Make a meaningful contribution to children’s lives while experiencing everyday life in Guatemala by volunteering with grassroots organisations in and around Quetzaltenango (Xela). This four-week volunteer programme places participants in community-based after-school programmes that support children from underprivileged backgrounds, offering a balance of cultural exchange, practical contribution, and personal growth. 🇬🇹

The organisations we work with support children who may be affected by economic hardship, limited educational opportunities, and unstable home environments. Volunteers play an important role in complementing the work of local Spanish-speaking staff by providing additional attention, encouragement, and support. By simply showing up consistently and engaging with the children, volunteers help create a safe, positive, and motivating environment.

Volunteer involvement focuses on educational and recreational activities such as helping with homework, organising games, and supporting learning through play. Volunteers can also design and facilitate workshops based on their own interests and skills - for example arts and crafts, music, sports, storytelling, life skills, or creative projects; subject to approval by the organisation. In addition to working directly with children, volunteers may contribute to institutional strengthening, assisting with areas such as communications, social media, donor outreach, or basic administrative support, helping organisations build their long-term capacity.

The organisations we partner with are small, grassroots initiatives that are deeply connected to the communities they serve. This close community connection is one of the greatest strengths of the programme, allowing volunteers to experience authentic local projects and build meaningful relationships. At the same time, these organisations can be underfunded and understaffed, and volunteers should be prepared for a degree of informality and occasional disorganisation. While this can feel overwhelming at first, it is also where volunteers are most needed, and where their contribution is often most appreciated.

Volunteers are supported by a programme coordinator based in Quetzaltenango, who provides orientation, induction, and ongoing guidance throughout the placement. However, the coordinator is not present at the organisation on a day-to-day basis. Each organisation has its own local coordinator or staff members who manage daily activities and provide direction at the project level.

All volunteer placements accept participants with any level of Spanish, including complete beginners. To support cultural integration and communication, the programme includes 20 hours of one-to-one Spanish lessons with experienced local teachers. While Spanish is not a requirement, volunteers generally find that the more Spanish they speak, the easier daily life becomes and the more rewarding their interactions with children, staff, and community members are.

Projects are located in and around Quetzaltenango (Xela). Volunteers typically travel to their placements by local bus or taxi. Local buses take approximately 20 minutes each way and cost around Q3 per trip (less than USD $0.50). Taxis cost approximately Q25 each way (around USD $4). Transportation is affordable and easy to navigate with guidance provided during orientation.

This programme is well suited to volunteers who are flexible, proactive, and open to working in dynamic community environments, and who are motivated by meaningful engagement rather than perfectly structured settings.
