    About the program

Elderly Care & Community Support Initiative

The Elderly Care & Community Support Initiative is a community-based program designed to improve the wellbeing, dignity, and quality of life of senior citizens living in vulnerable situations within Arusha, Tanzania. Many elderly people in the community face challenges such as loneliness, limited family support, poverty, and difficulties accessing social services. Through this initiative, we aim to provide companionship, emotional support, practical assistance, and community engagement opportunities that help elderly individuals feel valued and respected.

Volunteers play an important role in supporting our elderly care activities. Their responsibilities may include visiting elderly community members, spending time talking and listening to their life experiences, assisting with light household tasks, helping organize social activities, and participating in community outreach programs. Volunteers may also assist with health awareness campaigns, recreational activities, and intergenerational events that bring together young people and senior citizens.

The program takes place in and around Arusha, a vibrant city located near some of Tanzania’s most famous national parks and cultural attractions. Volunteers are accommodated in shared volunteer housing with access to basic amenities, meals, and local support. Community visits take place in nearby neighborhoods and villages where elderly individuals live.

Volunteers work closely with local staff, community leaders, caregivers, and members of Gilys Children Foundation. Together, we create a supportive environment that promotes respect, inclusion, and care for older members of society.

We welcome volunteers who are compassionate, patient, respectful, and willing to engage with people from different backgrounds. Previous experience in social work, healthcare, psychology, or community development is helpful but not required. A positive attitude and willingness to learn are the most important qualities. Volunteers should bring comfortable clothing suitable for community work and an open mind for cultural exchange.

In return, volunteers receive orientation, guidance from experienced staff, accommodation, meals, cultural immersion opportunities, and the chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of elderly people. Through this experience, volunteers gain valuable skills in communication, empathy, teamwork, and community development while contributing to a more caring and inclusive society.
