    About the program

This nonprofit is a component of a Catholic foundation that encourages communal togetherness in the area. For families of children with special needs, who come primarily from urban fringe communities in Quito's south, this center serves as a beacon of hope.

Many families in Quito and around Ecuador are unable to pay for the specialized care that paralyzed children need. Thus, the facility focuses on children with exceptional difficulties, particularly those who are experiencing cerebral paralysis. The kids receive a variety of therapies at the center.

Taking care of the disabled demands a great deal of tolerance and compassion. Your motivation to participate actively is crucial. It is very important to establish trustworthy relationships with patients, their families, and coworkers. Additionally, since the needs of the kids and the project are ever-changing, you should be adaptable.

    Typical day

The center is dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of children and adults with Down syndrome and other disabilities. Various therapy forms are offered to stimulate and develop the skills and health of the patients. Depending on your qualifications and experience, you will assist in the following activities:

    • Speech therapy
    • Physical therapy
    • Health programs
    •  Classes
    •  Free time activities
    • Sports program
    • Mealtimes

Most important is your support to the therapist in the daily tasks with the patients. In the morning, patients receive physical therapies designed to encourage the development of writing and painting skills.

Once a week, you will accompany the patients and caregivers on horse therapy, a very effective form of disability treatment. In addition, the patients regularly participate in the swimming therapy, where you can also help.

Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, weather, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.

With its rich pre-Columbian history, the capital of Ecuador was founded on the ruins of an Inca city, and nowadays offers everything a modern traveler may need. Quito remains one of the best preserved historic city centers in Latin America and UNESCO declared it a world heritage site. This huge city stretches over a fabulous Andean valley surrounded by volcanic peaks. Among its streets, you can find 40 churches and chapels, 16 convents and monasteries with their respective cloisters, 17 squares, 12 convent and refractory courtyards, 12 museums and innumerable beautiful patios.

Just 33 kilometers north of Quito is the Middle of the World, the place with the line that divides the planet earth in the northern and southern hemisphere.

Further north, an hour's drive from Quito, is Otavalo, the largest indigenous market in the world. To the south, about a hundred kilometers away, you can visit Latacunga and the Cotopaxi National Park, with the very high volcano of the same name. Further south the cities of Ambato and Baños are worth a visit, with the spectacular view of the Tungurahua volcano, which can be climbed to the top.
Especially Baños is real fun place to visit due to countless of sports and adrenaline activities.
