The Horse Care and Stable Management Project is a social initiative designed to provide a structured environment where individuals can engage with horses and learn about stable management. The program offers therapeutic benefits through animal-assisted activities while simultaneously teaching essential skills in horse care, stable upkeep, and responsible equine facility management. It integrates these activities into a broader framework of community development, fostering responsibility, work ethics, and empathy.

Volunteers help with daily chores around the stables and care for the horses, which directly benefits the well-being of the animals and frees up time for our team to focus on training. The program is overseen by our permanently employed stable managers and the Swanepoel family.

Program Objectives and Impact

1. Animal Care Education: Volunteers learn fundamentals of horse care, including feeding, grooming, and health monitoring.

2. Stable Management Skills: Practical experience in mucking out, organizing tack, and maintaining stables and surrounding areas.

3. Personal Development: Enhances emotional intelligence, resilience, teamwork, and responsibility.

4. Community Engagement: Fosters a sense of community through collaborative work and shared goals.

5. Physical and Mental Well-being: Offers therapeutic benefits, helping with stress relief, emotional support, and physical fitness.

Program Structure
The project operates daily, with structured schedules including horse care, stable chores, and training. Volunteers will work in the farm’s eight stables and surrounding paddocks, engaging with both young and experienced horses. Horses are trained on the ground as well as under saddle, including riding on the bit and adapting to different riders’ styles. Horses may be prepared for farm use, safaris, or the Namibian jumping and dressage industry.

Locations
The program is offered at two farm locations:

1. Hochfeld Farm – Traditional farm environment, ideal for immersive horse and cattle work.

2. Losberg Farm, near the airport – Conveniently located one hour from Windhoek, allowing easy access for volunteers.

Volunteers have the option to stay at one farm or visit both during their program, gaining experience in different settings while expanding skills and exposure to Namibian farm life. Accommodation is in double rooms with ensuite bathrooms, providing comfort while remaining close to the stables and daily activities.

What to Bring
No special equipment is required. Volunteers should bring:

• Safe shoes suitable for working around horses and outdoors (sneakers, hiking shoes, or safety boots)

• Sunscreen and a hat for sun protection
