    About the program

Dive into adventure with Deep Blue Conservation, where marine conservation meets the ultimate diving experience. Based in Sodwana Bay, a small, untouched coastal town inside the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), this is conservation work, real diving, and a proper gap-year experience rolled into one.

    Week One: Getting Certified

Your first week is all about getting you in the water. If you're new to diving, you'll complete your PADI Open Water course, and in just three action-packed days, you'll be a certified diver. Already qualified? You'll go straight into project dives, exploring some of the most pristine reefs in the world.

    The Real Work Begins

Once certified, you'll join our team of volunteers and local staff collecting photographic data on nudibranchs, small, colourful sea slugs that act as powerful indicators of reef health. You probably don't know what a nudibranch is yet. You will. They have a way of becoming an underwater obsession fast, and every photo you log feeds directly into a growing database used to track reef health and the effects of climate change, in collaboration with BlueDOT.

Want to go deeper? Our marine lectures, run by a local zoologist, are a relaxed, no-pressure way to learn more about the ocean you're diving in every day.

A Real Rhythm, Not Just a Holiday

We believe in balancing adventure with rest, so two days a week are kept off the dive schedule. One is for weekly excursions: think Lake Sibaya's untouched waters, the sub-tropical forest at Tolla se Gat, sundowners at Ngobos, or exploring empty northern beaches and rock pools most tourists never find. The other is yours to slow down, recharge, and soak in everything you've experienced before diving back in.

    Life in Sodwana

Outside of diving and excursions, you'll be living life in a small town where sand roads replace traffic, the bush comes right up to your accommodation, and everyone, staff, locals, and fellow volunteers, ends up feeling like family. It's safe, easy to walk around, and small enough that you'll know half the town by your second week. Most of our volunteers arrive solo, a little nervous about doing this alone, and leave with a crew of friends they didn't expect to find.

Everything is taken care of from the moment you land: airport transfers, accommodation, meals, gear, your PADI course, project dives, excursions, and 24/7 on-site support. All you need to bring is a sense of adventure.

This is more than a diving trip. It's hands-on conservation work, real friendships, and 2 weeks (or more) spent living somewhere most people never even hear about. Ready to dive in?

    Typical day

Every morning, five days a week, we head down to the beach for another day of diving. We pile onto the back of a bakkie (a pick-up truck, for the non-South Africans) and drive through coastal forest to reach the beach. Once we're kitted up, we launch through the waves on a Zodiac boat out to our reefs, with 2 Mile Reef being our biggest and most-dived site.

Underwater, you're free to photograph everything, not just the nudibranchs we're collecting data on, but every turtle, ray, and reef fish that crosses your path. We know you want photos to take home, so snap away.

We run on African time, so there's never a rush after a dive. Hang out on the beach, swim, or grab something tasty from the beach kiosk before heading back to camp.

Back at camp, you'll have an hour or two to shower, relax, and grab lunch before it's time for the database. We gather around with our ID books and work through the nudibranchs we spotted that day, logging each one into our growing database. After that, you're welcome to join one of our marine lectures if you're keen to learn more, but they're never compulsory.

Once the database and lectures are done, the rest of the day is yours. Chill at camp, head next door for a game of pool, wander into the town, or grab a spot to watch the sunset. There's always something to do, or nothing at all, if that's what you're after.

On our first day off each week, we head out on an excursion: one of our untouched northern beaches, Lake Sibaya, or Tolla se Gat. As South Africans, we never need much of an excuse to braai (barbecue), so wherever we go, the fire gets lit, the food comes out, and the rest of the day is spent swimming and soaking up the sun with the group.

Our second day off is built for resting and recharging, though plenty of volunteers use it to add on an extra adventure, whether that's a safari, a trip into town, or simply another day at the beach.

    Free-time activities

Diving's only half the story. Sodwana moves slow, in the best way, but when you're after something to do, there's plenty on offer. Here's a taste of how volunteers spend their downtime:

Diving's only half the story. Sodwana moves slow, in the best way, but when you're after something to do, there's plenty on offer. Here's a taste of how volunteers spend their downtime:

    • Doing absolutely nothing on the beach (highly recommended)
    • Freediving when scuba just isn't enough
    • Browsing the local markets for souvenirs you didn't know you needed
    • Bars, restaurants, and the occasional dance floor
    • Safari trips to spot Africa's other famous wildlife
    • Boat trips through Kosi Bay's lake system to spot hippos
    • Whale watching during whale season (June to November)
    • Sundowners at our favourite local viewpoints
    • Watching the moon rise over the ocean
    • Turtle tours during nesting and hatching season, baby turtles included
    • Surfing, or learning to surf for the first time
    • Hikes through coastal forest and dune trails
    • Braais (that's a barbecue, for the non-South Africans) at camp or out on excursions
    • Quad biking through the bush
    • And honestly, way more than we can list here.

Airport Pickup at Richards Bay Airport

Get ready to kick off your adventure with a warm welcome! Every Friday, our staff will be waiting to greet you at Richards Bay Airport. Transfers run before 3pm, so we suggest booking a morning or afternoon flight into Richards Bay. From there, it's a scenic two-hour drive through to Sodwana Bay, your first taste of the coastal forest and bush that'll be your backdrop for the next few weeks.

    Accommodation

Welcome home. Our volunteer and intern house sits right on Sodwana Bay's main road, so you're never far from anything, whether that's a coffee at a local cafe, a browse through the shops, dinner at a nearby restaurant, or just being five minutes from your bed after a long day underwater.

Inside, you'll find a fully equipped communal kitchen where most of the magic happens: think shared meals, terrible jokes, and stories from the day's dive swapped over dinner. There's a communal bathroom for everyday comfort, and an outdoor patio that's perfect for winding down at the end of the day.

Rooms are shared, with single beds, a fan, and mosquito nets to keep things comfortable. Want your own space instead? Just let us know and we'll sort it out.

Right next door, you'll find our go-to bar and restaurant, home to (in our very biased opinion) the best burgers in town, a pool table, a TV for sports nights, and free WiFi to keep in touch with everyone back home.

It's not fancy. It's not a hotel. It's the kind of place where you'll make some of your best friends over a shared kitchen counter, and where "home" starts to mean something different by the time you leave.

    Food & Beverages

Every week, you and your fellow volunteers put together a shopping list, and our staff handle the grocery run within the weekly food budget. It's not five-star catering, it's good, honest staples to fuel a week of diving, conservation work, and exploring.

Back at the volunteer house, the communal kitchen becomes the heart of daily life. Breakfasts get thrown together before the morning dive, dinners turn into a group effort, and somewhere in between, you'll probably end up swapping recipes (and more than a few stories) with volunteers from all over the world. Vegetarian? Got a dietary requirement? Just let us know in advance and we'll work it into the weekly shop.
