    About the program

The Children Therapy & Care Program is a community-based initiative that supports children with special needs and developmental challenges in Arusha, Tanzania. The program works with children aged 0–12 years from different social and economic backgrounds, providing them with essential care, learning support, and developmental assistance.

Many of the children we support experience delays or disabilities caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, ADHD, spina bifida, hydrocephalus, muscular disorders, and speech or developmental delays. Our approach focuses on improving their independence, communication, mobility, and overall quality of life through structured therapy support and daily care activities.
The program offers a combination of physiotherapy support, occupational therapy activities, speech and communication exercises, and play-based learning designed to stimulate development in a safe and friendly environment. We also aim to expand our services in the future to include additional rehabilitation approaches such as hydrotherapy when resources allow.

We believe that every child deserves access to care regardless of their family’s financial situation. For this reason, we work closely with families to ensure children can continue receiving support even when they are unable to pay full costs, and we are developing long-term sponsorship opportunities for vulnerable cases.
Volunteers play an important role in supporting our team by assisting in daily activities, engaging children in learning and play, and helping create a positive and inclusive environment. We welcome volunteers and trainees from different backgrounds, especially those interested in child care, education, therapy support, and social work. No professional experience is required, but a willingness to learn, work in a team, and respect local staff knowledge is highly valued.

    Typical day

A typical day in the Children Therapy & Care Program is structured but flexible, depending on the needs and energy levels of the children. The day begins in the morning when children arrive at the centre and are welcomed into a safe and friendly environment. Volunteers support staff in greeting the children, helping them settle, and preparing for the day’s activities.

The morning sessions often include therapy support activities such as guided exercises, mobility assistance, speech and communication practice, and simple developmental tasks. Volunteers may also take part in one-on-one interaction with children who need extra attention, always working under the guidance of local professionals.

Midday usually includes play-based learning activities where children engage in creative play, music, drawing, storytelling, and group interaction. This helps improve their social skills, confidence, and emotional development. Volunteers are encouraged to actively participate, motivate the children, and create a joyful learning atmosphere.

After lunch and rest time, the afternoon is often dedicated to lighter activities such as outdoor play, sensory stimulation exercises, and supportive care routines. This is also a time for bonding, where volunteers spend quality time with the children in a relaxed environment.

The day ends with calming activities, preparation for departure, and ensuring each child is safely handed over to their guardians. Volunteers then join a short reflection with staff, sharing experiences and learning from the day’s activities.
Throughout the day, volunteers are fully supervised and guided, ensuring both the safety of the children and a meaningful learning experience for everyone involved.

    Free-time activities

During free time, volunteers have the opportunity to relax, explore, and experience the local culture of Arusha while enjoying a balanced and meaningful stay. After program activities, volunteers can spend their time resting at the accommodation, socializing with other volunteers, or reflecting on their daily experiences with the children.

For those interested in exploring, Arusha offers many beautiful and exciting places to visit such as local markets, cultural heritage centers, coffee shops, and viewpoints with stunning views of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro. Volunteers may also choose to visit nearby attractions, go on short weekend trips, or join cultural experiences such as traditional food tasting and local community visits.

In addition, free time can be used for personal activities such as journaling, reading, photography, or preparing creative ideas for activities with the children. Some volunteers also enjoy light sports, walking around the neighborhood, or simply relaxing at the hostel.

We encourage volunteers to use their free time in a way that helps them recharge, learn more about the local culture, and create a meaningful and enjoyable experience during their stay in Tanzania.

We offer airport pickup services to make your arrival in Tanzania smooth and stress-free. Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport, a member of our team or a trusted driver will be waiting for you with a sign displaying your name.

From the airport, you will be safely transferred directly to your volunteer accommodation in Arusha. The journey is comfortable and gives you your first introduction to the beautiful surroundings of northern Tanzania.

To ensure proper arrangements, volunteers are required to share their flight details in advance, including arrival date, time, and flight number. This allows us to plan your pickup efficiently and avoid any delays.

In case of any flight changes or delays, our team is available to adjust the pickup schedule accordingly. We recommend arriving during daylight hours when possible for a smoother transfer experience.

Our goal is to ensure you feel welcomed, safe, and supported from the very moment you land in Tanzania.

    Accommodation

Volunteers are accommodated in a safe, clean, and comfortable shared volunteer house located in Arusha, close to the Children Therapy & Care Program. The accommodation is designed to create a friendly and social environment where volunteers from different countries can live together, share experiences, and support each other during their stay.

The house is fully furnished and includes shared bedrooms, common living areas, bathrooms, and a kitchen where volunteers can prepare simple meals or enjoy meals provided by the program. Basic amenities such as electricity, water, and internet access are available to ensure a comfortable stay.
The environment is peaceful and secure, allowing volunteers to relax after daily activities at the centre. Local shops, transport options, and essential services are within reachable distance, making it convenient for daily living.

Living at the volunteer house also provides a great opportunity to experience Tanzanian culture, interact with other volunteers, and feel part of a community while contributing to meaningful work with children.

Our goal is to ensure that volunteers feel at home, safe, and fully supported throughout their entire stay in Arusha.

    Food & Beverages

Volunteers are provided with simple, fresh, and locally prepared meals during their stay. Food is served in a shared setting at the volunteer accommodation, creating an opportunity to enjoy meals together and experience Tanzanian hospitality.

Breakfast is usually included daily and consists of light options such as tea or coffee, bread, eggs, fruits, and local snacks depending on availability. Lunch is typically provided on working days at or near the program site, and it is designed to give volunteers enough energy for daily activities with the children.
Dinner is prepared at the volunteer house and often includes staple Tanzanian dishes such as rice, ugali, beans, vegetables, chicken, or fish. Meals are balanced and can be adjusted to accommodate basic dietary preferences where possible.

Drinking water is provided or made available, and volunteers are encouraged to stay hydrated throughout the day, especially due to the warm climate in Arusha. Additional drinks such as soft drinks or special dietary items can be purchased locally at nearby shops.
We aim to ensure volunteers are well-fed, healthy, and comfortable so they can fully focus on their experience and work with the children.

    Details on arrival

The Children Therapy & Care Program is flexible and welcomes volunteers throughout the year. Start dates are available on a rolling basis, meaning you can begin the program on any agreed weekday depending on availability and your travel plans. We recommend arriving at least 1–2 days before your start date to allow time for settling in and orientation.

Upon arrival in Arusha, volunteers are welcomed by our local team and supported with airport pick-up arrangements (if pre-arranged). You will be taken to your accommodation where you can rest and get familiar with the surroundings. On your first day, a full orientation is provided covering the program overview, daily schedule, safety guidelines, introduction to the children, and a tour of the therapy centre.

During the orientation, volunteers are also introduced to the local staff team and given clear guidance on their roles and responsibilities. This ensures you feel confident and well-prepared before starting hands-on activities with the children.
We encourage all volunteers to be open-minded, flexible, and ready to adapt to the local environment and culture. Our team is always available to provide support throughout your stay to ensure a smooth and meaningful experience.
