Chronic underdevelopment in Uganda is complex. Remote rural living, the HIV/AIDS epidemic, a subsistence economy, and limited local services can leave families dependent on hand-outs, with higher rates of malnutrition and fewer education options. In many villages, there are limited ways to raise funds beyond subsistence living. That is why The Real Uganda builds long-term relationships with local communities to support sustainable solutions through start-up funds, shared knowledge, and steady motivation.
About the Program
Do you enjoy being outdoors and doing real, practical work? Want to see how climate change affects farming in the tropics? This program places you with Ugandan women's farming collectives, where your time and effort support food security and environmental sustainability.
What you will do
You will work side-by-side with Ugandan women farmers in collective gardens that promote:

efficient land use

soil conservation

income generation
Tasks depend on the season. You may help prepare soil, plant, weed, manage pests, or harvest crops. You will receive basic training and the tools you need when you arrive. If you have them, bring work gloves, a hat, and rubber boots. Expect to work in the sun.
Where you will live
You will stay in a private room in the family home of the host organization’s director, with meals included. Electricity can be intermittent, and there is no running water or indoor plumbing. The farms are a motorcycle ride away.
School connection and community time
Dive deeper into the women's communities. After gardening, you can share info about environmental conservation or farming practices and learn local handicrafts. You can also spend time in the local school with their kids. Academics, sports, arts and crafts, and cultural exchange activities are welcome!
Activities
Volunteer activities may include a mix of these seasonal tasks:
