    About the program

Sisters of the Soil is an immersive, grassroots initiative designed to bridge global skill-sharing with sustainable rural development. Recognizing that women are the foundational pillars of rural communities, this targeted one-week program pairs international volunteers directly with experienced local trainers. Operating strictly as supportive helpers, volunteers work alongside these local experts to deliver high-impact workshops to village women's groups. This collaborative approach ensures all training in leadership, hygiene, nutrition, and homestay management is culturally authentic, language-accessible, and community-driven, creating a lasting ripple effect that elevates the entire village.

    The One-Week Training Track

    1.Days 1 - 2: Foundation & Health Logistics:Orientation & Hygiene.

Assist the local trainer in launching the program with the village women's committee. Volunteers act as hands-on helpers to set up interactive demonstrations on sanitation, clean water management, and community hygiene protocols.

    2.Days 3 - 4: Culinary & Nutrition Workshops:Kitchen Optimization.

Support the local trainer during practical cooking sessions. Volunteers help prepare materials, organize cooking spaces, and assist in demonstrating food safety practices and nutritional optimization using local ingredients.

    3.Days 5 - 6: Hospitality & Homestay Simulation:Micro-Tourism Readiness.

Help facilitate workshops on eco-homestay management. Volunteers assist the primary trainer by role-playing as international guests, helping local families practice cross-cultural communication and room preparation.

    4.Day 7: Action Planning & Graduation:Sustainability Handover.

Aid the local trainer in conducting final leadership and financial literacy wrap-ups. Volunteers help distribute training certificates and assist the women's groups in mapping out their independent action plans.

    The Volunteer Helper Role

As a volunteer, your role is uniquely impactful because it focuses on supporting and amplifying local expertise. Working as a helper to a local trainer ensures that your efforts perfectly align with the community's actual needs, language, and cultural norms. You will be on the ground handling logistics, preparing workshop materials, offering secondary insights during activities, and engaging in deep cross-cultural exchange. It is a highly collaborative, fast-paced seven days of service that prioritizes local leadership while allowing you to contribute meaningfully to true women's empowerment and rural self-reliance.

A Typical Day on the Program

While rural life moves to its own natural rhythm, the training schedule follows a structured timeline to respect the participants' daily routines, giving you ample personal time outside of program hours.

    • Before 10:00 AM – Free Time & Village Mornings: Your mornings are entirely your own. You can use this quiet time to catch up on personal work, read, or enjoy the peaceful rural sunrise. It is a fantastic opportunity to take a morning stroll through the village, watch the community wake up, and interact casually with locals before the structured day begins.

    • 10:00 AM – Morning Training Kick-off: The program begins at the community center or designated village homestead. Working alongside the local trainer, you will help set up the space and prepare materials. The morning session focuses on core concepts, featuring interactive presentations and group discussions with the women's group. Your role is to actively assist the trainer, hand out resources, and help guide breakout activities.

    • 1:00 PM – Mid-Day Practical Sessions: The program shifts from theory to hands-on application. Depending on the day's focus, this time is spent in the kitchen practicing food safety, inside a home setting up a model guest room, or participating in leadership role-plays.

    • 2:00 PM – Community Snack Break: The group pauses for a well-deserved afternoon break. This is a wonderful opportunity to share local tea and traditional snacks with the participants and the trainer, serving as an informal space for deeper cross-cultural conversation and storytelling.

    • 2:30 PM – Afternoon Review & Action Planning: The training resumes with a focus on feedback and summarizing the day's lessons. Volunteers help the local trainer facilitate Q&A sessions and document the ideas generated by the women's group.

    • 4:00 PM – Daily Wrap-up & Free Evening: The formal training session concludes for the day, allowing the village women to return to their family routines. Your evening is completely free. You can tour around the village, hike to local viewpoints, photograph the scenery, or relax and unwind at your accommodation after a meaningful day of collaboration.

Free Time & Exploring the Region

Because this program focuses on authentic community needs, the exact training location shifts based on requests from different municipal women's groups across Nepal—ranging from the high mountain communities to the flat, sub-tropical plains of the Terai. The host organization carefully coordinates with local partners to place you where your assistance is needed most.

Consequently, your free time activities will naturally depend on the distinct geography, climate, and culture of your assigned project site.

    Discovering Lamjung

Most of our training cycles take place in the beautiful Lamjung district. Nestled in the mid-hills of central Nepal, Lamjung is a vibrant hub of Gurung and Tamang culture and serves as a spectacular backdrop for your off-hours exploration.

If your program is hosted here, your mornings and evenings are packed with diverse outdoor opportunities:

    • Abundant Hiking Trails: Lamjung is a paradise for walkers. You can spend your afternoons taking short, scenic hikes along terraced farmlands, walking to hidden rural waterfalls like Chamche or Syange, or climbing to panoramic viewpoints like Rainas Kot or Peace Hill.

    • Stunning Mountain Vistas: From almost anywhere in the district, you will be treated to sweeping, close-up views of the soaring Lamjung Himal, alongside the giant massifs of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges.

    • Model Heritage Villages: You will have the chance to wander through historic, beautifully preserved stone-and-slate villages like Ghale Gaun or Bhujung. These communities are famous for pioneering rural hospitality and offer a firsthand look at traditional traditional weaving, architecture, and daily Himalayan life.

No matter where your specific training week lands, you will have plenty of independent time to step away from the classroom, immerse yourself in nature, and experience the unparalleled warmth of rural Nepal.
