    Om programmet

The Turtle Protection Project in the Parismina community, south of Tortuguero National Park, was founded in 2018 to make protecting sea turtles their life's work. The organization's goal is to protect the turtles in the long term, support local people, and educate future generations about protecting our natural resources. The project's mission is to protect turtle nests on a 5km long beach, known as Playa 3. Three species mainly come ashore there: green turtles, leatherbacks, and hawksbills. The illegal theft of eggs and the capture of adult green sea turtles for their meat or shells are the biggest threats to these animals. This is exactly what the staff and volunteers are fighting against.

In addition, the organization is active through a research project and is present on the beach to prevent poaching. In the long term, members of the local community will be involved in conservation efforts and will also provide a sustainable source of income that is not dependent on egg collection and hunting of adult sea turtles.

The main goal of the project is to increase the population of marine turtles by increasing the hatching success rate. Regular patrols on the beach are intended to keep poachers and predators away from the eggs, which works very well. In addition to human poachers, free-roaming dogs are a major threat to the turtles. Street dogs smell the eggs through the sand and eat them.

Injured turtles are also sometimes found that have been harmed by fishing nets, plastic waste, bycatch or other animals. The project provides help and tries to provide the turtles with medical care so that they can return to the sea. This is intended to extend the lifespan of the adult turtles.

Another important part of the organization is conducting research. They collect data and conduct studies to contribute to scientific knowledge and to make politicians aware of the importance of protection.

Be part of the team and join the night patrol to protect the sea turtles or gather important data for scientific studies to study behaviour and how the ecosystem of the turtles can be supported on the long run. Even though you will work closely with the local team, no prior Spanish skills are required, as the team can communicate in English. For your participation, you don't need any specific skills or equipment - just lots of love and passion for the different turtle species to be found!

The region around the Tortuguero National Park is very isolated, especially since it can only be reached by boat from the capital, San José. But the region is becoming increasingly popular and eco-tourism. There you can admire the rich biodiversity, secluded beaches and beautiful mangrove forests.

As part of this unique nature conservation project, you can help in many ways to combat environmental destruction. There are varied tasks, you live in the middle of nature and work with a great team. Sounds good? Then become a volunteer at Turtle Protection in Parismina!

    Typisk dag

Do you want to make a difference together with the team of researchers and volunteers? Are you motivated to work for the environment and protect the animals, even at night or in bad weather? Then this great nature conservation project is just right for you! There are many tasks that you can support as volunteer.

Engage in nighttime beach patrols to gather data on sea turtle nesting activities, while also helping to prevent poaching through your presence. Each patrol lasts between 4 and 5 hours, with the first patrol starting at 20:00 (8:00 p.m.) and the second at 00:00 (12:00 a.m.). The main objective of these patrols is to monitor and record information on female sea turtles as they nest within the research area. During the nesting season, the team attaches identification tags to the turtles' flippers, measures the dimensions of their shells, and performs a visual inspection of each turtle encountered. To ensure minimal disturbance to the turtles, data collection begins only after the turtles have laid their eggs and begun covering their nests. The team also relocates nests that are at risk of being washed away by tides and, for one selected turtle per night, counts the eggs and marks the nest.

    Key tasks include:

    • Identifying sea turtle species
    • Taking measurements
    • Tagging turtles for identification
    • Counting eggs
    • Preparing nests and relocating eggs if necessary
    • Recording data in the field log

Conduct early morning surveys to count sea turtle tracks and nests, assess nest conditions, and inventory hatched nests to evaluate hatching success. Morning surveys commence at 05:00 (5:00 a.m.). The primary goal is to track and count the sea turtle nests and identify the species that nested in the research area the previous night. The team completes a roundtrip walk along the nesting beach, covering approximately 10 km. They identify the species associated with each set of fresh tracks, determine if a nest was successfully made, and check for signs of poaching. During hatchling season, the team also looks for evidence of recently hatched nests, excavates them, and inventories the contents to assess hatching success. This process also allows for the rescue and release of any hatchlings that may be trapped in the nests.

    Key tasks include:

    • Identifying sea turtle species based on tracks
    • Distinguishing between nests and false crawls (unsuccessful nesting attempts)
    • Searching for signs of hatching
    • Conducting nest excavations

During these activities, you will spend significant time walking in nature, offering the opportunity to explore the diverse flora and fauna of the region.

The data collected is intended to increase knowledge about turtle species in order to then be able to develop suitable protection strategies. Research is extremely important in order to understand the effects of climate change and other factors on turtles and to be able to counteract negative effects. This is the only way to bring about change, together with politicians and local schools and universities. Here you have the chance as a volunteer to work directly with the researchers and make an important contribution to knowledge about turtles. You are not only involved in collecting data, but you can also see the exciting results and analyses.

You can also be there when the baby turtles hatch and find their way to the sea. You help to provide them with a safe route and can watch as they begin their life in the sea. A wonderful experience that will stay with you forever!

The time during the day is used to do the housework in the camp. Everyone helps out with cooking and cleaning, so there is time to relax and catch up on sleep.

Additionally, participate in community outreach and environmental education programs with local school children (depending on the length of your stay). Enjoy your free time exploring the stunning tropical biodiversity and the wild Caribbean coast of Costa Rica.

The turtle project is located in the small Caribbean village of Parismina in the famous Tortuguero region of Costa Rica. The village, which can only be reached by water taxi, is located right next to the Tortuguero National Park and is just a boat ride from the town of Tortuguero. Around 600 people live in the remote region, but the friendly Ticos make your stay something very special and you have a lot of contact with the warm locals. Immerse yourself in the magnificent biodiversity of this place and be fascinated by the dense jungle, rivers, mangroves and natural beaches. Tortuguero is located in the heart of the southern Caribbean part of Costa Rica, embedded in dense jungle with a tropical, humid and rainy climate. Unlike the rest of the country, it rains here all year round, but this results in a lush green landscape. It is advisable to always bring a rain jacket and rubber boots. The daytime temperatures are between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius, while at night it is around 25 degrees. The cuisine of the Caribbean region differs not only in ambience and climate, but also in taste. Here, dishes are often seasoned more sharply and refined with plenty of coconut milk. A culinary must is the typical Caribbean dish “Rice and Beans” with fish.

You can enjoy your free time exploring the incredible nature, swimming in the sea, walking on the beach, exploring the mangroves by boat or kayak, joining a football match with the locals and relaxing in the tropical warm climate.

    Oplysninger ved ankomst

Volunteers can participate from February until the end of November, and the program can start every Saturday. There is a so-called "turtle season" during which female turtles come to the beach to hatch their nests. At the Caribbean coast the Leatherback turtles hatch from March to June, green turtles from June to November and Hawksbill turtles from April to October. There is no turtle season from December to March. Due to holidays, the project is closed from December to beginning of January. Please note that the minimum stay for volunteering is one week.

    How to get there

When you arrive at the airport in San José, we recommend you stay for one night in the city and take the bus on the next day early morning.

From San José you first take a public bus to Siquirres from the Caribeños bus station. This takes around 2 hours.  From there you take a second bus to Caño Blanco. On the last step of your journey, you have to take a boat to Parismina. There are several water taxis to bring you to Parismina, the trip lasts 15 minutes.
