The project is hosted and led by Guillermo, a member of the Tikuna Indigenous community, who welcomes volunteers not as guests, but as part of the family. From the very first day, volunteers are integrated into daily life, sharing meals, stories, and responsibilities in a truly immersive cultural experience. Guillermo created a community-driven program that directly benefits children from the Indigenous communities of Macedonia.
Although most children are officially enrolled in public school, many attend irregularly due to distance and logistical challenges. To bridge this gap, daily educational activities take place at the “Casa de Todos” (House for Everyone), located next to the local sports field. Here, children receive academic support, but learning goes far beyond traditional subjects. Great importance is placed on teaching and preserving the Indigenous language, a key element in maintaining cultural identity and heritage.
As a volunteer, your main contribution will be teaching English to the children in an interactive and playful way. You can also support sports activities, creative workshops, and traditional handicrafts, helping children develop both practical skills and self-confidence.
You will leave in Guillermos Guest House, where you will be treated as part of the family. The House is located in the amazonian community "Macedonia", with around 300 inhabitants. It's a small town, only accessible by boat. There is a little store where you can get the most important groceries, clothes, etc.
You will sleep in a comfortable bed with mosquito nets installed. In general, it's recommended to bring good clothes, rain protection, sun screen and good mosquito repellent (also accessible in the store).
Beyond working with the children, volunteers actively participate in daily life at Casa Mekürana. This includes helping with meal preparation, setting up activities, sourcing natural materials for handicraft workshops, and even creating natural paints from fruits for art sessions with the children. Every task is part of a shared effort, strengthening community bonds and giving volunteers a meaningful sense of contribution.
This program offers a unique opportunity to support education, preserve Indigenous culture, and live a deeply authentic experience in the Amazon, while making a real and lasting impact on the lives of local children.
Our expectations to the volunteers is to be open minded and flexible. The amazon is a place where the world stands still, and timing and scheduling does not always work perfectly. It's important to stay cool and relax and slow the pace of the daily life a bit down. Also, the weather can change very fastly. You can expect from us to be always in charge of organizing nice activities, to help you with translations and to stay at your side guiding you if you need help with the children or the volunteer activities.
