About the program

The project

This project aims to meet the increasing local demand for English literacy as English is not usually taught and the academic programs are limited only to Malagasy and French. You will have the opportunity to prepare and to teach a variety of English-based subjects to children at a local school which will allow you to experience the local lifestyle and academic system. You have the freedom to use your creativity in devising new teaching methods or be inspired by the educational system of your home country. You will have a general syllabus to follow and examples of what previous participants have used and you can enrich them with games, songs, art, sports and music.

Bring English as a global mode of communication to the children in the beautiful island of Nosy Be!

The location

Madagascar is a rich and colourful country which was separated from Africa by a cataclysmic earthquake. As a result, it was one of the last major landmasses on Earth to be colonized by humans and it has undergone different evolutionary processes allowing many life forms to change little if at all over the course of millions of years. When the first settlers arrived on the island they found plenty of food, barely any predators and a rich wildlife. The dense rainforests are still home to over 100 exotic species of animals found nowhere else on Earth including lemurs, dwarf hippos, giant tortoises, ten-feet tall elephant birds and many more. Settlers from Indonesia, Arab and Persian traders and migrants from Africa arrived at different times and avoided segregation, although they lived in tribes. Their coexistence and fusion have resulted in a beautiful and remarkably uniform society, a unique synthesis of race, language, religion, and traditions.

Free-time activities

The Nosy Be Archipelago is located off the north-west coast of Madagascar. It is a magnificent location with many islands and unique beaches offering stunning snorkelling and diving opportunities. Nosy Be is not overly touristic and rather relaxed with its sugar cane and vanilla plantations, rum distilleries, ylang ylang bushes and lounging lemurs. You can visit the colourful markets, take a boat journey to the islands, go for a hike in the tropical forests and explore the Malagasy culture. Many restaurants offer a variety of cuisines and are awaiting you for an exotic gastronomic experience. Nosy Be is a charming location worth discovering!
