    Through our Healthcare Internship & Clinical Placement Program, volunteers and interns gain practical experience by supporting healthcare services in Northern Tanzania. The program is organized by Gilys Children Foundation in collaboration with local hospitals, clinics, and community health initiatives in and around Arusha.

    We work closely with each participant to identify the most suitable placement based on their interests, educational background, qualifications, and level of experience. Placements may include hospitals, health centers, clinics, or community outreach programs.

    Participants can choose to:
    • Work in local hospitals and clinics
    • Support maternal and child healthcare services
    • Join community medical outreach activities in rural areas
    • Participate in health awareness and prevention campaigns

    Depending on the duration of stay, participants may combine more than one placement experience.

    Placement Opportunities

    Hospital & Clinic Placement

    Volunteers and interns may be placed in partner hospitals and clinics where they can observe and support healthcare professionals in different departments such as:

    Typically, a volunteer’s day starts around 7:00 am with breakfast at the volunteer house and preparation for the day’s activities. Around 8:00 am to 8:30 am, volunteers travel to their placement location using local transportation or arranged project transport depending on the placement site.

    From approximately 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, volunteers and interns participate in activities at hospitals, clinics, healthcare centers, or community outreach programs. Tasks may include observing medical staff, supporting healthcare teams, assisting with patient care where appropriate, participating in health education activities, or joining medical outreach services in local communities.

    Around 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, participants usually have a lunch break before continuing with afternoon activities if scheduled. Most placements finish between 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm, allowing volunteers free time to relax, prepare reports, explore the local area, or interact with other volunteers.

    Evenings are often spent sharing experiences with fellow volunteers, enjoying cultural exchange activities, preparing meals together, or participating in organized community activities. Weekends are generally free and provide opportunities for safaris, cultural tours, hiking, or exploring different parts of Tanzania.

    Airport Pickup at Kilimanjaro International Airport

    Airport Pickup & Arrival Information

    Airport pick-up is included in the program fees. Volunteers and interns can arrive at any time of the day or night, and a member of the Gilys Children Foundation team will be available to welcome and assist them upon arrival.

    Participants can arrive through:

    - Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
    - Arusha Airport (ARK)

    Our recommended arrival day is Thursday, while the recommended departure day is Wednesday. Participants are kindly advised to consider these days when booking their flights in order to attend orientation and settle comfortably before starting their placement.

    After arrival, participants will be transported safely to the volunteer accommodation in Arusha where they will receive further support and orientation from our local team.

    Food & Beverages


    Breakfast and dinner are provided from Monday to Friday and are included in the program fees. Breakfast usually includes tea or coffee, bread with spreads such as butter, jam, or peanut butter, together with local Tanzanian snacks and seasonal specialties.

    Dinner is freshly prepared by our local kitchen team and gives volunteers the opportunity to enjoy delicious traditional Tanzanian meals such as rice and beans, chapati, vegetables, ugali, pasta, potatoes, and other local dishes.

    During weekends, volunteers are welcome to use the shared kitchen facilities to prepare their own meals or explore the many local and international restaurants, cafés, and food markets in and around Arusha.

    Safe filtered drinking water is available at the accommodation for all volunteers, and kitchen refrigerators are accessible for storing personal food items.

    Vegetarian meal options are also available, and volunteers with special dietary requirements can inform the team in advance so that we can assist where possible.

    Our Healthcare Internship & Clinical Placement Program is available throughout the year, and participants can choose flexible start dates depending on availability and personal schedules.

    We recommend arriving in Tanzania on a Thursday, as orientation and project introductions are usually conducted on Fridays before placement activities begin on Monday.

    Upon arrival, participants will be welcomed by a member of the Gilys Children Foundation team at the airport or agreed meeting point and assisted with transportation to the volunteer accommodation.

    During the orientation, participants will receive:

    - Introduction to the program and local culture
    - Safety and community guidelines
    - Information about the placement location
    - Support with local transportation and communication
    - Opportunity to meet other volunteers and interns
