    About the program

    Overview

Every day, more than 60 children come to Greenway School in Siem Reap for one of the two sessions offered. Eager to learn, they greatly value the support from those who assist in their educational journey. The school, designed and built by people like you, operates under our team’s guidance.

In November 2024, Greenway School Siem Reap opened its doors, providing free learning opportunities to children who otherwise might not afford it.

School Schedule: Local students attend public school for four hours a day, but these schools often lack comprehensive English education. Public school schedules are split into morning and afternoon shifts, allowing children to attend Greenway School during their free time. For example, students in the morning public school group can join the afternoon session at Greenway, and vice versa. Children willingly attend Greenway School and genuinely enjoy their time here.

Classes are conducted in traditional classroom settings, with an emphasis on creative lesson planning. Flexibility is encouraged, but it is important to stay within the established curriculum and class schedule.

Participants will work with local teachers and other volunteers, often in small teams of 3-5 people. This setup allows for personalized attention, including smaller group activities and one-on-one support for students who may struggle with the material. An orientation session will be held before you begin teaching, covering details such as class size, assignments, and your teaching team.

To ensure consistent learning, participants must follow the pace set by the school directors and adhere to the prescribed curriculum. Skipping ahead is not allowed, ensuring all material is covered thoroughly and preparing students for weekly progress evaluations and end-of-year assessments.

The children who attend Greenway School come from Krous village and five neighbouring villages. Their ages range from 6 to 13, with most having only a basic level of English. Our curriculum accommodates students from beginners to level 5, enabling steady progress.

Class Sizes and Equipment: Class sizes typically range from 10 to 30 students, and classrooms are equipped with basic teaching tools, such as whiteboards and flashcards. Volunteers are encouraged to bring small teaching materials or items to donate, as these greatly enhance the curriculum and learning experience.

Transportation: Transportation to and from the accommodation and school is primarily by bicycle.

Responsibilities: The focus of the teaching project may vary based on the school’s current needs. Your primary responsibilities will include:

    • Preparing English lesson plans
    • Teaching English
    • Administering monthly progress tests
    • Teaching basic hygiene and sanitation practices
    • Sharing your cultural background and experiences with the students
