    The project aims to keep children and young people active and away from gangs while making good use of their free time.

    As a volunteer you are involved in various day-to-day activities with the community and young people, as well as sharing, organising and implementing educational and recreational activities for children, youth, families and older adults.

    As a volunteer you are involved in various day-to-day activities with the community and young people, as well as sharing, organising and implementing educational and recreational activities for children, youth, families and older adults. 

    It is very important to adapt to Latin American culture. Their response times and schedules are not the same, and you will need to know Spanish, at least at a basic level, to communicate in a Spanish-speaking country. Your lack of adaptability in homes, projects, or culture will be reflected in your experience.

    The lack of opportunities causes many young people to become involved in delinquency, so it is necessary to offer them options that can be linked to music, sport or cultural activities.

    As a volunteer in sports volunteering you are expected to participate in the education and training of children and young people in the following cultural and sporting activities:

    • American football
    • Athletics
    • school reinforcement
    • Baseball
    • Dance
    • Swimming
    • Music

    They also carry out activities such as:

    • Basic classes to help them learn to read and write.
    • Activities with the elderly
    • Reinforcement for young people

    Typical day

    The activities of the different sports are carried out in sports facilities located in the area where the organisation is located in Cartagena.

    The sports volunteering programme runs from Monday to Friday.

    The activities of the different sports are carried out in sports facilities located in the area where the organisation is located in Cartagena.

    The sports volunteering programme runs from Monday to Friday.

    Training sessions are held regularly from 14:00 to 17:00, three times a week. Many children attend school and then attend the scheduled sports and cultural activities. In the course of the morning there are sports activities with children and older children in the school.

    Both the timetable and the activities may vary.

    Minimum Age: 18 years

    In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

    You need to speak English (basic level) or Spanish (intermediate level)

    Airport Pickup at Rafael Nunez International Airport

    You must arrive at Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG), where you will be picked up by the coordinator of the local organisation. Pick-up time is from 8:00 to 21:00 hours.

    cabs to and from the project each day are not included and cost about $50 per week.

    Accommodation

    All volunteers stay in hostels selected by the organisation. They are usually located in safe areas close to the walled city.
    Accommodation includes:

    Details on arrival

    The volunteer project is open all year round (except for national holidays and the holiday period from December to mid-January).

    Arrival days are Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays, to make it easier for you to join the project.
