
    4. 🛍️ Supporting marketing, branding, and sales strategies for local products
    5. 📱 Introducing digital entrepreneurship skills (social media, mobile money, online selling)
    6. 🤝 Mentoring women to rediscover confidence, independence, and leadership
You can support any of these areas
    1. Mombasa – Where vibrant markets meet deep-rooted economic challenges
    2. Kilifi County– Where rural women are ready to rise with the right support
    3. Malindi– Where hope is waiting to be turned into opportunity
Between your life-changing work, you will experience:
    1. 🌊 Healing moments by the Indian Ocean’s calm, cooling breeze
    2. 🏝️ Cultural walks through Mombasa Old Town filled with history and soul
    3. 🍛 The warmth of **Swahili dishes**—rich, flavorful, and shared with love
    4. ☀️ Sunsets that remind you why purpose and humanity matter
You will arrive as a volunteer… and leave transformed. Because of you:
    1. A mother starts her first business
    2. A girl stays in school because her family can now afford it
    3. A woman gains the courage to say, *“I can provide. I can lead.
    4. A community begins to **break the cycle of poverty
As you get ready to embark on your volunteer journey in Kenya, we kindly ask you to familiarize yourself with the following essential guidelines.
    1. Kenyan Currency, Mobile Phones, and Internet Access
    • Having a mobile phone will enable you to stay in touch with your family and friends. Local SIM cards are available, with Safaricom being the predominant provider. A SIM card can be purchased for approximately 1 US Dollar, offering competitive rates. The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling, and you can exchange money at malls or withdraw cash from ATMs. U.S. dollars are accepted for entrance fees at National Parks.
    • Acquiring a local SIM card enables you to access M-Pesa, a popular and user-friendly mobile payment platform in Kenya. This facilitates seamless transactions, whether in markets, for transport fares, or even in remote villages across Kenya, eliminating the need to carry cash. This is particularly beneficial as taxi drivers often claim they lack change and may retain excess amounts. With M-Pesa, you can pay the exact fare required, unless you choose to provide a tip. Additionally, you can top up your M-Pesa account using services such as Wise.
    • Internet access is available via Wi-Fi in accommodations, workplaces, and public areas such as cafes and shopping centers. Alternatively, modem sticks for laptops can be purchased for additional connectivity options.
    2. Packing Essentials (Required items):
    • eTA-Visa, which can be obtained via this link (https://www.etakenya.go.ke/de/evisa)
    • Passport (ensure it is valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry),
    • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate,
    • credit card and/or cash,
    • power adapter for local outlets.
    • Recommended items: personal toiletries, travel pillow, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, durable footwear or shoes suitable for outdoor use, fanny pack, compact power bank, hairdryer, and clothing suitable for the weather (check the forecast before your arrival, as conditions may vary from your departure location). Laundry services are available for an additional fee.
    3. What can you expect on your first day with UCESCO
    • Upon your arrival, a member of the UCESCO team, either Kingsley or another representative, will meet you at the airport, and communication will be facilitated via WhatsApp. Your orientation is scheduled for the first weekday at the UCESCO office located in Tudor, Makupa Roundabout. If you arrive during the weekend, we can arrange a brief city tour or a one- to two-day safari; however, your first visit to the project will occur on Monday. The Mombasa Brunch Manager will introduce you to the organization and its various initiatives, so feel free to ask her any questions you may have. You will have the opportunity to tour the School and other projects, with the day concluding around 2 PM. Following this, you may choose to visit the mall to acquire a SIM card (a passport is required) and set up an M-Pesa account.
    4. Exploration Opportunities (Tours and Safaris)
    • UCESCO-AFRICA invites you to delve into the vibrant lifestyle and culture of Kenya. If you are interested in safaris or travel experiences, our affiliated company, Meaningful Tours and Travel, provides budget-friendly safari options, hotel bookings, flight arrangements, and travel insurance.

For trips outside Mombasa, such as to Masai Mara or Samburu, we recommend a minimum stay of two nights and three days (Friday to Sunday) to fully enjoy the experience. In contrast, safaris within or close to Mombasa can be completed in one or two days, typically over the weekend. N/B
There can occasionally be delays with luggage. We have observed that some volunteers have experienced significant waits for their bags, sometimes up to three days. To prepare for such situations, we recommend that you pack essential items and a few clothes to change for 2 - 3 days in your carry-on bag. While luggage delays are not common, they can occur, and we want to help you avoid any unnecessary expenses, such as having to purchase clothing while waiting for your luggage.

    Boende

At UCESCO Africa, we believe that where you stay is an important part of your volunteer experience. Our volunteer accommodation is designed to provide a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment where you can relax, connect, and feel at home.

Volunteers stay in a cozy, shared volunteer house located within a friendly and secure community. The house offers a warm, family-like atmosphere, giving you the opportunity to build meaningful connections with fellow volunteers from around the world.

Rooms are shared (typically 2–4 people per room with your own bed) and are furnished with comfortable beds, clean bedding, and secure storage for your belongings. Separate arrangements can be made for couples, families, or those requesting additional privacy.

    The house includes:

    • Clean shared bathrooms with running water
    • A comfortable common lounge area for relaxing and socializing
    • Access to Wi-Fi
    • Laundry services or facilities

Above all, our accommodation is more than just a place to stay — it’s a space where friendships are formed, stories are shared, and your volunteer journey truly comes to life.

Favored in Mombasa, bodabodas are quick, versatile, and can navigate through traffic easily. They are perfect for short trips. Helmets are typically provided. Cost: KES 50–300 (approximately $0.40–$2.00), depending on distance and negotiation
    • Tip: Always confirm the fare before starting the ride and wear warm clothing if traveling in the evening.
    • 2. Uber / Bolt (Ride-Hailing Apps)
Dependable and comfortable. Perfect for visitors who are not familiar with the city. GPS tracking and payment options are accessible through the app. Recommended for volunteers, particularly at night or in unfamiliar areas. Cost: KES 500–900 (approximately $4–$6 USD) within city limits. Safer, especially for longer distances or solo travel.

Tuk-tuks are particularly prevalent in Mombasa. They are slower but cost-effective and can transport 3–4 people at once. Primarily used for short local trips in designated zones.
