The Coral Ranger Program at One Ocean Empire is an intensive, hands-on marine conservation training experience designed for individuals who want to learn how coral reefs are restored and protected in the real world.

Our conservation centre is located on remote Usukan Island in Sabah, Borneo, where we have spent the past 9 years restoring degraded reefs through organic coral propagation methods. These reefs face increasing pressure from:

• Ocean warming and coral bleaching
• Human impact on coastal ecosystems
• Declining reef resilience and biodiversity
• Limited local access to marine conservation training

Rather than relying on artificial reef structures or large-scale interventions, our approach focuses on organic coral propagation, natural reef recovery, and long-term ecological monitoring.

The Coral Ranger Program allows participants to learn these techniques directly in the field, while contributing to an active reef restoration project.

This is not a classroom course. It is a practical training program embedded within a functioning conservation centre.

Participants will gain hands-on experience in coral propagation, reef ecology, marine monitoring, and responsible marine stewardship.

Guided by strict methodology and field-based conservation principles, Monica ensures every participant understands not just how to plant coral — but why each step matters.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

As a Coral Ranger participant, you may assist with the following activities:

• Participating in guided coral propagation dives or snorkel sessions (depending on weather)
• Assisting with coral fragment collection under supervision
• Planting coral using our organic system under supervision
• Observing coral growth and survival during monitoring sessions
• Assisting with reef surveys and ecological observations
• Learning safe water practices during conservation dives/snorkels
• Supporting basic reef maintenance activities (removing trash, etc..)

Activities are conducted under supervision of the conservation team to ensure safety and ecological responsibility.

⚠️ Not every activity happens every day. Conservation work depends on weather conditions, tides, reef conditions, and project priorities.

WHERE YOU'LL BE TRAINING

The Coral Ranger Program takes place at our conservation centre on Usukan Island, located along the northern coast of Sabah, Borneo.

The island environment includes:

• Coral reefs directly accessible from the centre
• Mangrove and coastal ecosystems
• Clear tropical waters with high marine biodiversity

Our conservation centre operates:

• Fully off-grid (solar energy)
• With rainwater harvesting systems
• Within a remote island environment

This setting allows Coral Rangers to experience reef conservation directly within the ecosystems they are helping restore.

WHO YOU'LL WORK WITH

During the program, you will interact with:

• Our local Sabah-based staff members at our Conservation Centre
• Community members and youth trainees involved in conservation programs (on some days)
• International volunteers and interns working at the centre

We operate as a collaborative team environment, where respect, safety, and responsibility are essential.

PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS:

This program is designed for individuals who are:

• Comfortable in ocean environments
• Willing to learn through hands-on field activities
• Respectful of marine ecosystems
• Able to follow safety instructions carefully
• Comfortable with simple, remote island living conditions

Marine conservation work depends heavily on:

• Weather conditions
• Ocean visibility
• Tides and currents
• Reef safety conditions

Because of this, some days may involve more water activities, while other days may focus on education, reef observation, or maintenance tasks. Flexibility and patience are important. The goal is to provide real exposure to how marine conservation work actually operates, not a scripted tourism experience.

WHAT TO BRING

Here is a list of items we recommend bringing for the Coral Ranger Program:

• Reef-Safe Sunscreen (Must Have) Reason: Protect your skin while ensuring no harmful chemicals enter the reef ecosystem.
• Swimwear (Must Have) Reason: Required for coral propagation dives or snorkel activities.
• Rash Guard / Long Sleeve Swim Shirt (Recommended) Reason: Protection from sun exposure during long hours in the water.
• Personal Mask & Snorkel (Optional) Reason: While we provide equipment, many participants prefer using their own.
• Water Bottle (Must Have) Reason: Staying hydrated while reducing plastic waste on the island.
• Power Bank (Optional) Reason: Electricity is solar powered and limited.
• Personal Towel (Optional) Reason: Useful after water activities or showers.
• Light Outdoor Clothing (Must Have) Reason: The island climate is tropical and warm year-round.
• Cash (Must Have) Reason: Remote island environment with limited payment facilities.
• Personal Snacks (Optional) Reason: If you prefer additional food between meals.
