    Children need a lot of attention and care in order to develop optimally. The teachers are always happy to receive additional support, which is why extra helping hands are very welcome in the kindergarten. Whether you help with reading aloud, arts and crafts, outdoor play or other activities, your presence will be welcomed with great enthusiasm by the little ones. The kindergarten is a lively place full of energy and laughter, and your support will help the children to have an even better time. Whether as a playmate, dance partner or mediator, many tasks await you here.

    The institution is located in Heraklion, the capital of Crete, and has been ensuring that the youngest members of society are well off for about 30 years. A special focus is on early childhood development, but of course there is also a lot of fun, games and laughter on the agenda.

    In the first days there will be a training session to help you settle in. You will get to know the program, all procedures and of course your new colleagues. You will work six hours a day from Monday to Friday. 

    Afterwards you will take care of the children and assist the educators. It should be age-appropriate activities, from learning through play to being creative or even sporting activities. What exactly you do, you discuss with the team leaders on site. This can vary on a daily basis and depends on your skills and previous knowledge. Of course, the kindergarten must also be kept clean and you divide up the tasks. 

    It is important that the development of the children is promoted in the best possible way and that you bring a lot of dedication and patience.

Whether you’re drawn to the island for its deep-rooted traditions, stunning coastline, or delicious cuisine, Crete offers the perfect backdrop for meaningful volunteer work.

    The island is divided into four regions—Heraklion, Chania, Rethymnon, and Lassithi—each offering its own charm. Heraklion is the capital and the biggest city on the island. Here you can explore the old harbor with its Venetian fortress, wander through lively markets, or dive into history at the famous Palace of Knossos. For volunteers under 25, entry to many cultural sites is even free—feel free to check in with your local coordinator!

    Crete’s countryside is just as impressive as its cities. As you travel through olive groves, vineyards, and herb-scented hills, you’ll see why agriculture is such an important part of local life. The island is one of Europe’s top olive oil producers, and you’ll often pass ancient olive trees that have stood for thousands of years.

    In your free time, there are countless ways to discover Crete’s natural beauty. Hike through the famous Samaria Gorge, explore the White Mountains, or take in the unusual rock formations around the Pachnes summit. If the beach is more your style, don’t miss Elafonisi with its pink sand and turquoise water, or Preveli Beach, known for its palm forest and heart-shaped rock formation.

    Whether your volunteer project focuses on community development, environmental conservation, or education, your time on Crete will offer more than just a chance to give back—it’s an opportunity to become part of a rich and welcoming culture, surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery the Mediterranean has to offer. And after a day of meaningful work, what better way to unwind than with a plate of local specialties like fresh tzatziki, dakos, or a warm piece of bougatsa?

    In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

    Airport Pickup at Heraklion Airport

    You will land in Heraklion and will be picked up from the airport by a team member. On the way to your accommodation you will make a short tour through the city by car. During this tour you will be explained the schedule of the next days and you will already be shown some important places, buildings, shopping facilities and restaurants. Afterwards you will be taken to your accommodation and have the rest of the day free.

    Accommodation

    During your assignment you will live in one of the volunteer apartments on site. Depending on how many volunteers are participating in the project and how long you will stay on site, it will be decided in which apartment you will stay.

    Each apartment can accommodate up to four volunteers together. All apartments are fully furnished, have a modern bathroom and are equipped with all kitchen utensils, air conditioning and Wi-Fi. Towels and bed linen are provided. However, volunteers must take care of the cleanliness of the premises. The accommodations will also be divided by gender, unless there is a request for couples.

    Depending on the accommodation, the best way to get to your project location is either by bus or even on foot. Depending on how far it is from your apartment, you will need about up to 60 minutes. If you need to use the bus to get to your project site, you can get a bus ticket from the team on site (approx. 60€).

    Supermarkets, restaurants, bars and other stores are all nearby. The beach is also not far away and invites you to swim.Occasionally there are social events or joint excursions in which you can participate.

    The nearest town, Hersonissos is about 3 km away and can be easily reached by bus and also Heraklion is only 12 km away and can be easily visited by bus.

    Details on arrival

    You will land in Heraklion and will be picked up from the airport by a team member. On the way to your accommodation you will make a short tour through the city by car. Afterwards you will be taken to your accommodation and have the rest of the day free. You will have time to rest, explore your surroundings or get to know the other volunteers.

    The day after your arrival, your orientation program will start and you will learn a lot about Greek culture, customs and the house rules. If necessary, you will go together to the city to get a monthly ticket for public transportation or you will go directly to your workplace. There you will be shown your workplace and the further procedures will be explained to you. If you have any questions, you can always contact the team on site. After the orientation program, you have the rest of the day free.
