Volunteering at our Bali Wildlife Rescue Centre offers a rare opportunity to work closely with more than 40 endangered primates and birds while gaining hands-on experience in animal care and wildlife conservation. No previous experience or qualifications are required—just a willingness to learn and a passion for protecting wildlife.
Many of the animals in our care are survivors of illegal trafficking, poaching, or the exotic pet trade. They’ve been rescued from markets, private homes, or businesses where they were kept in poor conditions. Our dedicated local team provides rehabilitation and long-term care, with the ultimate goal of releasing as many animals as possible back into their natural habitats.
The centre currently houses a wide range of species, including leaf monkeys, macaques, a sun bear, eagles, crocodiles, gibbons, and peacocks. Sadly, some animals are too injured, too old, or too accustomed to humans to survive in the wild and will remain at the centre permanently. For those that can be released, rehabilitation takes time, patience, and suitable release sites—of which there are very few in Indonesia.
Located on the outskirts of Tabanan in central Bali, our centre is one of only seven licensed wildlife rescue facilities in the entire country.
Volunteering:
As a volunteer, you’ll help with daily feeding, preparing enrichment activities, and cleaning and maintaining enclosures. Occasionally, volunteers may assist with observing animal behaviour, but animal handling is strictly prohibited for safety and welfare reasons. Volunteers typically work alongside our staff for three to five hours each day.
A typical day starts early at 6am with food preparation and feeding, followed by breakfast. From 8–9am, volunteers help clean the enclosures, and from 10am–noon, they assist with gardening or maintenance tasks. After lunch, the final hour (1–2pm) is dedicated to enrichment activities to keep the animals mentally and physically stimulated. The remainder of the afternoon and evening are free for you to relax or explore the area.
Volunteers should be physically fit enough to work outdoors in Bali’s tropical climate and have up-to-date recommended vaccinations before joining the program.
Due to the nature of the work and the need for consistency in animal care, volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum stay of one week and a maximum of three weeks.
Location:Tabanan, in central-west Bali, is known for its lush rice terraces, traditional villages, and peaceful rural atmosphere. Less touristy than southern Bali, it offers an authentic glimpse of local life surrounded by natural beauty. Highlights include the famous Tanah Lot Temple and the UNESCO-listed Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, making it a great spot for those seeking culture, scenery, and tranquility.
