    Voices for Animal Welfare (VfAW) invites aspiring photographers to join our Animal Photography Program in Tanzania. This unique initiative combines practical photography training, cultural immersion, and animal welfare advocacy. Participants learn to use visual storytelling as a tool for change, documenting real animal welfare situations, building empathy, and inspiring conservation action.

    Through hands-on workshops, guided fieldwork, and expert mentorship, you will gain technical skills, develop creative campaigns, and present your work in exhibitions and competitions. Along the way, you’ll connect with local communities, explore Tanzanian traditions, and contribute to global conversations on ethical animal welfare.


    Program Overview

    • Photography Training: Learn camera techniques, composition, editing, and ethical practices with professional photographers.

    • Fieldwork & Documentation: Capture authentic stories of farm animals, stray animals, and—when possible—wildlife, while engaging with local communities.

    • Visual Storytelling: Combine images with writing to raise awareness and advocate for better treatment of animals.

    • Exhibitions & Competitions: Share your work through curated showcases and photo contests judged by industry experts.

    • Cultural Immersion: Experience Tanzanian life, meet diverse communities, and learn about animal welfare.


    Your Role

    As a participant, you are also a volunteer and advocate. You will:
    • Document animal welfare realities through photos and stories.
    • Develop projects on farm animals, stray animals, and working animals.
    • Take part in editing, writing, and group storytelling workshops.
    • Engage with communities to raise awareness of animal welfare challenges.
    • Prepare and present your work in exhibitions.

    Professional Development

    • Photography Skills: Advance in photography, editing, and storytelling with Lightroom and Photoshop.

    Important Notes:

    • Visa Requirements: Participants must obtain an Ordinary Visa (valid for 90 days).
    • Insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance is required for the duration of the program.
    • Health and Safety: Rabies vaccination is mandatory.
    • Wildlife Expectations: Wildlife is not visible everywhere in Tanzania. This program focuses on documenting real animal welfare realities in both rural and urban settings, not staged encounters.
    • Mindset: It’s important to come with an open mind, a willingness to learn, and flexibility to adapt to different environments and cultural contexts.

    In addition, participants are also volunteers supporting the community. Activities may include:

    • Organising campaigns.

    • Promoting awareness about animal welfare through education and advocacy.

    Your day starts with a healthy vegan breakfast before heading out for fieldwork. Depending on the schedule, you might explore urban areas to photograph stray animals, visit farms to observe animal welfare conditions, or meet with local communities. Afternoons are often dedicated to editing your photos, writing reflections, and attending workshops or talks with animal welfare experts. Evenings are free to relax, cook and share meals with other volunteers, or discover the local area. Week by week, your skills grow as you build your final project for exhibition.

    In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

    While no professional photography background is required, having openness and flexibility to adapt to new environments, teamwork skills to live and work with other volunteers, and cultural sensitivity to respect local traditions will enrich your experience.

    Airport Pickup and Return Information

    Airport pickup and return transfers are included in the program fees to ensure a smooth arrival and departure experience for all participants.


    Arrival (Pickup):

    • Pickup Locations:
      • Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or
      • Arusha Airport (ARK).
    • Meeting Point:
      • Participants will be welcomed at the arrival hall by a designated driver or staff member holding a sign with their name or the organization’s name for easy identification.
    • Transport to Accommodation:
      • Private transport will be provided directly to the accomodation ensuring a comfortable and hassle-free start to the program.

    Departure (Return):

    • Return Transfers:
      • Transportation back to the airport at the end of the program is also included in the fees.
    • Flexible Scheduling:
      • Transfers will be arranged based on individual flight schedules to ensure participants arrive at the airport on time for their departures.

    Important Notes:

    • Flight Details Submission:
      • Participants must provide their flight details (arrival and departure times, airline, and flight numbers) at least two weeks before arrival for proper arrangements.
    • Emergency Contact:
      • An emergency contact number will be provided for any last-minute changes or updates.
    • Late Arrivals and Early Departures:
      • Pickup and return services are available for late-night or early-morning flights at no extra cost.

    Accommodation

    Volunteers are hosted in a comfortable shared house arranged by our NGO. Each participant has a private bedroom furnished with a queen bed, wardrobe, and mosquito net. The bathroom is shared with another volunteer.

    The house is equipped with:

    • Wi-Fi

    • Washing machine

    • Furnished kitchen for self-catering

    • Living and dining space for relaxing and sharing meals

    A simple vegan breakfast (bread/chapati, fruit, tea/coffee) is provided daily. Volunteers can cook together using the fully equipped kitchen—including an oven and microwave. We recommend sharing grocery costs with the team. Eating out in Arusha is also affordable; the accommodation is close to the city center, where you’ll find a wide range of budget-friendly restaurants.

    • Orientation: Covers program structure, Tanzanian culture and customs, basic Swahili phrases, health and safety tips, and local transport.

    • Mentorship: Before arrival, participants receive guidance on flights, visas, packing, and trip preparation.
